Hello. You don't need me to tell you that over the winter months

0:00:020:00:05

the weather gave us a torrid ride with storm after storm,

0:00:050:00:08

some significant flooding in places, and that sort of weather

0:00:080:00:10

has continued into the first part of meteorological spring -

0:00:100:00:13

these pictures just from last week from Weather Watchers

0:00:130:00:16

across parts of central and eastern England,

0:00:160:00:18

more flooding downpours.

0:00:180:00:20

But the pictures coming in over the weekend have been much quieter,

0:00:200:00:23

much more spring-like - there's the scene from West Yorkshire.

0:00:230:00:26

So clearly something has changed in our weather,

0:00:260:00:28

and the clues, as ever, can be found in the jet stream,

0:00:280:00:31

that through much of the winter

0:00:310:00:33

has been running right across the Atlantic,

0:00:330:00:35

carrying storm after storm.

0:00:350:00:37

It has been almost relentlessly wet and windy.

0:00:370:00:40

But now, look at this. An area of high pressure has arrived.

0:00:400:00:43

A blocking area of high pressure

0:00:430:00:45

that's diverting rain-bearing weather systems to the north of us

0:00:450:00:48

or around us and into the Mediterranean.

0:00:480:00:51

So our weather this week predominantly settled.

0:00:510:00:53

There'll be question marks about cloud amounts,

0:00:530:00:55

temperatures under the cloud, frost and fog,

0:00:550:00:57

but no significant weather systems coming our way,

0:00:570:01:00

no significant rainfall on the horizon,

0:01:000:01:03

and many people may say "long may it last".

0:01:030:01:05

Let's look at things day by day

0:01:050:01:07

because no two days are going to be the same.

0:01:070:01:09

For Monday, England and Wales, early cloud clearing,

0:01:090:01:12

Scotland and Northern Ireland a sunnier day.

0:01:120:01:14

We all have long sunny spells into the afternoon.

0:01:140:01:17

Still the chilly wind for parts of the east and south

0:01:170:01:19

with single-figure temperatures, but warmest away from that breeze

0:01:190:01:22

in western Scotland - 13, 14 Celsius.

0:01:220:01:25

It will feel pleasantly warm.

0:01:250:01:27

Now if we look at the picture going into Tuesday,

0:01:270:01:29

I'm hiding here in the Atlantic a deep area of low pressure,

0:01:290:01:32

but we don't need to worry about that.

0:01:320:01:34

Remember I said this was a blocking high pressure -

0:01:340:01:36

it's blocking these weather systems coming our way on the jet stream,

0:01:360:01:39

they ride up over that area of high pressure so we stay settled.

0:01:390:01:44

But again, no two days are the same, so Tuesday is cloudier,

0:01:440:01:47

especially for England and Wales, and along this coastline here,

0:01:470:01:49

north-east England, through Yorkshire, maybe East Anglia,

0:01:490:01:52

risk of some sea fog moving in,

0:01:520:01:53

and there may also be a little bit of drizzle in places as well,

0:01:530:01:56

so not necessarily bone dry this week.

0:01:560:01:59

The picture for Wednesday, a weather front close to the south.

0:01:590:02:01

The only thing that's going to do is actually bring drier air

0:02:010:02:04

to parts of southern England and South Wales

0:02:040:02:07

which means sunnier conditions returning on Wednesday -

0:02:070:02:09

still rather cloudy, eastern Scotland and north-east England

0:02:090:02:12

still perhaps the chance of

0:02:120:02:14

getting a little bit of drizzle in places.

0:02:140:02:16

High pressure, then, still very much in control on Thursday,

0:02:160:02:19

weather systems into the Mediterranean,

0:02:190:02:22

an area of low pressure here so it will be wet,

0:02:220:02:24

potentially stormy in places.

0:02:240:02:25

But for us it's just a mixture of cloud, some sunny spells -

0:02:250:02:30

if anything, that breeze down towards the south of the UK

0:02:300:02:32

begins to ease a little bit and then right at the end of the week,

0:02:320:02:35

still high pressure right across us.

0:02:350:02:38

There may still be a touch of frost overnight

0:02:380:02:41

if you're clear for any period of time.

0:02:410:02:42

Again, there could be some fog patches in places to start the day.

0:02:420:02:45

It is likely throughout the week west is best, though,

0:02:450:02:48

for the sunny spells.

0:02:480:02:50

Temperatures around 8 to 10 Celsius, as you can see, for Friday.

0:02:500:02:53

And then going into next weekend,

0:02:530:02:55

and it's the weekend of the spring equinox,

0:02:550:02:58

which means after that the days get longer than the nights.

0:02:580:03:00

We've got high pressure still around.

0:03:000:03:02

There's a slim chance that it may start to break down

0:03:020:03:06

with weather systems trying to come in from the west or east,

0:03:060:03:08

but the preferred solution at the moment

0:03:080:03:10

is for that high pressure for the weekend,

0:03:100:03:12

even into the following week to still be close by,

0:03:120:03:14

and that means again most places will be dry.

0:03:140:03:16

Some days sunnier, cloudier than others,

0:03:160:03:19

still a risk of frost and perhaps some fog overnight.

0:03:190:03:21

When that area of high pressure

0:03:210:03:23

breaks down and clears and becomes more unsettled

0:03:230:03:26

is the big question, and we'll follow that

0:03:260:03:28

in these broadcasts this week.
