Spring is just around the corner, | 0:00:02 | 0:00:03
but when I say that, I mean meteorological spring, | 0:00:03 | 0:00:07
which starts on March 1st, | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
so we've just got a few days of "winter" left. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:14
And how's it looking? | 0:00:14 | 0:00:15
Well, this weekend, relatively mild but very changeable. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:18
But then into March, things will cool off a little bit | 0:00:18 | 0:00:21
and the weather will remain very, very changeable. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:24
So as far as Saturday and Sunday's concerned, | 0:00:24 | 0:00:27
we'll see weather fronts pushing through the UK. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
Here's a look at Saturday. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:31
Fronts moving through, extensive cloud, | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
outbreaks of rain - most of the rain | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
will be across western areas of the UK, | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
and the wind's going to be picking up as well. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
But these are mild southwesterlies, so we're talking about temperatures | 0:00:39 | 0:00:43
into double figures across most of the UK. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
And the most amount of rainfall is expected to fall | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
across the north-west of England, so Cumbria, Lancashire, | 0:00:47 | 0:00:50
places like that. The rain will wax and wane through the weekend, | 0:00:50 | 0:00:53
particularly in between weather fronts it'll dry out, | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
but I think overall it's this portion of the UK here | 0:00:56 | 0:01:00
that will be getting most of the rainfall. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:01
So I think a fairly chilly start to Sunday, and dry, | 0:01:01 | 0:01:05
with some sunshine across many central, eastern and southern areas, | 0:01:05 | 0:01:09
but very quickly, linked to this low pressure here, | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
weather fronts will come zooming in. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
So increasing winds, even gale-force winds a little bit later on, | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
particularly around these southwestern approaches | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
around the Welsh coast. Irish Sea very windy | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
on the coastline, on the hills, and we've got those outbreaks of rain. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:25
So the heaviest of the rain again across these north-western areas | 0:01:25 | 0:01:29
whereas the further east you are on Sunday | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
and the further south you are on Sunday, | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
the better the weather will be. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
So a very breezy Sunday, looks like it's going to be | 0:01:35 | 0:01:38
a very breezy and changeable Monday as well. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
With low pressure sitting on top of us, a very unsettled day. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
I think it's going to be one of those days where you have | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
bright sunshine and dark cloud, | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
maybe some thunder and lightning - all sorts. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
So quite a dramatic day, I think, | 0:01:51 | 0:01:52
as far as the look of the sky is concerned. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:54
We'll see scenes like this | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
and then we'll see some rainbows, a crack of thunder, | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
and perhaps even some hail at times as well. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
So they're kind of April showers, | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
but a lot, lot earlier - still in February. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
Now, as far as the second half of the week's concerned, | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
this big low is hanging around. It's not moving anywhere. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
Does look as though, by the time we get to Tuesday, | 0:02:12 | 0:02:16
those showers will start to ease. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
So there'll be more of them on Monday, | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
but still a few left over for sure on Tuesday. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
And then we're into Wednesday - remember, March 1st, | 0:02:22 | 0:02:26
the first day of meteorological spring. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
And the reason why we pick March 1st | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
is we like to work in blocks of three | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
when we average out the seasons. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
So March, April, May is spring. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
So here it is - the 1st of March, | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
the first day of meteorological spring. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
Quite a bit of sunshine around across central and eastern areas | 0:02:44 | 0:02:46
but we have got yet more weather fronts pushing our way, | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
so inevitably there will be some rain. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
Early March - now, look at this pattern in the jet stream. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
Typically, cold air is to the north of the jet stream, | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
mild air is to the south. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
We're kind of going to be on the cold side of this jet stream | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
and it's quite a powerful jet stream as well, | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
and it could well be sending some pretty nasty areas of low pressure | 0:03:05 | 0:03:09
in our direction once more. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
Way too early to say just how windy or wet it's going to get, | 0:03:11 | 0:03:15
but I think suffice to say | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
it is going to be an unsettled start to March. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
There'll be some rain around, there'll be some drier spells | 0:03:20 | 0:03:23
as well, but because we're on the colder side of the jet, | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
there certainly will be | 0:03:25 | 0:03:26
some chilly weather about. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
Thanks for watching. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:29 |
