Thanks for joining me. | 0:00:03 | 0:00:04
It's time to get a check on the weather for the next week or so | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
and the forecast hasn't actually changed, | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
if you were watching yesterday. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:09
It will remain very unsettled for the rest of this week, | 0:00:09 | 0:00:12
further blustery showers on the way for tomorrow after what has been | 0:00:12 | 0:00:15
a brief spell of better weather | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
during the course of Tuesday. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
The changes are already starting to take shape | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
across the North Atlantic. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:23
These are showers here which are gathering. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
They are also coming in on a cold, north-westerly wind. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:28
That's going to be in place across the UK | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
during the course of Wednesday, | 0:00:30 | 0:00:31
so a really chilly day on the way for some of us, | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
particularly in those blustery showers. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
This is what it looks like through the course of tonight, | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
so the weather front, | 0:00:38 | 0:00:39
which actually is the leading edge | 0:00:39 | 0:00:41
of this colder air coming in off the North Atlantic, | 0:00:41 | 0:00:44
you can see where it starts to rain | 0:00:44 | 0:00:45
across Northern Ireland, Scotland, | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
even a bit of winteriness here. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
Does look as though it will stay dry all through the night | 0:00:49 | 0:00:52
across East Anglia and the south-east. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:53
Here's the morning - those winds keep on strengthening. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
In fact, they'll get stronger and stronger | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
through the course of the day, | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
up to gale-force and a real what we call rash of showers, | 0:01:00 | 0:01:03
so lots of them, | 0:01:03 | 0:01:04
hit and miss, on and off from hour to hour | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
with sunshine in between. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
This is round about lunchtime - | 0:01:08 | 0:01:09
you can see a good chance | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
of catching these showers across most of Scotland, | 0:01:11 | 0:01:13
plenty of them through the Lowlands, | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
down into the south-west of Scotland, | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
Northern Ireland catching quite a few here, | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
into the north-west of England as well | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
and one or two across parts of East Anglia and the south-east, | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
at least at this stage. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:25
Notice fewer showers for Wales, | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
the bulk of the Midlands | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
and south-western parts of England, | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
but I wouldn't be surprised | 0:01:32 | 0:01:33
if one or two of us get caught out | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
in a heavier one even here. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:36
Temperatures will hover around 7 to 9 degrees but, of course, | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
because it's a lot stronger, | 0:01:39 | 0:01:40
you don't need to be a meteorologist to figure out | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
that it's certainly going to feel quite a bit colder, | 0:01:42 | 0:01:45
so perhaps the apparent temperature, | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
the "feels like" temperature | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
may be around 2 or 3 degrees above freezing. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
Thursday, copycat conditions for some of us. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
Still cold, north-westerly winds. If anything, | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
it may actually be worse across the south of the country. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
There might be more cloud | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
and more frequent spells of rain | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
and again, it's going to feel pretty chilly | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
in those strong winds. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:05
Come Friday, there's another weather front coming our way, | 0:02:05 | 0:02:08
further rain expected across western areas, | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
initially reaching Northern Ireland, | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
parts of Wales, | 0:02:13 | 0:02:14
down into the south-west early in the day, we think. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
Perhaps later in the afternoon, | 0:02:17 | 0:02:18
that rain will sweep across other parts of the country, | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
so you're starting to get that message | 0:02:21 | 0:02:22
that it is going to be raining pretty much every day, | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
but not everywhere for the rest of this week. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
And the weekend - low pressure parks itself across | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
this portion of the country. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:32
Quite often, lows sweep in from west to east. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
This one is just going to meander | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
across this part of the Atlantic | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
and the UK and just keep sending | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
weather fronts in our direction. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:42
One of the reasons why it's stuck across this part | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
of the world is the shape of the jet stream | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
and if you know your Greek alphabet, | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
you might know the letter omega | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
and this is exactly what we are seeing here, | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
and omega shape to the jet stream. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:54
It actually looks a bit more like an octopus, to be honest, | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
but the physics are such that when we get this sort of pattern, | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
the atmosphere grinds to a halt | 0:03:00 | 0:03:01
and we don't get these weather systems moving | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
so much from west to east. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:06
They kind of stay where they are, | 0:03:06 | 0:03:07
so this area of low pressure is going | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
to hang around across this part of the Atlantic | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
and the UK through the weekend into next week, | 0:03:11 | 0:03:13
which basically means the weather | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
isn't going to change an awful lot. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
Rain showers to sunshine, back to rain showers again. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
And at night, when the sky is clear | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
it is going to be pretty chilly, | 0:03:22 | 0:03:23
so the unsettled theme looks as though | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
it is set to continue into next week | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
and that's your omega block lesson. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:30 |
