Hi, there. Time for a look at the weather over the next week or so. | 0:00:03 | 0:00:06
Now, normally, our weather comes in from the west, doesn't it? | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
Not for the next few days. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:09
For the next few days, our weather's going to be coming in from the east, | 0:00:09 | 0:00:12
and the reason for that is a huge, great block in the atmosphere, | 0:00:12 | 0:00:15
and that's preventing the jet stream from coming in off the Atlantic, | 0:00:15 | 0:00:18
and driving rain-bearing weather fronts in our direction. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:22
They're getting fended to the north and to the south of us | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
by that block in the atmosphere, | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
and a big area of high pressure | 0:00:27 | 0:00:29
is going to be dominant for several days to come, | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
and circulating around that high pressure, | 0:00:31 | 0:00:32
winds coming in from an easterly direction. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:36
In fact, that easterly wind will be with us on Tuesday. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:39
It's a dry wind, which is good news if you want fine weather, | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
because, bar the odd isolated shower, | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
it should be dry throughout the day. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
Some areas of low cloud around, | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
particularly near some eastern coasts, | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
but west will be best for sunshine across Scotland. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
This snapshot for four o'clock in the afternoon, | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
and most of us will be set fair. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
It'll feel quite pleasant in that October sunshine - | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
temperatures up into the mid to high teens, | 0:00:58 | 0:01:01
though that wind will be quite brisk, | 0:01:01 | 0:01:02
particularly down towards the south coast, | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
so you'll have to get out of that breeze, | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
and in the sunshine to benefit, with that warmth. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
So, a fine day to come on Tuesday. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
A fine day for some on Wednesday. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:13
Subtle differences - bit more cloud in the sky, | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
bit more of a breeze, temperatures a bit lower, as well, | 0:01:16 | 0:01:20
particularly near that east coast, | 0:01:20 | 0:01:21
where you get exposed to that wind coming off the North Sea. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
The high pressure is still there through the middle part of the week, | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
but we're going to start to see increasingly chilly air | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
coming down around that high. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:30
This air originates, actually, in Arctic Russia - | 0:01:30 | 0:01:33
don't get too worried, it's not going to be THAT cold, | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
but a blob of blue, nonetheless, | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
wafting its way in our direction, | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
so, the message is, through the second half of this week, | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
it's going to start to feel quite chilly, | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
particularly where you keep a lot of cloud, | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
and that's most likely across the more central and eastern areas. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
Thick enough to give, perhaps, the odd shower. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
Still a lot of dry weather, | 0:01:51 | 0:01:52
western areas probably seeing the best of the sunshine. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
So, to sum up this week, then, | 0:01:55 | 0:01:56
most of us will stay dry. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
That breeze will be a feature, | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
and that breeze will turn increasingly chilly with time. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
It's still there on Friday. Again, a fair bit of cloud, | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
and that cloud will produce a few showers scattered around - | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
again, I must emphasise that most places will stay dry. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
If you're lucky, you'll see some sunshine, | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
but a chill to that wind, for sure. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
Similar story on Saturday, really. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
Difficult to pick out the detail at this range, | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
but the main themes are, still that easterly wind, | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
still that block to the Atlantic weather system, | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
so most places dry, the odd shower. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
What's going to change that? | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
Well, obviously, we're keeping a very close eye | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
on Hurricane Matthew. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:32
It's roaring its way up through the Caribbean, | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
leaving a trail of destruction, I'm afraid. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
From the likes of Haiti | 0:02:36 | 0:02:38
it's going to continue to move its way northwards. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
Powerful winds, massive storm surge, | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
huge amounts of rain. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:43
Through the Bahamas, we think, | 0:02:43 | 0:02:44
and then, later on in the week, | 0:02:44 | 0:02:46
it'll be parked just to the east | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
of the mainland of the USA. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:50
"So, what?" I hear you say. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
Well, the significance of Matthew | 0:02:52 | 0:02:53
is that eventually it might start to interact | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
with our jet stream. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:57
Now, at the moment, that jet stream is blocked, | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
as I say, as it hits the UK, | 0:03:00 | 0:03:01
it diverts to the north and the south, | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
and, like a stone in the water, | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
we've got this huge, great block to the east of us, | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
preventing those rain-bearing weather fronts | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
from coming in our direction, | 0:03:10 | 0:03:11
so, high pressure remains in control. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
The big question mark is, | 0:03:14 | 0:03:15
how will Matthew interact with that jet stream? | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
Like flicking a skipping rope, | 0:03:18 | 0:03:19
it might have some downstream effects, | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
which might break that block. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:23
But, for the time being, it stays chilly, with those brisk winds. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
Always the best of the sunshine across the west, but most of us dry. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
We'll update you again tomorrow. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:30 |
