Hello there. For the second part of the weekend, | 0:00:01 | 0:00:04
we saw the fifth named storm of the season. | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
So, I thought I'd start with a quick comparison of | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
last season with this season, comparison of the number | 0:00:08 | 0:00:11
of named storms, because last season was particularly active, | 0:00:11 | 0:00:14
by the end of February we'd gotten all the way down to I | 0:00:14 | 0:00:17
in the list and that was Storm Imogen. This season, | 0:00:17 | 0:00:20
generally speaking, has been that bit quieter. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
We've gotten down to Storm Ewan, only five named storms so far. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:27
But the last two just happened in the last week and Doris | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
certainly packed a punch. But as Ewan moves away, | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
we start to see this colder air spreading in across most parts | 0:00:33 | 0:00:36
of the UK, so it is going to be a chilly old start to the week, | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
in fact, cold enough for some patches of ice in the north and west | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
of the UK, and from early on, there will be some showers around, | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
those showers could be heavy and thundery. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
There will be a real mix of rain, sleet, | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
hail and snow over higher ground but there will be some spells of | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
sunshine as well, | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
the best of that probably into the eastern side of Scotland. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
But it's a chilly day pretty much across the board, single figures | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
for most places, five, six or seven quite typical, | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
but might just get to double figures in the centre of London. | 0:00:58 | 0:01:01
And then through the evening, plenty more showers, | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
some of those quite wintry, some of that gets down to lower levels. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
It'll be quite wet and windy along the south coast and another | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
area of wintry weather into the far north-west. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
But many of the showers in between tend to fade away by | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
dawn on Tuesday and it will be cold and frosty, | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
particularly in more rural spots, but even in larger towns and cities | 0:01:15 | 0:01:18
it's only one or two degrees to start the day. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:19
So, there will be some patches of ice first thing on Tuesday morning, | 0:01:19 | 0:01:23
a few patches of fog as well, and it's quite windy | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
into the north and west of the UK, with an area | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
of low pressure here, and that will bring some rain, some sleet | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
and some snow over higher ground. A bright start for many central areas | 0:01:30 | 0:01:33
but cold. I think we will tend to see things clouding over | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
through the day, as some showers get going. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:38
There will be still be a little bit of sunshine here and there | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
but most places still feeling quite chilly in that breeze - | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
single figures for most of us. And then through Tuesday night | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
into Wednesday, we see that weather front head south, it clears | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
away towards the near Continent, and then the isobars separate | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
a little bit, the winds become a little bit lighter, | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
but we are looking towards the south-west for this next | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
weather system to slowly push its way in. | 0:01:57 | 0:01:59
But it should be a decent start for central and eastern areas, | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
one or two showers but a lot of drier weather. Turning increasingly | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
wet from the south and west and there will be a bit | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
of a breeze to go with that. And that area of rain continues | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
to journey its way ever northwards, but through the day | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
on Thursday, that rain across northern England becomes | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
very light and patchy, as the next batch of rain gets into | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
Northern Ireland. But I think for the southern half of the UK | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
through Thursday, it looks like a decent day. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
It's bright, it's breezy, and we'll see temperatures in double figures, | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
I think, quite widely, but still in single figures further north. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
But generally speaking, towards the end of the week, | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
we are expecting to see temperatures rise, particularly so | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
in the southern half of the UK. And that milder air - | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
question marks about just how far north it does go, | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
but generally speaking, particularly so in the southern half of the UK, | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
turning that bit milder for the end of the week. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
That does come with some weather fronts and they are going | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
to bring some rain with them. So it does look as if it will turn | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
quite wet during the day on Friday, particularly so across | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
England and Wales. And that rain making steady progress | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
northwards and eastwards, and it will get up into | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
northern England, southern Scotland, Northern Ireland later in the day. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:57
The far north of Scotland probably staying dry but it may well be | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
on the chilly side here. And then into next weekend, | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
well, that low-pressure system may well get a bit stuck across | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
that central swathe of the UK. It may well turn a | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
little bit more vigorous as well. But we might, equally, | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
see that area of high pressure to the north-east just drift | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
its way a little bit further south and exert its influence over us, | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
but generally speaking it looks like low pressure | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
will be in charge, even on into the following week, | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
which means that it will stay quite changeable. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
There will be some spells of rain at times | 0:03:22 | 0:03:23
but they will tend to move through, so there will be some | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
drier, brighter spells, as well, and always mildest in the south. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28 |
