Hello. Meteorologically, the end of February is the end of the winter, | 0:00:03 | 0:00:07
but before we get there we're likely to see | 0:00:07 | 0:00:09
all faces of winter, and for Tuesday it was a face of contrasting | 0:00:09 | 0:00:13
conditions with some windy and wet weather out to the north and west. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:17
After a frosty start, | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
we had some beautiful sunshine across much of England and Wales. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
And the Weather Watchers' pictures reflected this beautifully, a | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
lovely scene in Kent but a different story further north and west. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:29
Yes, it was a dramatic scene, but unfortunately, there was | 0:00:29 | 0:00:32
some heavy rain and some big waves in South Lanarkshire. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:36
Now, that wet and windy weather is continuing to push its way | 0:00:36 | 0:00:39
steadily south and east through Wednesday. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:41
There'll be some snow to higher ground, | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
but as we go through Wednesday evening, | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
it does look as though that rain could turn more to a wintry | 0:00:46 | 0:00:49
mix of sleet and snow even at lower levels through the Midlands | 0:00:49 | 0:00:53
and eastern England. It will clear away pretty readily. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
And then on Thursday we see a return to some colder, drier, | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
sunnier conditions with a scattering of showers out to the north | 0:00:58 | 0:01:02
and west and highs of around three to seven Celsius. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:06
Now, as we move out of Thursday into Friday, | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
we start off in sheltered eastern areas dry with some sunshine, | 0:01:08 | 0:01:11
clouding over, | 0:01:11 | 0:01:12
and the winds starting to strengthen ahead of this next area of rain. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:16
Now, the wind's starting to push in from a south-westerly | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
so starting to introduce slightly milder air, | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
double figures returning into the south-west. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
And this is the indication as we move into the weekend | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
as further wet and windy weather pushes in from the west. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
With that system clearing away, | 0:01:30 | 0:01:31
the winds swing round to more of a westerly. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
It brings some rain, | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
some of it heavy, and we'll need to keep a close | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
eye on rainfall total amounts up into the extreme north-west. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
But it's introducing this milder air. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
So a real difference with the feel of the weather on Saturday. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:46
Yes, it's going to be pretty windy and often wet at times, | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
particularly further north and west, but look | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
at the temperatures, highs of 13 degrees not out of the question. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:55
Still some pretty wet | 0:01:55 | 0:01:56
and windy weather to come into the second half of the weekend, but as | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
that frontal system starts to clear through, | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
the winds will slowly start to swing round to more of a north-westerly | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
and eventually, through the second half of the weekend, | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
introduce some slightly colder air to the north. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
So we'll start to see blues returning across the northern | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
half of the country, | 0:02:13 | 0:02:14
still the milder yellows down to the south, which basically means | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
that those temperatures will still stay at around 11 to 13 degrees. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:21
Still the potential for some heavy spells of rain, | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
as well, through the course of Sunday. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
Once we've got Sunday out of the way, we start to see a change. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
It's all due to the jet stream. Through the weekend, | 0:02:30 | 0:02:33
a jet is centred through the spine of the country, driving low | 0:02:33 | 0:02:36
pressures across us and dragging in this milder south-westerly flow. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:40
But then we've just started to see things will change. Into the early | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
half of next week, the low pressure kinks | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
and we start to see this high building out to the south-west. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
That's going to introduce colder air from a northerly | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
direction again, but it's not expected to last. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:55
Towards the end of the six-to-ten-day period, | 0:02:55 | 0:02:57
the jet stream centres itself almost in a parallel | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
position across the UK, driving those low pressures in. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
And what does this basically all mean for us? | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
Well, it means that we haven't lost the return to that cold weather, | 0:03:06 | 0:03:10
potentially hard night-time frosts into the early part of next | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
week but some beautiful spells of sunshine. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:16
But it will quickly disappear. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:18
In the longer ten-day period, we could see a return to some | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
milder but wetter and windier weather to come. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
I'll firm up on those details same time, same place tomorrow. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
Until then, keep sending in your Weather Watchers' photos. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:30 |
