29/08/2016 Weather for the Week Ahead

What's going on in the tropics this week may have

an indirect bearing on what goes on with our weather next week.

Stay tuned, I'll fill you in in a few minutes.

But for most of us through this week,

plenty of dry and warm weather,

particularly across southern and eastern areas.

Further north and west

there'll be more cloud at times,

breezy conditions. There will be some rain,

but even here there'll be

decent dry weather as well.

This is how Bank Holiday Monday looks.

Good news for many of us,

bar the odd shower early on

across eastern counties

most of us will have a fine day

with plenty of pleasant sunshine.

We'll see thickening cloud eventually

across Northern Ireland and Western Scotland,

an approaching weather system here.

This strength in the wind keeping it cool.

Further south and east in the sunshine

it should feel very pleasant indeed

with temperatures up in the low,

possibly mid 20s.

A glancing blow from this weather system

across the far North-West

as we go through the night into Tuesday.

That should clear away

leaving just the odd drib and drab of rain

towards western coasts and hills.

A bit of cloud still across the North-West,

but further south and east in the sunshine

it'll feel very nice,

temperatures even higher, into the mid,

possibly high 20s across the South-East.

Cooler and fresher to the north-west,

with a strengthening wind.

The next weather front coming in

brings a splash of rain

to Northern Ireland and Western Scotland,

but as it tracks its way

south and east through Wednesday,

it'll weaken, so much of the rain will fade away.

It never really makes it to southern and eastern areas,

so another fine day to come here

with temperatures again doing well.

Behind that weather front,

fresher conditions with blustery showers,

particularly for the West of Scotland.

Here's the big picture for later in the week.

High pressure still holding sway

across many central and southern areas.

Another weather system comes in off the Atlantic,

we'll have to keep an eye on that.

But for the time being on Thursday,

plenty of fine weather. Could be a cool start,

but in the sunshine it'll feel very nice indeed,

and with light winds temperatures back up

into the low to mid 20s across the South.

Always that bit fresher across the North.

By the time we reach the end of the week,

this front coming in from the West

will make its presence felt,

but as a slowing future.

There's uncertainty about its progress eastwards,

but it looks as if we'll see wet weather

for Northern Ireland and Western Scotland

again on a strengthening wind.

Whereas further south and east

across the country we'll hold on

to at least one more

fine and potentially pretty warm day.

Temperatures again doing very well

for what will be early September,

up into the mid, possibly high 20s.

Again, it will be fresher

towards the North and West.

Big question marks about the progress of that front

eastwards through the weekend,

but I think we'll see unsettled weather

gradually spreading across the country.

So some rain at times,

cooler conditions for the South and East.

I mentioned the tropics,

we're keeping a close eye on Hurricane Gaston.

We also have a tropical depression further west in the Atlantic.

And these sources of energy

will start to move their way northwards.

Gaston will no longer be a hurricane,

but an area of low pressure, an injection of energy,

up towards us and our jet stream

will have a rippling downstream effect.

Gaston is not going to reach our shores, we think.

It looks as if through early next week,

low pressure will dominate

across northern and western areas

and high pressure could hold sway

across the more southern

and central parts of the UK.

But I must reiterate,

there's a lot of uncertainty

generated by these tropical features.

We'll keep an eye on Gaston.

It looks like staying away, but it may have

a knock-on effect on our weather

for the early part of next week.
