Hello. So far the month of September has been quite a showstopper. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
Before we take a look at the close of the month, | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
let's look back at last week. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:10
In fact, we were breaking records. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:11
Just shy of 35 Celsius was recorded at Gravesend, Kent. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:15
That is 94 Fahrenheit. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
We haven't seen temperatures like that in September | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
for over 100 years. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
We also had three consecutive days of 30 degrees and we haven't | 0:00:21 | 0:00:25
seen temperatures like that in September since 1929. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:29
Now, it all came to a bang on Thursday and Friday with heavy, | 0:00:29 | 0:00:33
torrential, thundery downpours. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
Rainfall totals like this in Suffolk, | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
that is a month's rain in just 24 hours. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
By the time got to the weekend, | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
we did have some clearer skies and weather watchers could send in | 0:00:42 | 0:00:45
some amazing photographs | 0:00:45 | 0:00:46
of the harvest moon, | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
the last full moon before the autumn equinox. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
That takes place on Thursday. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
Pleased to say we are heading for a slightly quieter week. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
There will be some sunshine, a bit of rain around | 0:00:55 | 0:00:59
and temperatures near normal for the time of year. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
Now, the rain could be quite heavy for a time across | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
Northern Ireland and north-west England over the next few days. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:08
The weather fronts skirting in | 0:01:08 | 0:01:09
across the Atlantic but bumping into | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
high pressure which weakens that weather front considerably | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
and then the rain will ease off. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
The jet stream is fairly active, | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
so it is driving these weather fronts in from the Atlantic. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
You can see quite a significant kick in the jet stream. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
An omega block, this high pressure killing off the weather fronts | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
and not allowing too much rain to push south and east. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:31
The first signs of that is on Monday. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
Sitting across Lincolnshire, East Midlands down into the | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
south-west, a weakening band of cloud. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
Underneath that it is going to feel cool and disappointing. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
To the south and east, | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
we should get some sunshine and feel quite pleasant. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
To the north-west, a bit fresher - | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
15 to 19 degrees the high on Monday. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:50
As we push out of Monday into Tuesday, | 0:01:50 | 0:01:52
that weather front not moving far very fast and it will still | 0:01:52 | 0:01:56
be a band of cloud, the odd spot of light rain and drizzle. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
A bit of a nuisance really. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
If we get some sunshine coming through, again we could see | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
temperatures quite promising with highs of 20 degrees. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
As we move out of Tuesday into Wednesday, | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
another fairly active weather front pushes into the north-west. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
Again, it could bring some heavy pulses of rain across | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
Northern Ireland and western Scotland and winds will strengthen. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:19
But further south and east, we're not expecting too much | 0:02:19 | 0:02:22
in the way of wet weather. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:23
15 in the cloud and the rain, 20 degrees the high but those | 0:02:23 | 0:02:27
clearer skies could bring some early mists and fog patches. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
Similar story to Thursday, but I suspect we could see | 0:02:30 | 0:02:33
the potential for some sharper showers around on Thursday. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:37
We need to keep a close eye on that. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
But again, 15 to 20 degrees the overall highs across the UK. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:43
As we move out of Thursday into Friday, | 0:02:43 | 0:02:45
it looks likely to see more significant winds, | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
perhaps gales up into the far north-west | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
and, again, the potential for some rain. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
But further south, | 0:02:52 | 0:02:53
high pressure blocking those weather fronts from making an impression. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:57
It seems there's a good deal of dry weather in the story. | 0:02:57 | 0:02:59
Mist and fog could be an issue, but again, | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
once the sunshine comes through, it will felt relatively pleasant. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
So looking further ahead, | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
there is little sign of any significant change. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
We keep that high pressure blocking the weather fronts, | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
pushing the low pressures further north | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
and so that means there's always the potential for some wetter and | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
windier weather into the far north-west. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:20
Further south, early morning mist and fog could be an issue. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:23
That will lift away to some decent spells of sunshine. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:27
A quieter theme to come over the next few days. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:30 |
