The weather's been turning a little colder

0:00:020:00:04

and more wintry through the second half of this week,

0:00:040:00:07

and that wintry theme sticks with us through the course of the weekend.

0:00:070:00:10

On Saturday, a couple of things to watch out for.

0:00:100:00:12

First off, low pressure just pushing along the English Channel,

0:00:120:00:14

bringing some outbreaks of rain, a little sleet and hill snow,

0:00:140:00:17

and brisk winds to many southern areas.

0:00:170:00:19

Windy for the Channel Isles, for instance.

0:00:190:00:21

To the north of that, a cold easterly wind.

0:00:210:00:23

That will draw in further snow showers

0:00:230:00:25

for the north-east of England and south-east Scotland,

0:00:250:00:28

where it could be disruptive,

0:00:280:00:29

with several centimetres likely to accumulate through the day.

0:00:290:00:32

A cold picture as we move through

0:00:320:00:33

the course of Saturday night, into Sunday.

0:00:330:00:35

The far south staying fairly cloudy, with outbreaks of drizzly rain,

0:00:350:00:39

but for much of the UK, it's going to be pretty chilly.

0:00:390:00:41

Temperatures in the countryside a few degrees lower than this.

0:00:410:00:44

A sharp frost to start off Sunday morning.

0:00:440:00:47

During the day on Sunday, we're between weather fronts.

0:00:470:00:49

We've got a weather front sitting out to the south-west

0:00:490:00:52

and the south-east.

0:00:520:00:53

In between, we're left with an east to north-easterly airflow

0:00:530:00:56

coming in off the North Sea, so again, it will feel pretty bitter.

0:00:560:00:59

The south-east will hold on

0:00:590:01:00

to some outbreaks of rain through the day.

0:01:000:01:02

Further snow showers for north-east England

0:01:020:01:04

and also for south-east Scotland once again.

0:01:040:01:06

But away from these areas, quite a good deal of brightness.

0:01:060:01:09

But that cold, biting easterly wind

0:01:090:01:11

and temperatures only around about 4 to 8 degrees.

0:01:110:01:14

Cold air well and truly in place as we end the weekend.

0:01:140:01:17

You can see the northerly winds.

0:01:170:01:18

They stay with us into the new working week as well.

0:01:180:01:21

It looks like a really cold start to Monday.

0:01:210:01:23

We can see a sharp frost.

0:01:230:01:25

Monday not shaping up too badly for many areas.

0:01:250:01:27

Some sunshine, especially in the west.

0:01:270:01:29

But that northerly wind drawing in some sleet and snow showers

0:01:290:01:32

to many eastern areas

0:01:320:01:33

and temperatures nothing to write home about.

0:01:330:01:35

A subtle change for Monday night into Tuesday.

0:01:350:01:37

A ridge of higher pressure creeps in from the Atlantic.

0:01:370:01:40

That means those brisk winds in the east

0:01:400:01:42

gradually dying away through the course of the day.

0:01:420:01:45

Tuesday, after a very cold start

0:01:450:01:47

with some freezing fog and some frost likely, not a bad day.

0:01:470:01:50

Some sunshine for many areas.

0:01:500:01:51

You can see that front arriving in the north-west.

0:01:510:01:54

That could bring some hill snow on its leading edge.

0:01:540:01:56

And as we see this front

0:01:560:01:58

slipping its way further southwards and eastwards

0:01:580:02:00

on into the middle of the week,

0:02:000:02:01

we could see some snow not only on the leading edge

0:02:010:02:03

of that frontal system, but also on the rear edge of it as well.

0:02:030:02:07

Some snowfall likely at times on Wednesday.

0:02:070:02:09

A period of rain for many areas,

0:02:090:02:11

particularly at low levels in between.

0:02:110:02:13

Temperatures, again, just around 5 to 7 Celsius.

0:02:130:02:16

A return to some fresher conditions

0:02:160:02:18

with sunshine and showers in the north-west later on.

0:02:180:02:21

This is how things are shaping up

0:02:210:02:22

as we look towards the latter part of the week,

0:02:220:02:25

for Thursday into Friday.

0:02:250:02:26

High pressure sitting out in the Atlantic there.

0:02:260:02:28

High pressure also across Scandinavia.

0:02:280:02:30

This frontal system looks like it peters out

0:02:300:02:32

a little bit across the country

0:02:320:02:34

and that means the cold air once again wins the battle.

0:02:340:02:37

So, things are staying cold.

0:02:370:02:38

You can see the blue colours on the map through the course of Thursday

0:02:380:02:41

and, in fact, on into Friday,

0:02:410:02:43

but a bit of a subtle change in wind direction.

0:02:430:02:45

So, we're looking at a bit more of a north-westerly influence

0:02:450:02:48

to our weather as we end of the week

0:02:480:02:49

with high pressure out in the Atlantic.

0:02:490:02:51

That north-westerly wind likely to draw in

0:02:510:02:54

areas of low pressure across the UK, pushing gradually south-eastwards

0:02:540:02:58

as we head through towards next weekend.

0:02:580:03:01

That means we'll have a little bit

0:03:010:03:02

of a northwest-southeast split to our weather,

0:03:020:03:05

with north-western areas likely to be blustery at times,

0:03:050:03:07

with wintry showers.

0:03:070:03:09

Further south and east, you are a drier theme to the weather

0:03:090:03:12

and a little bit less breezy here as well.

0:03:120:03:14

Plenty going on for the next ten days or so, but one thing's certain.

0:03:140:03:18

It is going to be staying cold, with sharp overnight frosts,

0:03:180:03:21

some rain, some hill snow at times,

0:03:210:03:23

and by the end of the period, things are becoming breezy once again.

0:03:230:03:27

Bye-bye for now.
