08/09/2016 Weather for the Week Ahead

Hello. If you caught the last instalment of this forecast,

you'll know I was talking about

how tropical air from former tropical cyclones

pushing north across North America

is partially responsible

for strengthening the jet stream

coming out of North America,

across the Atlantic towards us,

and carried on that stronger jet stream,

deeper areas of low pressure.

And that means when they get to us,

some heavier rains and stronger winds as a result

and we can follow the first of those deeper areas

of low pressure coming out of North America,

riding the jet stream,

and heading towards us over the next few days.

In fact, by the end of Friday,

it'll be getting here

and I'll show what it's going to do in a moment.

Before that gets in,

we have a weaker weather system

crossing the UK during Thursday

but it is still significant

because if you don't like the humidity,

this weather front is introducing cooler

and fresher air across the UK,

initially with a bit of rain on Thursday,

a few showers follow,

actually good sunny spells though

for many during the afternoon.

A windier day, a cooler, fresher day

but still quite pleasant if you get some sunshine.

Cooler on Thursday night,

easier for sleeping.

One or two showers around on Friday

but then remember that deeper area

of low pressure -

here's its rain and stronger winds

coming in towards Northern Ireland

and Western Scotland by the end of Friday.

We're all going to see

a spell of heavy rain out of this.

Here's that area of low pressure going into Saturday.

These weather fronts then sweeping south-eastwards

and, again, with those brisk winds as well.

Well, those weather fronts

are still around for England and Wales

as Saturday begins so a spell

of heavy rain pushing south-east,

brighter skies following on behind,

a few showers to Northern Ireland

and Western Scotland.

Now, that may be out of the way

by the end of Saturday.

We get a brief ridge of high pressure

but there is another deeper area of low pressure

riding the jet stream and coming towards us

by the end of Sunday.

This one includes a bit of energy

from former hurricane Hermine

so what does that mean?

It means when the rain comes, it'll be heavier.

As a result, the winds may be a bit stronger too.

And that weather system is still around

towards the north-west of the UK, we think,

going through Sunday night and into Monday.

Concerned a little bit about

how much rain towards the north-west of the UK,

maybe parts of Northern Ireland into Western Scotland,

we're going to see,

so we're going to keep you updated on that.

Ahead of that, warmer and more humid once more.

Beyond Monday, it looks like

there's a couple of ideas about what

might happen, it is still far from certain.

Now, it may well be that

during Monday into Tuesday,

this system finally pulls away south-eastwards,

we're back into an Atlantic changeable flow -

bit of a gap, another weather system,

then a gap, then another weather system

as we maintain a general north-west, south-east split

as the week goes on.

Lower pressure towards the north-west.

If you're closer to this,

more likely you'll see a bit of wind and rain.

Higher pressure towards the south,

not much in the way of rain,

it's drier and warmer as a result.

But there is another possibility

for a time midweek

and that's that we just draw up some warmer,

more humid air northwards across the UK

for maybe a couple of days,

maybe the chance of a few thundery showers.

Even if this happens,

and we think it's just brief,

and then we get back

to the idea of a north-west, south-east split

later in the week as it turns changeable.

Again, the closer you are

towards the south and south-east of the UK,

the closer you are to high pressure,

it is relatively settled compared

with north-western parts of the UK

where you're closer to low pressure,

you'll see a bit of wind and rain at times.

Still, a lot to play for in the detail next week.
