Hi there. At the end of the day, the atmosphere is all joined up. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
If you were watching earlier on in the week, | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
I was indicating how developments in North America could influence | 0:00:06 | 0:00:09
our weather come the end of the week, | 0:00:09 | 0:00:10
and it certainly looks like panning out that way. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:13
The weather has been erupting into life across parts of the US, | 0:00:13 | 0:00:17
with violent storms across the Midwest and tornados, | 0:00:17 | 0:00:20
as well, an early start to the severe-weather season across | 0:00:20 | 0:00:24
this part of the world. | 0:00:24 | 0:00:25
What do I mean? Well, scenes like this, | 0:00:25 | 0:00:28
huge tornados rampaging across the plains states and into the Midwest, | 0:00:28 | 0:00:32
and these were the sorts of effects which tornados like this had. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:36
It puts our weather into perspective. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
Very destructive storms across parts of Illinois, for example. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:43
Those storms are injecting a lot of energy into the upper | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
atmosphere, as well, | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
having the effect of shunting the jet stream northwards, | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
and then there's a downstream dip in the jet stream which scoops up | 0:00:51 | 0:00:55
an area of low pressure, producing a pretty wet end to the week for us. | 0:00:55 | 0:01:00
So, what goes on in the States can influence what happens back here. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:04
Nothing as extreme as that, but some fairly rough weather on the way, | 0:01:04 | 0:01:08
in fact, overnight some strong winds and heavy rain and some snow | 0:01:08 | 0:01:12
up over the high ground into parts of England and Wales. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
Things subsiding as we head into the day. Still quite a blustery day, | 0:01:14 | 0:01:18
and the worst of the rain and snow will clear away from central areas. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:22
In actual fact, many of us will settle into a reasonable day, | 0:01:22 | 0:01:26
with some sunshine, just a few showers left behind, particularly | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28
across Western Scotland, where they will still be quite wintry. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
Chilly here, but temperatures higher than they were on Wednesday - | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
across southern areas, up into double figures. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
The trouble is it doesn't last. We look to the south, | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
and as that jet stream scoops up that area of low pressure | 0:01:39 | 0:01:43
I pointed out, here comes the rain to end the week across England | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
and Wales initially - disappointing Friday here, some heavy rain. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:50
For Northern Ireland and Scotland, we'll hold on to the dry and bright | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
weather for longest, but probably it won't last that much longer | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
before the rain eventually arrives. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:57
Pretty chilly in most places, maybe double figures across the south. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:01
But with that low-pressure system set to sit over the top of the | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
UK for much of this weekend, we can expect some wet weather at times. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:09
If that wasn't enough, it'll probably be joined | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
by another low pressure coming in off the Atlantic to join in | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
the fun and to produce more rain. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
So if you've got plans for this weekend, | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
expect some wet weather at times - | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
not all the time, but with a blustery wind, | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
it'll feel quite chilly in most places, as well. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
So, that low pressure in control on Saturday. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
Don't take the position of these blobs of blue too literally. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
The detail may change. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
But in some central areas, there could be some fairly | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
persistent wet weather and a cold easterly wind, too. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
Temperatures always a little bit higher the further south you go. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
By Sunday, maybe some respite before that next area of low | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
pressure joins in the fun, as I mentioned, and perhaps pushes | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
some rain into some south-western areas later on in the day. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
Elsewhere, some drier spells, but with that blustery wind, | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
again it will feel quite chilly. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
So, that's the set-up through this weekend, | 0:02:55 | 0:02:57
with that low pressure positioned in the dip of the jet stream. | 0:02:57 | 0:03:01
As I mentioned, the jet mainly to the south of us, | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
and on the northern side we remain in the rather chilly air | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
through the early part of next week. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
But there are indications from some computer models that the jet stream | 0:03:09 | 0:03:13
may shift northwards, and that would usher in warmer south-westerly winds | 0:03:13 | 0:03:18
giving something a little bit more springlike, perhaps, | 0:03:18 | 0:03:22
later on next week - a long way off, but perhaps | 0:03:22 | 0:03:25
it's something to look forward to. We'll update you again tomorrow. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28 |
