Come the weekend, most of us will be dry but cool. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
At the moment, though, the story is one of wet or warm | 0:00:05 | 0:00:07
depending on where you are across the UK. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
Let's start off with the warm first of all. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
It was a stunning day on Monday across the Highlands of Scotland, | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
this beautiful picture taken by one of our weather watchers - | 0:00:14 | 0:00:17
27 degrees. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:18
At the other end of the UK, though, it was a very different story. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:21
A very wet afternoon across parts of Devon | 0:00:21 | 0:00:23
and further wet weather to come on Tuesday across | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
the southern half of the UK, some heavy and thundery bursts | 0:00:25 | 0:00:29
churning their way slowly northwards and westwards. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:32
In contrast, across the northern half of the UK it will be dry | 0:00:32 | 0:00:35
with plenty more of that very warm sunshine | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
particularly once more across Scotland. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
The Western Highlands and Islands probably warmest of all - | 0:00:40 | 0:00:43
mid-20s here - but as we've seen over the last couple of days, | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
with an easterly breeze those North Sea coasts will be | 0:00:46 | 0:00:49
a good deal cooler - just 12 or 13 degrees. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
But a lot of sunshine across Scotland. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:54
Northern Ireland fine and warm, most of northern England too, | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
but that rain will be edging up | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
into parts of South Yorkshire, Cheshire, maybe Lancashire. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
This is four o'clock. Plenty of wet weather for the Midlands. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
It might brighten up across parts of south-east England | 0:01:05 | 0:01:07
but don't be fooled - | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
further heavy showers are quite possible. Quite humid, thundery air. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
Wet weather for Wales and south-west England so if you are on the road | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
through Tuesday, take it steady - there will be a fair bit of | 0:01:15 | 0:01:18
surface water and spray around. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
Check out your BBC local radio station. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
Now, as we go through the evening and night, | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
the rain will continue to churn its way further northwards into | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
northern England, Northern Ireland too, | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
where it will kind of grind to a halt. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:30
The exact position of that a little bit uncertain. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:33
Drier on either side and heavy showers across southern areas | 0:01:33 | 0:01:36
again with high humidities. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
Best of the sunshine once more across Scotland. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
Where you see prolonged sunshine, | 0:01:41 | 0:01:42
again temperatures doing pretty well. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
Where it's raining for much of the day, | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
it will be a good deal cooler. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:47
As I mentioned, that front kind of grinding to a halt and then | 0:01:47 | 0:01:50
it is going to begin to head southwards again later on this week. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:54
The reason for that is northerly winds setting in. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:57
Northerly winds are never all that warm and as you can see by the blue | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
coming down the North Sea it will turn a good deal cooler. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
Bit of a shock to the system for some of us | 0:02:03 | 0:02:05
after all the warm whether and certainly, | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
temperatures will be down by several degrees | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
initially across the more northern and eastern parts of the UK, | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
where there will be a fresh breeze, | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
fair bit of cloud and maybe the odd shower. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
Warmth holding on across the far south-west for a time but the trend | 0:02:16 | 0:02:20
will be, as we hit the weekend, for temperatures to be sliding away. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
Still quite breezy near the North Sea coast, | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
maybe the odd shower, but as you can see, a lot of dry weather. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
If you can get out of the breeze and in the sunshine, although | 0:02:29 | 0:02:33
temperatures will be lower than recently, it shouldn't feel too bad. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
So, if you are heading out camping, for example, | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
you will be fine by day | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
but overnight, with clear skies, expect some chilly ones. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
Not far off freezing, I reckon, through this weekend overnight. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:47
Still got that northerly breeze and I'm going to move to one side. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
Low pressure trying to come in off the Atlantic but not | 0:02:50 | 0:02:54
really getting very far through this weekend, hence the dry prospect. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
But what we are expecting as we go into the early part of next week | 0:02:57 | 0:03:01
is for the jet stream to start to liven up again | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
and push that low pressure towards us. How quickly it does that | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
through next week is still open to some doubt but eventually, | 0:03:07 | 0:03:11
I think, low pressure will arrive on our doorstep | 0:03:11 | 0:03:13
and bring some more unsettled and at times wetter weather. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:16
So, to sum up next week, certainly a fine start. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19
Rain on the horizon but how quickly it arrives, | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
again, a little bit of a question - | 0:03:21 | 0:03:23
it depends how quickly that jet stream kind of wakes up. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
But I will update you again with the timings on that tomorrow. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:29 |
