26/02/2017 Weather for the Week Ahead

It was just a few days ago that Storm Doris brought

some near-100mph winds across our shores.

Now we've got Storm Ewan on the way.

It's been named by the Irish Met Service,

because a significant impact expected in Ireland,

but we'll see really strong winds across our shores

and some heavy rain, and not just some heavy rain -

there's wintry weather in the forecast, too.

Storm Ewan is developing all the while,

heading our way as we get into Sunday.

A real squeeze on those isobars,

around the Irish Sea coast,

we'll see the winds really picking up.

Some heavy rain in Northern Ireland,

pushing into the western side of England,

Wales, southern Scotland, too.

Gusts of wind will be 50-60mph,

70mph with exposure around some coasts.

So, very wet, very windy

for the north and the west of the UK.

Much drier and relatively mild

down towards the south and east.

But some wetter, windier weather

does move through through the evening,

at least for a time.

It's still pretty blustery into

the small hours of Monday morning,

with a good rash of showers coming through,

and there will be some wintry weather

over higher ground.

It'll be quite cold, northern England -

northwards, I think we'll see a touch of frost.

Still a very unsettled look to things

through the day on Monday.

Low pressure still firmly in charge.

Lots of isobars on the charts,

another blustery day,

and we will start off quite wet

across some central and eastern areas,

and we are going to see a lot of cloud

through the day on Monday, with a good rash of showers.

Some spells of sunshine coming through,

but when those showers come along,

there will be some thunder and some hail as well.

Wet weather works its way

eastwards through the morning,

then we'll see sunshine and showers developing

as you get on into the afternoon.

Some showers will bring wintry weather

over higher ground.

There will be some hail, thunder,

with some of those showers -

a little sunshine in-between,

but a colder feel to things.

We are in single figures

pretty much across the board.

Now, Monday night into Tuesday, well,

the big picture still looks fairly complex,

and I think it will be.

With low pressure still in charge,

it's still quite an unsettled look to things.

Maybe lighter winds

for some central and eastern areas,

but still breezy towards the north and the west,

and we will see, again, some spells of sunshine,

but also some showers developing and, again,

a chilly start to the day

and I think it'll be quite chilly

into the afternoon,

with single figures across the board.

As we head on towards Wednesday,

that's, of course, March 1st,

which makes it the first day of meteorological spring.

But I don't think we're going to see

much in the way of springlike weather.

Winds are coming down from the north

and it'll be quite a strong wind

and it will feel quite chilly in that breeze.

But there will be a fair bit of dry weather,

just this central swathe is likely to see

some thicker cloud and some outbreaks of rain,

mainly through the latter part of the morning

into the afternoon.

Drier towards the south and west,

maybe showers towards the north-east,

again, most places seeing temperatures

in single figures.

Still got low pressure close to us on Thursday.

This weather front down towards the south-west

will bring some cloud, some rain, with it

but I think towards the north-east,

after a chilly start, it'll be dry and bright

into the afternoon.

We should see some sunshine here,

bit more cloud further south

and rain tending to fizzle out.

Then as we look ahead into the early part of March,

we are on the cold side

of the jet stream,

so it'll stay quite chilly by day

and by night, some frosty mornings

to come for some.

This trough in the jet stream

will allow areas of low pressure

to develop, and they may well affect

the western side of the UK with some spells of rain,

but equally, there is a low chance

of something a bit more vigorous developing,

but also, a low chance of something a bit more settled

creeping down from the north.

So finely balanced into the early part of March,

but at the moment, it looks like cyclonic,

windy conditions will continue

with some spells of rain moving through,

so some drier spells as well,

but we are in that cold air,

so it will be quite chilly by day

and particularly through the mornings.
