Thanks for joining me.

As forecast, Christmas Day was exceptionally mild across the UK.

0:00:030:00:07

I don't think we beat any records, we are still checking on that.

0:00:070:00:10

But it was close.

0:00:100:00:12

Temperatures around 100 years ago were 15.6 degrees.

0:00:120:00:15

Today we recorded in Scotland around 15.1.

0:00:150:00:19

There still might be one or two other stations that need

0:00:190:00:22

checking to confirm that that indeed was the highest.

0:00:220:00:24

But it is a selection of some of the temperatures we had today.

0:00:240:00:27

Hereford at 14, Hull at 14, London at around 13 degrees.

0:00:270:00:31

Now, there is a change heading our way.

0:00:310:00:33

This line of rain here, which will be crossing southern parts of

0:00:330:00:36

the UK, is actually a cold front.

0:00:360:00:38

Behind it, we have some showers and cold air coming in now.

0:00:380:00:42

A day too late for some of us.

0:00:420:00:45

Look at that, wintry showers across parts of Scotland.

0:00:450:00:48

This is still driven by Storm Conor

0:00:480:00:50

which will be passing way to the north of us.

0:00:500:00:53

But because it is such a large weather system,

0:00:530:00:56

it is still sending fierce winds into northern parts of Scotland.

0:00:560:01:00

So, on Boxing Day, there is an amber warning in force

0:01:000:01:03

for northern parts of Scotland.

0:01:030:01:04

Storm force winds there,

0:01:040:01:06

whereas in the south, a completely different story.

0:01:060:01:09

Look at that,

0:01:090:01:10

a lovely Boxing Day across most of England and Wales as well.

0:01:100:01:13

Lots of events taking place this day,

0:01:130:01:15

so the weather is certainly turning perfect for that.

0:01:150:01:17

Not so bad in Northern Ireland, but a bit breezy, maybe one or

0:01:170:01:20

two showers and windy weather there across the Northern Pennines.

0:01:200:01:23

And then into Scotland, very strong winds, gales around these coasts

0:01:230:01:25

and the storm force winds, at least for a time, for Orkney and Shetland.

0:01:250:01:30

So, the southern two-thirds of the country on Boxing Day

0:01:300:01:34

enjoying a fine day.

0:01:340:01:36

In the north, lots of showers and some very, very windy weather.

0:01:360:01:40

Now, we're going to keep the sunny skies but we are also going

0:01:400:01:43

to get some fog in the coming days.

0:01:430:01:44

The reason is that rather than low pressure,

0:01:440:01:47

high pressure starts to build across the UK.

0:01:470:01:50

This is Tuesday morning.

0:01:500:01:51

See some hues of blue here, so there will be a frost around,

0:01:510:01:54

a crisp start to the day.

0:01:540:01:57

A little bit more breeze in the north, so frost-free here.

0:01:570:02:00

But for England and Wales, after a foggy start, sunshine -

0:02:000:02:05

and cooler by day.

0:02:050:02:06

Temperatures only around six or seven degrees.

0:02:060:02:09

And this high pressure will stick around for a while.

0:02:090:02:12

And in the winter time, when the high pressure locks in,

0:02:120:02:15

stalls across one part of the continent, Europe, the UK,

0:02:150:02:20

we tend to get problems with fog

0:02:200:02:22

and where the fog lingers through the day, temperatures struggle.

0:02:220:02:25

Here is an example.

0:02:250:02:26

If the fog lingers, it could be only three degrees during the daytime.

0:02:260:02:28

So if you are travelling between Christmas and the New Year,

0:02:280:02:33

be prepared that it could be tricky,

0:02:330:02:35

especially in the morning on some country roads,

0:02:350:02:38

especially across England and Wales.

0:02:380:02:40

So the summary is, in the run-up to the New Year,

0:02:400:02:43

north-western parts of the UK are actually more likely to have

0:02:430:02:46

the breezier weather, some cloud and bits and pieces of rain.

0:02:460:02:49

That's the far north-west of the country.

0:02:490:02:51

But the bulk of England and Wales, certainly way south-east,

0:02:510:02:55

is looking quite sunny with that frost and fog in the morning.

0:02:550:02:59

And then as we head towards New Year's Eve, there will be a battle

0:02:590:03:02

happening across our part of the world.

0:03:020:03:04

Mild air tries to come back in again.

0:03:040:03:07

Cold air tries to win in from the north.

0:03:070:03:09

Which of these is going to win?

0:03:090:03:12

The thinking is, as we head into 2017, that colder air will win

0:03:120:03:18

but exactly how cold it is going to get

0:03:180:03:20

and whether we get much wintry weather with this

0:03:200:03:22

is still a little uncertain.

0:03:220:03:25

But things are going to finally cool off a little bit.
