Hello. If you're a gardener or grower I suspect it's been

0:00:030:00:05

a frustrating summer so far, because for some it's either been

0:00:050:00:08

very wet then very dry, or vice versa.

0:00:080:00:10

Met Office statistics for July up to and including Thursday

0:00:100:00:13

suggest that at St Catherine's Point on the Isle of Wight

0:00:130:00:15

it's been the driest July on record -

0:00:150:00:17

just over 1mm of rain.

0:00:170:00:19

But in contrast, at Stornoway in north-west Scotland,

0:00:190:00:22

the third-wettest July on record.

0:00:220:00:25

This is the rainfall distribution across the UK in July.

0:00:250:00:28

Where you're in the brown you've been drier,

0:00:280:00:29

the blue wetter, the white close to average.

0:00:290:00:32

This is almost a complete reversal of fortunes compared with June,

0:00:320:00:35

where the south and south-east was wetter

0:00:350:00:37

and the north-west drier.

0:00:370:00:39

So technically overall summer so far may just seem like average rainfall,

0:00:390:00:42

but if you're growing something,

0:00:420:00:44

from one extreme to the other, that is quite difficult.

0:00:440:00:46

Is there any rain on the way to

0:00:460:00:48

those drier parts of southern England in July, as August begins?

0:00:480:00:51

You don't have to wait very long. Low pressure is spreading rain

0:00:510:00:55

into parts of England and Wales on Monday,

0:00:550:00:57

the Isle of Wight is about to get some rain.

0:00:570:00:59

So here it comes towards Wales, south-west England,

0:00:590:01:02

eventually extending later in the day

0:01:020:01:04

further east into parts of the Midlands and south-east England.

0:01:040:01:07

Northern England holding on to sunny spells,

0:01:070:01:09

much of Scotland, Stornoway dry with sunny spells bar the odd shower,

0:01:090:01:12

increasing cloud, mainly dry in Northern Ireland.

0:01:120:01:15

As we go through Monday evening and night, that rain reaches across

0:01:150:01:18

to eastern England, still avoiding the north of Northern England

0:01:180:01:21

and Northern Ireland. Scotland on Monday night having clear spells.

0:01:210:01:23

The chilliest weather here,

0:01:230:01:25

some of those in the countryside getting down to single figures.

0:01:250:01:28

But it's a warmer night across southern parts

0:01:280:01:30

with the cloud and outbreaks of rain.

0:01:300:01:31

Now, for Tuesday it's a complex pressure pattern and frontal set-up,

0:01:310:01:34

but this weather front is the main player,

0:01:340:01:37

extending northwards Tuesday into Wednesday,

0:01:370:01:39

taking some outbreaks of rain.

0:01:390:01:41

So on Tuesday, that will be pushing through parts of England and Wales

0:01:410:01:44

into Northern Ireland, but still Scotland mainly dry on Tuesday,

0:01:440:01:48

having the sunniest of the weather.

0:01:480:01:50

Now, with this weather front coming into southern parts

0:01:500:01:53

we start to introduce some more humid, warmer air,

0:01:530:01:55

so temperatures creep up a few degrees.

0:01:550:01:57

Fresh in Scotland, but then again, you've got some sunshine.

0:01:570:02:00

Tuesday into Wednesday, the weather front is pushing further north,

0:02:000:02:03

so that's going to take some outbreaks of rain at this stage

0:02:030:02:06

into Scotland, some rain on the way into Stornoway.

0:02:060:02:10

Low pressure close by Northern Ireland.

0:02:100:02:12

The threat of occasional rain in Northern England.

0:02:120:02:14

To the south of that, a few showers, a bit warmer still,

0:02:140:02:16

but watch out - the far south-east of England

0:02:160:02:18

there is a trailing weather front close by,

0:02:180:02:20

may threaten some heavier outbreaks of rain on Wednesday.

0:02:200:02:23

We'll keep you updated on that.

0:02:230:02:25

Then Thursday to Friday,

0:02:250:02:26

low pressure crossing the northern half of the UK,

0:02:260:02:29

taking at least showers, so Scotland, Northern Ireland,

0:02:290:02:32

Northern England mostly on Thursday, fewer showers to the south,

0:02:320:02:36

and those temperatures just starting to come down a couple of degrees,

0:02:360:02:39

more of a north-westerly flow starting to develop across the UK,

0:02:390:02:42

a process complete on Friday

0:02:420:02:44

with sunshine and scattered showers across the board.

0:02:440:02:47

Now, we've just a weekend, but this forecast looks further ahead

0:02:470:02:50

and is already looking ahead to the weekend coming.

0:02:500:02:52

May not want to, though, when you see this.

0:02:520:02:54

Another area of low pressure coming in,

0:02:540:02:56

and this looks like it's going to push some wetter and windier weather

0:02:560:03:00

across the UK on an active jet stream staying with us.

0:03:000:03:03

And the Atlantic influence with this jet stream

0:03:030:03:06

is the most favoured solution

0:03:060:03:08

as we look at our weather going into next week,

0:03:080:03:10

and that will maintain changeable weather -

0:03:100:03:12

occasional wet, occasional dry spells coming through,

0:03:120:03:15

and temperatures up and down but overall close to average.

0:03:150:03:17

There's a lesser solution - we may see something a bit more settled

0:03:170:03:20

across southern parts of the UK, so why not make a regular date

0:03:200:03:23

with this forecast to see how that story unfolds,

0:03:230:03:26

and the rest of August too? Bye-bye.
