Hello there. Whether it's the astronomical calendar | 0:00:03 | 0:00:05
or the meteorological calendar that you follow, it's safe to say | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
we're now in summer. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:10
The summer solstice, though, started on a fairly ominous note, | 0:00:10 | 0:00:13
grim scenes for commuters across England and Wales in the morning, | 0:00:13 | 0:00:16
much like this captured by one of our weather watchers in Reading, | 0:00:16 | 0:00:19
and if you're packing at the moment for Glastonbury, | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
this is the last thing you want to see - very boggy ground | 0:00:21 | 0:00:24
on Monday morning thanks to the heavy overnight rain, | 0:00:24 | 0:00:27
but before you lose heart don't forget we had a bit more of this | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
through the second half of Monday and we'll probably see a bit more | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
of this than the wet stuff in Glastonbury as we head towards | 0:00:33 | 0:00:36
the start of the festival. In fact, most of you will spend Tuesday dry, | 0:00:36 | 0:00:39
better day than Monday, although it will stay rather misty and grey | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
across the English Channel, Channel Islands, further rain or drizzle, | 0:00:42 | 0:00:46
which could get close the south coast at times. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
And more wet weather to the north-west of Scotland | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
and the west of Northern Ireland. But for most it's a dry day | 0:00:50 | 0:00:53
and with light winds, especially further east, very | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
pleasant in the variable amounts of sunshine, temperatures | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
at levels they should be for the time of year. | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
As we go through Tuesday night and into Wednesday, | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
low pressure to the north-west of us will bring further showers | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
to Scotland and Northern Ireland but this weather front waving, | 0:01:05 | 0:01:08
that's linked into the misty, low cloud through the English Channel | 0:01:08 | 0:01:11
on Tuesday, pushing its way north into some southern | 0:01:11 | 0:01:13
and eastern parts of England, bringing a greyer day, a damper day, | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
occasional rain or drizzle, maybe the odd heavier burst | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
and humidity levels starting to creep up too. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
Further north and west of that, we stick in the fresher, | 0:01:21 | 0:01:23
by comparison, Atlantic air, but still warm enough in the sunshine, | 0:01:23 | 0:01:26
only one or two showers to speak of. Let's deal with that humid air | 0:01:26 | 0:01:29
cos it starts to build again through this week, | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
across France in particular, and it shows signs that we will start | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
to draw it towards us | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
particularly through Wednesday night into Thursday. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
With it, of course, comes the risk of thunderstorms. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
Those thunderstorms could become nasty, limiting sunshine | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
as we go into Thursday and mainly focused towards East Anglia | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
and the south-east, but don't forget it could be a little bit further | 0:01:47 | 0:01:50
east of that at this range, maybe a bit further west, | 0:01:50 | 0:01:52
so keep checking the forecast, cos where you see those storms | 0:01:52 | 0:01:54
they will be intense. North and west of that some clearer skies, | 0:01:54 | 0:01:57
some sunshine, only one or two isolated showers and fresher. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
Fresher air trying to win through into Friday, | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
clearing off those storms off into the North Sea, | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
but there's just a small chance we could see that humid air curve back | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
in towards the north-east of Scotland and into Shetland. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
Most though, by Friday, largely into the Atlantic air, | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
sunshine, a few showers around, mainly prone towards western areas | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
by this stage. And we've still got a broad area of low pressure | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
with us as we go into the start of the weekend. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
We'll have to watch how close this stuff gets, though, | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
there is the potential of more thundery, humid air close by. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
But at the moment, it does look like we'll stay in the | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
Atlantic regime. Showers possible anywhere on Saturday, | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
heaviest will be across England and Wales - | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
they may avoid Glastonbury, can't promise it will stay completely dry. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
Where we do see the showers, though, they could be quite heavy at times, | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
rumbles of thunder too. And slow-moving, | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
so rainfall totals for one or two could be rather large. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
As we finish the weekend, slight area of high pressure | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
easing off the showers just a touch. But it's this area of high pressure | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
we really want to be concentrating on as we get to this time of year, | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
this is the Azores High, this is what can bring us | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
some prolonged drier weather. Now, next week it just flirts with us, | 0:02:57 | 0:03:01
to be honest, it extends its way towards southern areas | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
at times, drying things out, showers most prone towards the north-west | 0:03:03 | 0:03:07
of the country, jet stream driving those in, but every now and again | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
the high pressure will recede, the showers will start | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
to work their way southwards and eastwards so any one of us will have | 0:03:13 | 0:03:16
a little bit of wet weather at times through the week, | 0:03:16 | 0:03:18
before that area of high pressure builds back in once again. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
So it's an oscillating pattern next week, ever-changing. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
But if you've tickets for the first week of Wimbledon, | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
you'll want that high pressure to stay around a little bit longer. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:29
Bye for now. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:30 |
