25/10/2016 Weather for the Week Ahead

Hello again.

The shape and the position of the jetstream will be crucial

in determining our weather patterns over the next ten days.

We'll see that a little later.

The next few days, though, will see some changes.

After a chilly start to the week,

temperatures will be rising day and night.

We will be seeing some stronger westerly winds developing,

but as we will see, it is not going to bring much rain at all.

We start cold, frosty,

potentially with some fog across northern

parts of the UK on Tuesday.

Milder, but damp and dreary in the south.

The rain and drizzle in the south peters out.

Sunnier skies will continue

to be across northern parts of the UK.

With little wind in Scotland,

Northern Ireland and northern England,

it should be a lovely day.

Showers along the east coast of Scotland

are moving away because the wind direction is changing.

It'll take a while to get the sun out,

possibly through the Midlands, Wales,

southern England.

The afternoon will be drier, the cloud should lift.

Skies will brighten. If you're lucky,

especially along the south coast,

you may get a glimpse of the sun.

But it is in the cloudier skies in the south

that we'll find the highest temperatures.

Now, temperatures across the north

will not really drop very much on Tuesday night.

That is because the first change comes in,

you get these westerly winds,

increasing amounts of cloud,

and in the north-west, some outbreaks of rain.

Still dry but rather cloudy further south.

Any breaks in the cloud

and there will be some patchy mist and fog.

Here, the winds are lighter,

you can see more isobars on the chart

for the northern half of the UK on Wednesday,

together with that weather front.

That front is very weak,

not bringing much rain at all.

The rain tends to peter out, actually,

as the weather front moves into England and Wales.

The south-east still dry.

More in the way of cloud, though,

we will see some stronger winds

across many northern areas.

Gusty to the east of high ground.

And it will be milder as well, across the board,

temperatures will be higher during the day.

A significant change for the northern half of the UK.

That weather pattern continues on Thursday.

Again, the chance of some rain,

mainly over the hills in the north-west.

Staying dry with lighter winds to the south.

Temperatures near or above average.

So, more isobars for northern parts of the UK,

fewer in the south, lighter winds,

higher pressure across many southern areas

to end the week as well.

We've got a little rain, maybe, to come

across Northern Ireland

into Western Scotland during the day on Friday.

But away from here, I think it may well be dry.

Limited amount of sunshine,

but decent temperatures once again.

We are finding this high pressure

is starting to build across the UK by the end of the week,

in time for the weekend.

That will tend to push away these weather fronts

towards the north-west, take the rain away too,

up towards the Northern Isles of Scotland, perhaps.

Many other areas will be dry,

a little sunshine at times,

but still those temperatures,

pretty good for the time of year.

Let's look at the jetstream, though, over the next ten days.

We start midweek with this zonal jetstream,

running from West to East, very strong jet.

North of it, lower pressure, cooler air -

south of it, higher pressure and milder air.

Things change, though, by the weekend,

high pressure builds in, we get a buckling of the jetstream,

and this is the sort of position we are expecting,

that will steer the rain up towards the north-west.

Things move on, though, into next week, the start of the new month.

This is the expected position of the jetstream,

so we are into the colder air across the eastern side of the UK,

more of a northerly wind could bring some sunshine and showers

out towards the west, maybe just about in the milder air,

closer to the area of high pressure.
