Hello there. Summer in Britain. Frustrating, isn't it? | 0:00:03 | 0:00:05
It's the end of June and we're all desperate for some prolonged, | 0:00:05 | 0:00:09
settled summer sunshine. Just look at Weston-super-Mare | 0:00:09 | 0:00:12
on Monday - not a cloud in the sky. Beautiful. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:16
But unfortunately, | 0:00:16 | 0:00:17
the weather for the week ahead really looks quite changeable. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:20
Yes, we'll see some sunshine at times, | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
but it will eventually turn cool and breezy from Thursday onwards, | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
and some of the rain quite heavy. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
Now, the first signs of a change already starting to | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
make its impression felt across the southwest. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
It will bring some rain through the early hours of the morning. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:36
We start off dry and bright in sheltered eastern areas, | 0:00:36 | 0:00:39
clouding up all the time. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:40
The rain turning quite heavy into the south-west | 0:00:40 | 0:00:43
and across parts of Wales. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:44
Little more showery in nature through Northern Ireland, | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
northern England and Scotland, but underneath the cloud, | 0:00:46 | 0:00:50
the showers or the longer spells of rain, pretty dismal. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
Perhaps staying dry in the south-east corner | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
until the afternoon. That's perhaps good news for Wimbledon. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
Underneath the cloud and rain, disappointing. | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
14, 15 degrees - highest values maybe of 20 Celsius. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:04
Now, that rain continues to push its way steadily eastwards | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
and then a chilly night to come, Tuesday into Wednesday, | 0:01:07 | 0:01:11
before we do it all again - almost a repeat performance. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
So, yes, starting off dry and bright with sunshine out to the east. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:18
The cloud gathers, the rain arrives, the winds strengthen | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
and some of that rain quite heavy again across the southwest, | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
through Wales, pushing into northern England. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
Showery through Scotland and through Northern Ireland. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:29
Now, that rain will clear away and then we see a brief ridge of | 0:01:29 | 0:01:33
high pressure building, so Thursday will actually start off quite quiet. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:37
Quite a lot of cloud around and the winds will gradually strengthen | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
through the day, particularly into the southwest, gusting to | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
gale force at the end of the day. And eventually more significant | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
rain moves into Northern Ireland and into north-west Scotland. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:50
Interestingly enough, the winds here will start to swing round | 0:01:50 | 0:01:52
to a north-westerly direction. That's going to be important. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:56
That is going to drag down cooler air from the north as we move | 0:01:56 | 0:02:00
out of Thursday into Friday. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
A noticeably different feel in the weather. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
Perhaps with the exception of the southeast, | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
but, unfortunately, as we move towards the real end of June, | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
it's going to feel disappointing, particularly if you're caught | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
underneath these showers or longer spells of rain for a time. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
Here, the temperatures perhaps low to mid teens at the very best. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:19
We keep some sunshine down to the south, | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
and that's potentially where we'll keep some warmth. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
High teens, maybe up as high as 20 or 21 degrees if we're lucky. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:27
Further north, 14 to 16 at the very best. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
Now, as we move into the weekend, we still keep this cooler, | 0:02:30 | 0:02:34
showery regime up into the northwest. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
Still the risk of some showers further south, | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
but hopefully not quite as many. 14 to 19 degrees, the high. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:43
Now, as we approach the second half of the weekend, | 0:02:43 | 0:02:45
we need to point out two areas of interest. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
One, this area of low pressure running through the Channel, which | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
may bring more significant rain to the south, | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
but a lot of uncertainty - it's a long way away at the moment. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
And the other, this area of high pressure. The Azores high. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
That's what we need to give us the settled summer sunshine. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:02
Now, as we move into the six-to-ten-day period, there is | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
a potential that the Azores high might just move a little bit | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
further into play and push the jet stream - which is driving | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
the low pressures in - a little bit further north, | 0:03:11 | 0:03:15
which means that there is always the potential to stay cooler | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
and more showery further north, but if the high-pressure just | 0:03:17 | 0:03:21
moves into the south, here it will be warmer, almost humid, | 0:03:21 | 0:03:25
and maybe the risk of a return to some thundery showers. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
A lot to play for. I'll update you tomorrow. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:30
Good to have you back, sir. I never thought I'd live to see the day. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:35 |
