Hello. At this time of the year we're starting to see | 0:00:03 | 0:00:06
light at the end of the tunnel from those winter months. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
But this week we're also likely to see all faces of winter. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:11
It wasn't a bad start, really, with a frost, as you can see | 0:00:11 | 0:00:14
from these Weather Watchers pictures sent in from Somerset. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:17
Clear blue skies and sunshine, though, in parts of Gloucestershire, | 0:00:17 | 0:00:21
but there were some frequent showers running down the North Sea coast | 0:00:21 | 0:00:24
and they actually brought a wintry mix, | 0:00:24 | 0:00:27
a light dusting of snow in Sunderland. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:29
Thanks for the Weather Watchers photos that we've been sent in. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:32
Now for Tuesday, after a frosty start, some sparkling sunshine | 0:00:32 | 0:00:35
across much of England and Wales. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
A different story further north and west | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
with the wind strengthening, cloud and rain gathering here, | 0:00:40 | 0:00:43
some snow across the mountains, and we're likely to see gales | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
and some pretty persistent rain for a time. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
Highs of 5 to 8 degrees. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:49
Now, that weather front could produce a bit of a headache | 0:00:49 | 0:00:53
as it continues to slowly drift its way south and east, | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
bumping into the cold air ahead of it, | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
but also there's some cold air behind, | 0:00:58 | 0:01:01
and that mix may well mean that we could see some snow, | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
chiefly to the higher ground - across the Southern Uplands, | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
through the Pennines and into North Wales. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
But maybe for a time at lower levels as well - | 0:01:08 | 0:01:11
certainly one to keep an eye on. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:13
But underneath that cloud, rain or snow, | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
it's going to be a pretty miserable feel to the day. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
To the south-east, somewhat drier and brighter, | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
same too to the north and west. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
That weather front clears away first thing on Thursday morning, | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
brighter conditions following on behind - | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
not a bad day in prospect, largely fine and dry, | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
but again on the colder side, 5 to 7 or 8 degrees the high. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:34
As we move out of Thursday into Friday | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
we start to see a change developing - | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
not a bad start to the day after some early frost, | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
some sunshine coming through, cloud and rain gathering out to the west. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:45
But the wind starting to swing round | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
to more of a west or a south-westerly direction, | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
introducing milder air, | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
and that's going to bring some air across Scotland, Northern Ireland, | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
and west-facing coasts, eventually pushing its way south and east. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:58
But milder - temperatures sitting at about 10 degrees in the south-east. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:02
So that means a change as we move into the weekend. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
Another weather front follows on behind. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
Westerly winds take over. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
Pretty windy day, perhaps, for the start of the weekend, | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
and some outbreaks of rain to come. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
It starts off dry in eastern areas, rain pushing in from the west | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
somewhat erratically from west to east, | 0:02:17 | 0:02:20
but a milder feel to the day. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:21
Temperatures around 11 or 13 degrees across much of England and Wales. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:26
But to look further ahead, we have to look further afield, | 0:02:26 | 0:02:30
and if you haven't already heard, | 0:02:30 | 0:02:31
it's been bitterly cold across eastern parts of the US. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
Signs of milder air starting to push in, | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
and this milder air is going to reignite the jet stream, | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
re-intensify the jet stream as it pushes out of the US | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
across the Atlantic. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:45
So we'll start to see a fast-moving jet | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
channelling its way across the Atlantic, | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
driving towards the UK. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
Centring perhaps towards the north, and that means we will see | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
more unsettled weather across the far north. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
But more importantly, it's going to continue to introduce | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
milder air across the country, | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
with occasional dips in that see-saw variation that we've seen recently | 0:03:03 | 0:03:07
with colder air from time to time. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
But basically, it means that the winds will be a key feature | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
as we move towards the end of February. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
And there's going to be some rain, some of it heavy at times. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
We're back to the see-saw, dipping temperatures, | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
no two days the same. One day mild, the next day cold. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:25
So it looks pretty unsettled as we move towards the end of February. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
More from me tomorrow. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:30
A world full of your favourite Dickens characters. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:47
Why do you stay with him, Helen? | 0:03:51 | 0:03:51
If that was my daughter, | 0:03:51 | 0:03:52
You know, you're quite funny, for a girl. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:53
One decision... | 0:03:53 | 0:03:54 |
