Hello. Low pressure systems, weather fronts, isobars,

0:00:030:00:05

some sunshine and some early-morning mist and fog -

0:00:050:00:08

the weather for the next week or so is a classic autumnal mix-up.

0:00:080:00:12

And it is often, no matter which way you measure it,

0:00:120:00:15

as of Thursday, because Thursday marks the autumn equinox.

0:00:150:00:19

All to do with the position of the Earth rotating around the sun,

0:00:190:00:22

and it's in such a position on Thursday

0:00:220:00:25

that day and night are pretty much equal,

0:00:250:00:27

so from now on,

0:00:270:00:28

the nights will be longer than the days.

0:00:280:00:31

We are pretty much in autumn, and you can

0:00:310:00:34

tell by weather fronts out in the Atlantic.

0:00:340:00:37

The first of those fronts fizzling out during Thursday,

0:00:370:00:40

just bringing cloud across central areas

0:00:400:00:43

and a few showers tracking eastwards.

0:00:430:00:45

Either side of that, some September sunshine

0:00:450:00:47

lifting temperatures potentially over 20 degrees

0:00:470:00:50

across East Anglia and the south-east,

0:00:500:00:52

more typical values elsewhere 15 to 17.

0:00:520:00:54

There'll be showers in the far north-west.

0:00:540:00:57

We'll see a few more showers in the evening

0:00:570:00:59

across Northern Ireland, Scotland,

0:00:590:01:00

north-west England,

0:01:000:01:02

but for many, it will be a dry night

0:01:020:01:04

and a cooler night

0:01:040:01:05

across the south and the east.

0:01:050:01:08

Some mist and fog,

0:01:080:01:09

but that will clear quickly and for most,

0:01:090:01:11

Friday is a fine, bright, dry day

0:01:110:01:13

with sunny spells.

0:01:130:01:14

Notice the wind starting to pick up,

0:01:140:01:16

another weather system in the far north-west.

0:01:160:01:19

Temperatures 15 to 19 Celsius.

0:01:190:01:21

That weather system drifts to the north of the UK,

0:01:210:01:23

but its trailing weather front

0:01:230:01:25

is the main player through the weekend.

0:01:250:01:27

Lots of isobars, so winds picking up,

0:01:270:01:30

and this front bringing a lot of heavy rain,

0:01:300:01:32

looks particularly soggy over western Scotland.

0:01:320:01:35

Turning wet across western parts of England and Wales.

0:01:350:01:39

Ahead of that front, southerly winds

0:01:390:01:41

yet again sucking up some warmth,

0:01:410:01:43

so we could, with hazy sunshine,

0:01:430:01:45

reach 23 degrees Celsius.

0:01:450:01:47

Some uncertainty about the timing of that front,

0:01:470:01:49

but it could be draped across East Anglia

0:01:490:01:51

and the south-east on Sunday morning,

0:01:510:01:53

potentially a damp start here.

0:01:530:01:55

It clears and then we see sunny spells,

0:01:550:01:57

a bit of a breeze,

0:01:570:01:58

temperatures close to the average

0:01:580:01:59

because we've got more of a westerly influence.

0:01:590:02:02

There'll be plenty of showers on Monday,

0:02:020:02:05

and behind me, things are

0:02:050:02:07

getting complicated out in the Atlantic,

0:02:070:02:10

and that's the main problem next week. Why so?

0:02:100:02:13

Well, not to do with this storm, Lisa,

0:02:130:02:16

but more to do with this storm, Karl.

0:02:160:02:18

It is a tropical depression.

0:02:180:02:20

It'll intensify and drift northwards.

0:02:200:02:22

As it does so, it's likely to get close to Bermuda through the weekend

0:02:220:02:27

and potentially may become a hurricane.

0:02:270:02:30

When these kind of storms start to drift north,

0:02:300:02:33

they interact with our weather

0:02:330:02:35

because they interact with the jet stream,

0:02:350:02:37

that fast-moving ribbon of air high up.

0:02:370:02:39

Usually, the jet stream drives the system

0:02:390:02:41

at the ground,

0:02:410:02:43

but when you've got something with as much energy as

0:02:430:02:45

a tropical storm,

0:02:450:02:46

or potentially a hurricane,

0:02:460:02:48

that can influence the jet stream,

0:02:480:02:49

so it adds to complications

0:02:490:02:51

and uncertainty, so the jet stream

0:02:510:02:53

tending to come in like this

0:02:530:02:55

through much of next week,

0:02:550:02:57

which means the wettest,

0:02:570:02:59

windiest weather will be across

0:02:590:03:00

more northern parts of the UK,

0:03:000:03:02

but we are also going to be

0:03:020:03:04

on the warm side of that jet,

0:03:040:03:05

and there's the potential

0:03:050:03:07

to draw up someone warm air,

0:03:070:03:09

especially around the

0:03:090:03:10

middle part of the week.

0:03:100:03:12

I'm using words like "potential"

0:03:120:03:14

and "possibly" because of Karl,

0:03:140:03:16

and the interaction grows the uncertainty

0:03:160:03:19

so generally next week, often quite blustery,

0:03:190:03:22

the wettest in the north-west,

0:03:220:03:23

but Karl adds uncertainty,

0:03:230:03:25

hints it might get a bit warmer.

0:03:250:03:27

We'll definitely be keeping you posted.

0:03:270:03:30

Watch this. It is amazing.
