With weather patterns in the west of Europe

0:00:030:00:04

fairly blocked at the moment, in that they're not changing

0:00:040:00:07

in a hurry, we've been turning our attention

0:00:070:00:09

over the past week to the western Atlantic,

0:00:090:00:10

to see how that may influence things.

0:00:100:00:12

Our latest thing to watch out for is this -

0:00:120:00:14

Hurricane Nicole.

0:00:140:00:16

Strengthened during the latter stages of Tuesday

0:00:160:00:18

to hurricane status.

0:00:180:00:19

Could hit Bermuda on Thursday with

0:00:190:00:21

winds in excess of 100mph,

0:00:210:00:22

dangerous surf and torrential rain.

0:00:220:00:25

From then on, it looks like it'll push its way

0:00:250:00:27

northwards into the north-west Atlantic,

0:00:270:00:28

where it might actually meander

0:00:280:00:30

as we go into the weekend,

0:00:300:00:31

and in hanging around here,

0:00:310:00:33

it won't have any direct influence

0:00:330:00:35

to our weather, but into the latter stages

0:00:350:00:37

of next week, it may strengthen

0:00:370:00:39

the weather patterns enough -

0:00:390:00:40

the Jet Stream, that is - to push these areas

0:00:400:00:42

of high and low pressure out of the way.

0:00:420:00:44

This is what we've got at the moment.

0:00:440:00:46

High pressure stuck across Scandinavia

0:00:460:00:47

and, starting to come onto the scene,

0:00:470:00:49

this area of low pressure across Iberia.

0:00:490:00:51

Far away enough at the moment,

0:00:510:00:52

so for Wednesday, high pressure dominant,

0:00:520:00:54

easterly winds,

0:00:540:00:55

bringng occasional showers, lots of cloud

0:00:550:00:57

into eastern parts of the country.

0:00:570:00:59

One or two showers further west,

0:00:590:01:01

but some good breaks in the cloud,

0:01:010:01:02

some sunshine at times.

0:01:020:01:03

You'll notice, southern counties of England,

0:01:030:01:05

a lot cloudier - round the coast,

0:01:050:01:06

could be heavy showers.

0:01:060:01:08

Windiest conditions in the south.

0:01:080:01:09

Winds generally picking up UK-wide

0:01:090:01:11

by this stage, as an area of high pressure

0:01:110:01:13

sits across Scandinavia,

0:01:130:01:15

and the low pressure starts to get closer to it.

0:01:150:01:17

Closer they are, the stronger the winds tend to be.

0:01:170:01:20

And so a breezier day for all on Thursday,

0:01:200:01:22

and quite a cool breeze at that.

0:01:220:01:23

Like we'll have seen on Wednesday,

0:01:230:01:25

cloud mainly to the east

0:01:250:01:26

with occasional rain but that will

0:01:260:01:28

push its way westwards, slightly greater chance

0:01:280:01:30

of a few showers on Thursday.

0:01:300:01:32

Probably driest weather

0:01:320:01:33

across southern England and Wales,

0:01:330:01:34

the best of the sunshine.

0:01:340:01:36

But wherever you are, for some,

0:01:360:01:37

temperatures struggling to get into double figures -

0:01:370:01:39

add on the effect of the wind,

0:01:390:01:41

probably the coolest-feeling day of the week.

0:01:410:01:42

That will continue across northern areas on Friday.

0:01:420:01:45

On the northern flank of this area of low pressure,

0:01:450:01:47

the winds will be stronger -

0:01:470:01:48

Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England.

0:01:480:01:50

You'll notice the low pressure

0:01:500:01:52

is coming more into play by Friday.

0:01:520:01:54

So, some longer spells of rain pushing

0:01:540:01:55

into Wales, the south-west,

0:01:550:01:56

potentially across Ireland, too.

0:01:560:01:58

Something drier at times for the east,

0:01:580:02:00

but lots of cloud around,

0:02:000:02:01

and a real bite to that wind

0:02:010:02:03

as it pushes in, touching gale force

0:02:030:02:05

at times in the north.

0:02:050:02:06

Now, by Saturday and the weekend,

0:02:060:02:08

look how the low pressure

0:02:080:02:09

is the main, dominant feature of our weather

0:02:090:02:11

to the south-west of the UK.

0:02:110:02:12

Winds revolving around - still strongest

0:02:120:02:14

across Scotland and Northern Ireland,

0:02:140:02:16

northern England, fairly cloudy, here.

0:02:160:02:18

Longer spells of rain

0:02:180:02:19

pushing in towards the east.

0:02:190:02:20

Brighter weather through England and Wales,

0:02:200:02:22

though, further south,

0:02:220:02:23

in-between slow-moving, heavy and thundery showers.

0:02:230:02:25

Winds a bit lighter for the time being,

0:02:250:02:27

and it does feel a little bit warmer.

0:02:270:02:29

That low-pressure system pushes the west of Ireland

0:02:290:02:31

into Sunday, does mean the winds pick up

0:02:310:02:32

across England and Wales,

0:02:320:02:34

but it's a southerly wind, get a bit of sunshine,

0:02:340:02:36

feeling reasonably nice, there.

0:02:360:02:38

But showers possible just about anywhere in the UK,

0:02:380:02:40

some heavy and thundery,

0:02:400:02:41

and plenty of low clouds across eastern districts

0:02:410:02:44

of Scotland and north-east England.

0:02:440:02:47

So, we finish the weekend, going into next week

0:02:470:02:49

with, still, a blocked pattern.

0:02:490:02:51

The Jet Stream is strengthening across to North America,

0:02:510:02:54

but it splits, and so it doesn't really shift

0:02:540:02:56

the high pressure we have to the north,

0:02:560:02:58

and what we then have

0:02:580:02:59

is low pressure to the west of the UK.

0:02:590:03:01

So, into next week, with things slow-moving,

0:03:010:03:03

low pressure there, expect further cloud,

0:03:030:03:05

outbreaks of rain at times just about anywhere,

0:03:050:03:08

quite breezy with that, too,

0:03:080:03:09

although there will be drier and brighter moments.

0:03:090:03:11

How it feels in those drier, brighter moments

0:03:110:03:13

depends on when the low pressure sits.

0:03:130:03:15

If it's to the west, we drag in our air from the south,

0:03:150:03:17

in a slightly warmer direction.

0:03:170:03:19

If that low-pressure system moves to the north,

0:03:190:03:21

we drag in our air off the Atlantic.

0:03:210:03:22

It will feel a little cooler.

0:03:220:03:23

That's the main uncertainty for next week,

0:03:230:03:25

then, by the end of the week,

0:03:250:03:26

whether the Jet Stream strengthens enough

0:03:260:03:28

to clear that low-pressure system away.
