Hello, it's a Bank Holiday weekend ahead for most parts of the

0:00:030:00:06

UK and when that happens the weather is never straightforward.

0:00:060:00:09

More on that in a moment because even before we get to the

0:00:090:00:11

weekend there's going to be some fun and games in the skies,

0:00:110:00:13

the heat and humidity likely to trigger some thunderstorms.

0:00:130:00:16

We could just start to see one or two heavy showers drifting up

0:00:160:00:19

into southern areas later on on Wednesday.

0:00:190:00:22

For Scotland and Northern Ireland, a much brighter day on Wednesday,

0:00:220:00:25

and a comfortable day here too, 19 or 20 degrees.

0:00:250:00:28

With more cloud generally across England and Wales

0:00:280:00:30

it won't be as hot but the heat and humidity continue.

0:00:300:00:33

Another sizzler - across the south-east and East Anglia

0:00:330:00:36

over 30 Celsius is possible.

0:00:360:00:38

And then the heat, the humidity, spark the thunder storms.

0:00:380:00:40

We'll see more of them developing on Wednesday evening,

0:00:400:00:43

pushing further north and throughout Thursday

0:00:430:00:45

the risk of some torrential downpours.

0:00:450:00:47

All that energy causing the potential for some pretty

0:00:470:00:50

violent storms. Difficult to say exactly where.

0:00:500:00:52

Parts of the Midlands, northern England could be most prone,

0:00:520:00:55

but we could see some across Wales, East Anglia too.

0:00:550:00:57

Still quite warm across the south-east but not as warm.

0:00:570:01:00

Temperatures generally elsewhere high teens, low 20s,

0:01:000:01:03

a fine day generally

0:01:030:01:04

on Thursday for Scotland and Northern Ireland.

0:01:040:01:07

And then into Thursday and Friday that weather front finally

0:01:070:01:10

takes its downpours away. Weak area of high pressure starts to build.

0:01:100:01:13

There is this area of low pressure. More on him in a moment.

0:01:130:01:16

Because the high promises for most of us a fine day on Friday.

0:01:160:01:19

Still with that weather front nearby and some warmth across the

0:01:190:01:23

south-east we may see one or two showers.

0:01:230:01:25

And there will be some showery rain and

0:01:250:01:27

a brisk breeze across the far north-west of Scotland.

0:01:270:01:30

But for most Friday is a fine day, a comfortable day again,

0:01:300:01:32

with temperatures at high teens or low 20s.

0:01:320:01:35

And then into the weekend.

0:01:350:01:38

I talked about that low-pressure system a moment or so ago and it's

0:01:380:01:41

gradually, and I do mean gradually, edging towards us.

0:01:410:01:44

As it approaches from the south-west it could draw up some warmth

0:01:440:01:47

once more from the near continent.

0:01:470:01:50

I talked yesterday about how the jet stream is in this more

0:01:500:01:53

elongated pattern and when that happens everything becomes

0:01:530:01:56

slow-moving and when things are slow-moving it adds

0:01:560:01:58

to the uncertainty.

0:01:580:01:59

In this little kink, that's the breeding ground for an area

0:01:590:02:02

of low pressure, which is just chugging towards the UK.

0:02:020:02:06

So it will slowly be bringing outbreaks of rain tracking

0:02:060:02:09

northwards but some uncertainty about the position of this

0:02:090:02:12

band of rain.

0:02:120:02:13

It could be further north, it could be further south.

0:02:130:02:15

As I said it may introduce some warmth again across the South.

0:02:150:02:19

We're reasonably happy that during the weekend at some point the

0:02:190:02:22

low will cross the UK.

0:02:220:02:24

So most of us will see some rain,

0:02:240:02:25

most likely on Sunday across Scotland and Northern Ireland,

0:02:250:02:28

heavy showers most likely across England and Wales.

0:02:280:02:32

So the weekend is complex.

0:02:320:02:34

It's not a complete write-off by any means.

0:02:340:02:36

There will be some warmth and there will be some sunshine too but

0:02:360:02:39

I think we'll all also need to be prepared for a spell of rain.

0:02:390:02:43

Into Monday, Bank Holiday, except in Scotland of course,

0:02:430:02:46

it does look a little drier. Fewer showers? Why so?

0:02:460:02:49

Finally that low-pressure starts to pull away and we've got

0:02:490:02:52

a little bump, a little ridge of high pressure

0:02:520:02:55

for Bank Holiday Monday.

0:02:550:02:56

How long will it last?

0:02:560:02:57

Not too long because there's more low-pressure systems close by.

0:02:570:03:00

Looking further ahead into next week, I talked about the jet

0:03:000:03:03

stream in this more wavy-like pattern through the weekend,

0:03:030:03:07

into next week we're back to a more standard pattern, you might say.

0:03:070:03:10

Not a particularly strong jet but when it's in this kind of position

0:03:100:03:13

it drives low-pressure systems across the northern half of the UK.

0:03:130:03:17

So here we are more likely to see more changeable weather.

0:03:170:03:20

There will be some brisk breezes and some outbreaks of rain but

0:03:200:03:23

further south, promising signs next week.

0:03:230:03:25

To the south of that jet stream we should see some fine

0:03:250:03:27

and settled weather. Goodbye.
