Hello. Earlier in the week I said | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
we were just a couple of weeks from the end of meteorological winter, | 0:00:04 | 0:00:07
but we were likely to see all faces of winter | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
before the month of February was through. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
Actually, we saw them on Wednesday. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
Just look at this in the far north-west of Scotland - | 0:00:14 | 0:00:17
a dusting of snow in Lanarkshire to greet us on Wednesday morning. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:20
In the far south-east corner, through Essex, | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
we had a frosty start but blue sky and sunshine. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
Sandwiched in between the two, it was pretty dismal, | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
with a lot of cloud and rain around across the Midlands. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:32
Thanks for these Weather Watchers' photographs. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
Now, that weather front still yet to clear away during Thursday. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:37
It will slowly do so across the Essex and Kent coast, | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
here, just lingering, but elsewhere a lot of sunshine coming through | 0:00:40 | 0:00:44
and just a scattering of wintry showers even at lower levels | 0:00:44 | 0:00:48
with highs of 5 to 8 Celsius. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
But as we move out of Thursday, | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
it looks as though we'll keep some clearer skies and lighter winds | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
through central and eastern areas - here, the possibility of a frost. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
The isobars squeeze together, the winds start to strengthen, | 0:00:58 | 0:01:01
and we'll start to see the arrival | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
of a weather front pushing in from the west, | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
so milder, with temperatures staying above freezing. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:08
So we start off the day on Friday with a west-east divide. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:11
We cling on to the best of the sunshine in sheltered eastern areas. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
The winds will strengthen, the rain arrives, | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
there'll be some snow on the leading edge, | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
but then it's likely to turn back to rain | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
as milder air continues to push in from the west. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:23
It does look as though it'll be wilder, wetter and windier for many | 0:01:23 | 0:01:27
on Saturday, and that marks the start of a change in the story. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:32
As we move through Saturday afternoon | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
temperatures could peak at 14 degrees. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
Still staying pretty cold up into the far north. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
It's this milder air flooding in | 0:01:39 | 0:01:40
across the majority of England and Wales which will see temperatures | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
sitting above the average for the time of year. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
But to the far north, we keep that cold air - | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
5 degrees possible in Scotland. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
That's the boundary for a frontal system, | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
and that could mark some significant issues | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
as we move into Sunday. There's the potential for some heavy rain, | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
some flooding rain, perhaps, into north-west Wales, | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
north-west England, maybe even some significant snow | 0:02:01 | 0:02:05
across parts of Scotland. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
Now, that all depends on where this weather front tends to lie, | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
and it is definitely subject to change. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
But it's worth keeping a close eye on the forecast for Sunday. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:17
Further south on Sunday, it's a windy one, | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
but again, it's still pretty mild, | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
with some showery outbreaks of rain from time to time. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
Highs of 6 to 13 degrees. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
And that marks a change. As the wind directions | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
move from a south-westerly into a north-westerly, | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
we flip back into a colder feel across the country, | 0:02:31 | 0:02:35
significantly noticeable down into the Midlands, | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
maybe double figures into the south. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
So for our longer, six- to ten-day period, | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
what's happening? Well, the jet stream buckles up into the north, | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
it allows high pressure to build into the south-west, | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
but drags in this colder air for a time. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
So early into next week, it could be cold again. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
We flip-flop back, the jet stream reverts back to a westerly, | 0:02:54 | 0:02:58
stretching across the country, driving low pressures in, | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
and things become a little more unsettled. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
So I suspect there could be something for everybody | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
into next week. The early half of next week, | 0:03:06 | 0:03:08
if you like your mornings cold and frosty with some wintry showers | 0:03:08 | 0:03:12
but some chilly winds, you'll be happy. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
However, if you like it just that little bit milder, | 0:03:14 | 0:03:16
and not sure, but if you do like wet and windy, | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19
you'll be happy with this one. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
But there will be some drier interludes as well. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:23
A lot to play for before that, | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
but that's the story as we go into next week. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:27
Don't forget, keep watching the forecast for weekend developments. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:30 |
