Hello there. Well, what a week it has been.

0:00:020:00:04

Some extreme record-breaking heat for September,

0:00:040:00:07

but also some significant stormy weather.

0:00:070:00:10

Now, the week ahead looks a little more benign

0:00:100:00:12

and probably, you will be pleased to hear,

0:00:120:00:14

a little more autumnal in flavour.

0:00:140:00:16

Yes, some cloud around and outbreaks of rain from time to time.

0:00:160:00:19

But in between those cloudy, wet spells,

0:00:190:00:22

there'll also be some breaks in the cloud

0:00:220:00:24

and some sunshine coming through.

0:00:240:00:26

Now, if we have clear spells by day,

0:00:260:00:28

through the night, as we get into the middle of September,

0:00:280:00:30

we could see some mist and fog forming

0:00:300:00:33

and some of that may well be slow to clear.

0:00:330:00:35

So more of an autumnal flavour to our weather

0:00:350:00:37

as we go through the week.

0:00:370:00:39

There will be some dry weather in the offing

0:00:390:00:41

and some sunshine coming through on Sunday.

0:00:410:00:43

A better day in prospect across much of eastern England,

0:00:430:00:46

particularly in comparison to the cloudy skies on Saturday.

0:00:460:00:49

Now, north-west Scotland and Northern Ireland

0:00:490:00:51

will see some outbreaks of rain, some of it heavy at times.

0:00:510:00:54

Clouding over across eastern Scotland

0:00:540:00:56

and maybe through north-west England and Wales.

0:00:560:00:58

More cloud around than we've seen on Saturday.

0:00:580:01:01

Hopefully, though, further east of that

0:01:010:01:03

the cloud should start to break up,

0:01:030:01:04

we'll see some sunshine coming through.

0:01:040:01:06

More sunshine across eastern England in comparison to Saturday.

0:01:060:01:09

And temperatures will be a degree or so higher, 20 or 21 degrees here.

0:01:090:01:14

That weather front that's bringing the rain into the north-west

0:01:140:01:17

slowly sweeps its way south and east,

0:01:170:01:18

but it's really going to take its time in doing so

0:01:180:01:20

and will weaken off a band of cloud

0:01:200:01:22

and the odd spot or two of showery, drizzly rain by Monday.

0:01:220:01:26

Ahead of it, we see some brightness and 19 degrees.

0:01:260:01:29

Behind, fresher, but a little more sunshine coming through.

0:01:290:01:32

And that is going to be the theme as we run through the week, really.

0:01:320:01:35

That weather front slowly meandering its way south and east.

0:01:350:01:39

By the time it clears away from the south-east corner,

0:01:390:01:41

really just a band of cloud, the odd spit and spot in the wind.

0:01:410:01:45

Brighter, fresher conditions follow on from behind.

0:01:450:01:48

But with those clearer skies,

0:01:480:01:49

we could see some patchy mist and fog forming.

0:01:490:01:52

14 or 15 degrees to the north-west,

0:01:520:01:54

still a little warmer in the south-east with highs of 20 degrees.

0:01:540:01:57

On Wednesday, there will be a good deal of dry weather in the offing,

0:01:570:02:00

albeit on the cloudy side.

0:02:000:02:02

A more significant area of cloud, wind and rain

0:02:020:02:04

into Northern Ireland and Western Scotland

0:02:040:02:07

looks likely to be the feature.

0:02:070:02:09

And this, again, is going to make

0:02:090:02:10

painfully slow progress further east.

0:02:100:02:13

So we will see some wet and windy weather

0:02:130:02:15

continuing across north-west Scotland and north-west England

0:02:150:02:18

for a time and rainfall totals will tot up.

0:02:180:02:21

But elsewhere, cloudy skies and the odd spot or two of rain

0:02:210:02:24

and a little warmer here with 19 degrees.

0:02:240:02:27

So Thursday looks like a pretty messy day.

0:02:270:02:29

What's happening at the moment

0:02:290:02:31

is we are dragging in this cold air from the Arctic

0:02:310:02:34

and it's bumping into the warm tropical air

0:02:340:02:36

that we've got across the Atlantic at the moment.

0:02:360:02:39

Where the two meet, that's where we really see the battleground,

0:02:390:02:42

more energy into the atmosphere,

0:02:420:02:44

and that is invigorating the jet stream at the moment.

0:02:440:02:47

Now, usually when we get a fast-moving jet across the country,

0:02:470:02:50

it throws these areas of low pressure

0:02:500:02:52

and these frontal systems across the UK

0:02:520:02:54

and it stays pretty unsettled.

0:02:540:02:56

But as you can see, there's quite a significant kink

0:02:560:02:58

in the jet stream at the moment and the reason being

0:02:580:03:01

is an area of high pressure across the near continent

0:03:010:03:04

and that's blocking, it's preventing the low pressures

0:03:040:03:07

from moving across the country.

0:03:070:03:08

So they're sitting up into the north-west

0:03:080:03:10

and pushing across the north-west.

0:03:100:03:13

That's where the most unsettled weather is likely to be.

0:03:130:03:16

So for the longer six- to ten-day period,

0:03:160:03:18

it remains pretty changeable.

0:03:180:03:20

The wettest of the weather looks likely to remain in the north-west,

0:03:200:03:23

with the driest in the south-east.

0:03:230:03:25

Don't forget, where we get those clear skies,

0:03:250:03:27

we get some patchy mist and fog forming.

0:03:270:03:29

Take care.
