Interesting week. | 0:00:03 | 0:00:04
Not the dramas of heat and heavy rain over the last day or so but | 0:00:04 | 0:00:07
some interesting developments in the jet stream over the week ahead | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
in this part of the Northern Hemisphere which will make | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
forecasting quite challenging. More of that in a moment. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:15
As far as the weekend's concerned, one thing we can be sure of, | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
it's going to be a fresh-feeling couple of days and certainly | 0:00:17 | 0:00:20
a chilly start to your Saturday in many areas, with temperatures | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
in rural spots well down into single figures under clear skies. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:27
The exception across some eastern counties of England, | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
where we've still got some damp, dreary weather, | 0:00:30 | 0:00:32
and if anything, that's going to start to edge westwards into | 0:00:32 | 0:00:35
some central areas as we go through the day, with the odd spot of rain. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
Best of the sunshine will be further west. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
A lovely afternoon to come for Scotland, Northern Ireland, | 0:00:41 | 0:00:44
the more north-western parts of England and down across Wales, too. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:48
A delightful afternoon to come here with light winds, | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
sunshine and temperatures up into the mid-to-high teens. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
South-west England doing pretty well too. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
But for the Midlands, north-east England, south-east England, | 0:00:55 | 0:00:59
some of that cloudy, damp, chilly, dreary weather. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
It might brighten up across East Anglia but by the same token, | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
we could see the odd sharp shower developing here, too, because | 0:01:05 | 0:01:08
this weather front really never dies a death. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
It's still there as we go into Sunday, | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
so a lot of cloud in association with that and the odd shower. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
Another front then enters the fray across Northern Ireland | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
and Western Scotland, with some wet weather here. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
Somewhere in between, there's going to be some dry, bright weather | 0:01:20 | 0:01:24
through this central slice of the UK. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
Temperatures again much fresher than they have been. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28
Through the early part of next week, we're going to see fronts trying | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
to come in off the Atlantic and most of the oomph of those fronts | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
will be across the more north-western parts of the UK, | 0:01:34 | 0:01:38
but this one gets stranded across central areas on Monday | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
with some outbreaks of rain. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
On either side, drier, maybe the odd shower across the south-east, | 0:01:43 | 0:01:47
probably some of the best of the brightness | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
across parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
Now, that front tends to break up in situ across England and Wales. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:55
Still the odd shower left behind. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:56
The next weather front not far off from Northern Ireland | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
and Western Scotland but actually on Tuesday, plenty of dry weather here. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:03
Then on Wednesday, that next frontal system starts to edge in | 0:02:03 | 0:02:07
across Northern Ireland and Scotland, so, as I say, | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
it's the more north-western parts of the UK which are likely to see | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
most of the wet weather through the early-to-mid part of next week. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
Further south and east, drier, brighter, pleasant enough | 0:02:16 | 0:02:20
with light winds, though not the heat we've seen in recent days. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
Temperatures mostly stuck in the mid-to-high teens. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
If you've been watching, I've been talking about | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
the fact that the Arctic is getting colder and colder now | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
as we approach the Equinox, with lobes of cold air pushing out | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
of Canada, through Greenland and into the Atlantic, | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
meeting lobes of warm tropical air coming up from the south, | 0:02:37 | 0:02:41
and where those two meet, where they clash, that tends to rev up | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
the jet stream - the stronger the temperature gradient, | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
the stronger the jet stream - | 0:02:47 | 0:02:48
and we'll get a pretty strong jet later next week. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
It's going to carry frontal systems into those more | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
north-western parts of the UK, so that's where most of the rain | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
will be through the mid-to-latter part of next week. | 0:02:57 | 0:03:01
Further south and east, though, that jet really getting deflected away, | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
and the reason for that lies to our east, because we have a block here | 0:03:04 | 0:03:09
in the atmosphere which is kind of fending off this Atlantic jet, | 0:03:09 | 0:03:13
and as long as it does that, that's going to keep | 0:03:13 | 0:03:16
the more southern and eastern areas somewhat drier. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19
So we've got that battle between the Atlantic jet against | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
the Continental block, which means western areas will be wettest, | 0:03:22 | 0:03:25
eastern areas will be driest, we think. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
We'll update you again tomorrow. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:30
