31/07/2016 Weather for the Week Ahead

Hello - this isn't the warmest late July summer weather

we've ever had but actually, on this date last year,

it was even colder.

In fact, this night last year,

some of us were about to get

a record cold July night -

the temperatures even across parts

of southern England falling into

low single figures.

Now, again, it isn't that cold -

however, we still have

a coolish west-north-westerly flow

across the UK, and under predominantly

clear skies, as Sunday begins.

Some will be into below single figures,

I think, in sheltered Scottish glens,

but mostly rural temperatures

of 5 to 10 Celsius.

Early showers south-east England

become isolated for the afternoon.

Early showers in northern Scotland

become more widespread across Scotland,

Northern Ireland and northern England for the afternoon.

Some heavy, maybe with thunder.

The rest of England and for Wales,

many of us will avoid the showers

and stay dry, but you may catch one.

High teens, low 20s for the temperature.

A breezy picture

across the northern half of the UK.

Now, again through Sunday evening and night,

many of the showers will fade away.

I'm hiding something, though,

approaching from the Atlantic,

and that's an area of low pressure.

Again, as we start Monday,

rural temperatures will be lower than this,

particularly for northern England, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Further south, the cloud coming in

initially from this area of low pressure.

Breeze picking up around it as well

and this will slide in from west to east,

gradually, during Monday and really focusing,

not showers, but a spell of persistent rain

into England and Wales.

Could take some time to reach eastern England.

It may not get there,

to parts of northern England, Northern Ireland,

or indeed Scotland.

So maybe just a few showers left here.

Increasing humidity with this system

coming in from the Atlantic

and temperatures reaching into the high teens.

Go from Monday into Tuesday,

that spell of rain scoots through,

across, again, parts of England and Wales.

Low pressure still close by on Tuesday

and another band of rain set to push

its way northwards.

This one looks like it'll fragment

on its journey north-east, during Tuesday,

so turning a bit more showery -

plenty of cloud, mind you.

Maybe some early sunny spells into Scotland.

Temperatures up a little bit,

cos there's more humidity, more warmth,

coming in with these weather systems.

Then as we go from Tuesday into Wednesday,

well, one moves away, but we're very close

to low pressure, however you look at it.

Could still see a band of wet weather

affecting parts of Scotland on Wednesday,

and there could be a front close

to southern England with outbreaks of rain.

We have to keep a close eye on that as well.

Looking like a breezy picture,

particularly across southern areas.

Low pressure beginning to edge away on Thursday,

it's turning a bit cooler and fresher once again,

and we'll see a mixture

of sunshine and showers.

If you want summer heat,

where should we be looking?

Well, it's still there, of course,

across the Mediterranean,

where we get our heat from -

sometimes we tap into that,

or draw something up

from the continent, from the south-east.

Either way, that's where we'd expect

some summer warmth to be arriving.

Clearly, though, that's not happening

in the week ahead, because our weather

is coming from the water, the Atlantic,

we're seeing these weather systems

coming in and actually,

we can project this and go even further, now -

by the end of the week,

there may be a little bit of a gap that may last into

the start of next weekend but you can see, again,

that track of systems on the jet stream,

across the Atlantic,

keeping it changeable, we think,

up to mid-August at least.

So the Atlantic influence,

the jet stream pushing those weather systems through.

Not wet all the time -

there will be drier, sunnier moments.

It may get briefly warmer, then cool down again,

giving us just average temperatures.

Nothing special, no summer warmth on the horizon.
