Well, after a fairly chilly Easter weekend, | 0:00:02 | 0:00:03
most of us woke up to some sunshine on Tuesday morning, | 0:00:03 | 0:00:07
but it was cold, | 0:00:07 | 0:00:08
particularly across Scotland. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:10
Temperatures in the glens | 0:00:10 | 0:00:11
got down to minus six degrees | 0:00:11 | 0:00:13
and now Tuesday night into Wednesday, | 0:00:13 | 0:00:14
it's the south where we're going to see | 0:00:14 | 0:00:16
the lowest temperatures overnight. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:18
Here's a satellite picture from earlier on. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
The clearer skies prevalent across the south | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
so here temperatures will be dipping away | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
during the early hours of Wednesday, | 0:00:25 | 0:00:26
whereas to the north with a weak weather front | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
pushing through, more cloud, | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
it won't be quite so cold. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:31
Now in city centres | 0:00:31 | 0:00:32
throughout the country, | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
it won't be that cold - five or six degrees, | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
but in rural areas | 0:00:36 | 0:00:37
and even some suburban areas, | 0:00:37 | 0:00:38
temperatures will be close to freezing | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
or below, perhaps even as low as minus four degrees | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
so once again, a chance of some of those tender plants | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
being affected by the frost first thing in the morning. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
But the morning is starting beautiful | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
across the south. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
Really lovely weather, | 0:00:51 | 0:00:52
feeling quite fresh out there. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:53
Five or six degrees, the winds are light. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
The sun's pretty strong | 0:00:55 | 0:00:56
at eight o'clock in the morning | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
so perhaps we won't feel that cold. | 0:00:58 | 0:00:59
The frost will be around | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
only just before dawn, I think. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
The further north you go, | 0:01:03 | 0:01:04
the thicker the cloud is. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
In fact, even some spots of rain around | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
in one or two places, | 0:01:08 | 0:01:09
but really very, very light | 0:01:09 | 0:01:10
and feeling a little bit milder, | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
maybe eight or nine degrees. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
Through the course of the day, | 0:01:14 | 0:01:15
we are thinking that some of this cloud | 0:01:15 | 0:01:16
is going to drift further south | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
so perhaps throughout Wales, | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
most of northern England and the Midlands, | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
it may cloud over, | 0:01:22 | 0:01:23
but even here, the clouds will break | 0:01:23 | 0:01:24
from time to time. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:25
The best of the weather will be across the south, | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
the south-east and eastern parts of Scotland | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
are in for some sunshine and not so bad there | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
on the temperature front, | 0:01:32 | 0:01:33
maybe 14 degrees in eastern Scotland. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
Thursday, we have high pressure | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
across southern areas of the UK, | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
weather front towards the north | 0:01:39 | 0:01:40
so perhaps some spots of rain | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
around in the far north of Scotland, | 0:01:42 | 0:01:43
maybe affecting the Western Isles as well. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
For most of us, | 0:01:45 | 0:01:46
a fairly brightish sort of day. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
A lot of this cloud will be fairly thin | 0:01:48 | 0:01:50
so perhaps hazy skies for most of us. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:52
15 in London, maybe even 15 again | 0:01:52 | 0:01:54
across eastern parts of Scotland. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
Now, a subtle change on the way | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
towards the end of the week. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
This cold front will be very sluggishly moving | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
across the UK and introducing fresher air, | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
colder air from the north | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
so ahead of it temporarily, | 0:02:07 | 0:02:08
depending on how much sunshine we're going to get, | 0:02:08 | 0:02:10
we could get up to 17 in London, | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
whereas from the north, | 0:02:12 | 0:02:13
that fresher air really will be oozing down | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
and through Friday night | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
and you can think of this line here, | 0:02:17 | 0:02:18
the cold here and the warmer further south, | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
that's the cold front moving through Friday night | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
so once again towards the weekend, | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
we are going to see some fresher north-westerly winds, | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
but with high pressure very close by, | 0:02:28 | 0:02:30
we're never really going to get an awful lot of rain. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
At most, just thicker cloud at times | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
and a few spots of rain, | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
which is not great news for gardeners | 0:02:36 | 0:02:37
because we haven't seen an awful lot of rain | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
for quite some time. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
High pressures just to the west of our neighbourhood. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
We keep those north-westerly winds | 0:02:43 | 0:02:45
through Saturday and most of the weekend. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
Now, here's the weekend schematic once again, | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
so we've got that high pressure here, | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
the low pressure there | 0:02:52 | 0:02:53
and think of the air almost being | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
sort of corkscrewed between the two, | 0:02:55 | 0:02:57
almost pushed through like putty further south | 0:02:57 | 0:02:59
so colder air digs in | 0:02:59 | 0:03:00
into other parts of Europe as well, | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
but it's not desperately cold. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
Now, also what we're forecasting | 0:03:04 | 0:03:05
is a jet stream out of the north-west. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
Notice these little ripples in the jet stream. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
That's an indication | 0:03:09 | 0:03:10
that there will be little low pressures | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
moving towards the north of us, | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
perhaps bringing some outbreaks of rain, | 0:03:14 | 0:03:16
so any rain that we will get | 0:03:16 | 0:03:18
will be coming in from the north | 0:03:18 | 0:03:19
and that doesn't often bring an awful lot of rain | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
so mostly dry, most of that rain that does arrive | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
will be further north | 0:03:24 | 0:03:25
and it is going to stay on the cool side. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:27
Bye-bye. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29 |
