Thanks for joining me. Merry Christmas.

0:00:020:00:04

Let's see what the weather is up to

0:00:040:00:05

in the run up to the New Year.

0:00:050:00:07

There are some changes coming our way.

0:00:070:00:09

It's been very windy, mild, breezy, stormy, even,

0:00:090:00:14

in northern parts of the UK in the last few days.

0:00:140:00:16

Certainly Christmas, no change there.

0:00:160:00:18

Storm Conor raging out there in the Atlantic.

0:00:180:00:21

This is one of the reasons why it's so mild outside.

0:00:210:00:25

This big wind storm is drawing all of that warmth

0:00:250:00:28

from the Azores.

0:00:280:00:29

That's sitting right on top of us,

0:00:290:00:31

just in time for Christmas Day.

0:00:310:00:34

So, for some of us, actually near record-breaking,

0:00:340:00:37

it's so mild.

0:00:370:00:38

Santa's braving those very strong winds,

0:00:380:00:41

Conor is just to the north of the UK here,

0:00:410:00:43

sending gale-force winds into Scotland.

0:00:430:00:46

There'll be some rain around,

0:00:460:00:47

damp at the very least, and cloudy.

0:00:470:00:49

Ten degrees first thing in the morning

0:00:490:00:51

across some southern areas,

0:00:510:00:53

a little bit colder in the north.

0:00:530:00:54

Here's the forecast for Christmas Day.

0:00:540:00:56

Basically mild south-westerlies.

0:00:560:00:58

There'll be blustery showers

0:00:580:01:00

across parts of Scotland.

0:01:000:01:01

So here you will need your brolly,

0:01:010:01:03

but steady in the wind -

0:01:030:01:04

it really will be screaming gales

0:01:040:01:06

across these western parts of Scotland.

0:01:060:01:08

Maybe a bit of brightness,

0:01:080:01:09

particularly to the east of the Pennines.

0:01:090:01:11

There maybe the clouds breaking up

0:01:110:01:14

across the Welsh hills, and in the south too,

0:01:140:01:17

a hint of maybe a little bit

0:01:170:01:18

of milky sunshine coming through.

0:01:180:01:20

But, essentially speaking,

0:01:200:01:21

it's very cloudy and mild out there.

0:01:210:01:23

You can see the numbers - 12, 13,14.

0:01:230:01:26

There's even a slim chance we might

0:01:260:01:27

get up to 15 degrees Celsius.

0:01:270:01:29

Here's a look at Christmas Day.

0:01:290:01:30

In the evening, more squally showers,

0:01:300:01:32

really gusty showers, that is,

0:01:320:01:34

moving into northern parts

0:01:340:01:35

of England and Wales as well.

0:01:350:01:37

This big area of low pressure here -

0:01:370:01:39

an old area of low pressure -

0:01:390:01:40

that's still Storm Conor

0:01:400:01:42

raging out across the Norwegian Sea,

0:01:420:01:44

still sending very strong winds

0:01:440:01:45

into northern parts of Scotland for Boxing Day.

0:01:450:01:48

The warnings in force from the Met Office here.

0:01:480:01:51

To the south of that,

0:01:510:01:52

the weather is going to be a lot, lot quieter.

0:01:520:01:54

Conor is certainly not going to be

0:01:540:01:56

affecting the weather further south.

0:01:560:01:57

Well, it's still going to be

0:01:570:01:59

sending that mild air our way,

0:01:590:02:00

but that's pretty much it.

0:02:000:02:01

Notice some rain, some gusty showers

0:02:010:02:04

across the north here, whereas in the south,

0:02:040:02:06

just a few dribs and drabs of rain

0:02:060:02:08

during the course of Boxing Day.

0:02:080:02:10

Look at these numbers.

0:02:100:02:11

Certainly doesn't feel like the end of December.

0:02:110:02:13

After all of this wind and big areas of low pressure,

0:02:130:02:15

complete change.

0:02:150:02:17

High pressure will start dominating the weather

0:02:170:02:19

from Tuesday.

0:02:190:02:20

Actually, fog may be a problem

0:02:200:02:22

rather than wind as we go through Tuesday into Wednesday.

0:02:220:02:25

Wednesday morning in particular, I think,

0:02:250:02:27

is a candidate for some very thick, perhaps even widespread fog

0:02:270:02:32

across parts of England,

0:02:320:02:34

particularly central, southern, south-eastern areas.

0:02:340:02:37

This high pressure will stick around

0:02:370:02:39

through Wednesday and into Thursday.

0:02:390:02:41

But in the north-west of the country,

0:02:410:02:43

low pressures are trying to push in,

0:02:430:02:45

so there will be contrasts across the UK

0:02:450:02:48

as we slowly edge towards the end of the year.

0:02:480:02:52

So north-western parts of the UK, Scotland, Northern Ireland,

0:02:520:02:55

probably more likely to have a bit of a breeze,

0:02:550:02:57

maybe some rain at times.

0:02:570:02:59

The further south and east you are,

0:02:590:03:01

you're likely to have some bright weather,

0:03:010:03:03

but remember - there is that risk of thick,

0:03:030:03:06

widespread - perhaps widespread -

0:03:060:03:08

fog across southern areas.

0:03:080:03:11

As we head towards the New Year,

0:03:110:03:12

on the cusp of the old and the new year,

0:03:120:03:14

there's going to be a battle of milder air

0:03:140:03:16

coming in from the south and colder air.

0:03:160:03:19

The colder air probably arriving

0:03:190:03:21

in just about 2017,

0:03:210:03:23

but exactly how this is going to pan out

0:03:230:03:26

is still too early to say.

0:03:260:03:28

Thanks for watching.
