Hello. | 0:00:03 | 0:00:04
This Weather For The Week ahead forecast just about takes us | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
to the end of May but, would you believe it, | 0:00:06 | 0:00:09
it looks as if winter is returning early next week. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:11
In the sunshine, it feels glorious, and we had 19 degrees | 0:00:11 | 0:00:14
in eastern Scotland, some beautiful sunshine | 0:00:14 | 0:00:15
in north-east England on Thursday. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
It was a cloudy affair predominantly. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
This was more akin to the rest of the UK, Stone in Staffordshire. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
But it certainly wasn't a disappointment. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:23
There will be plenty more dry weather on Friday as well. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:27
Perhaps some early fog south of the M4. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:29
You can see our weather front is sinking its way south, | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
so it will be a different day for the east of Scotland | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
in particular. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:35
Cloudy here and much cooler as well, 10 and 11. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
There is still the potential in the south, if we see | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
the breaks in the cloud, for 16 or 17 degrees, | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
which is above average for this time of year. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
And it will remain above average where we see the sunshine this | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
weekend, despite that cold air making its way southwards. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
That will give us some chilly nights with the risk | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
of a touch of grass frost, but the high pressure will mean | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
that the weather front will be quite weak and there won't be a great deal | 0:00:56 | 0:01:00
of rain on it. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:04
For many of us, it's just predominantly cloudy on Saturday, | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
to start, then some breaks come in the cloud, but we are | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
behind that cold front. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:10
There will be some sunshine coming out. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
Quite a different day potentially for the Midlands, | 0:01:12 | 0:01:13
having had a day or two of cloud, but where we keep the cloud | 0:01:13 | 0:01:17
it still feels chilly, particularly in that wind. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
To the south of that, we've got that milder air. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
We keep a very similar sort of weather picture on Sunday, | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
although there's a difference in the north, but we are watching | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
this area of low pressure. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:28
We've been talking about it all week. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:29
It could be bringing us severe gales and some very wet weather, | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
so it's one to watch. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
It just looks at the moment as if it will be for the northern half | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
of the UK, particularly northern Scotland. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
Severe gales here. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:40
For many of us, Sunday isn't a bad day. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
It's very usable weather, that rain later in the day, | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
and we could see 16, despite it being colder air, | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
just because of the strength of the sun at this time of year. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:50
So it does look quite aggressive, that low pressure, but it's starting | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
to move out of the way, and it's allowing a northerly | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
wind to come southwards, and a much colder air stream right | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
down from the Arctic, so true cold air, and it really | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
will be a shock to the system for some of us and, indeed, | 0:02:00 | 0:02:04
we will see some wintry showers, and not just at higher levels. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
It all takes place, the change, behind this cold weather front. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
Not a great deal of rain, we don't think, on the weather system, | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
although it will provide for a cloudy day in southern | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
areas but, behind it, we open those northerly winds up, | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
and there will be lots of showers around, with hail and thunder | 0:02:17 | 0:02:20
and sleet and snow. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:21
It's a strong wind at times, squally as well, so it | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
will accentuate the chill. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:24
We could still see 15, just about, that milder air just hanging | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
on in the south on Monday. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
But, by the end of Monday, not just a shock to our system | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
but also for the flora and fauna so, gardeners and growers, beware. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
But some big hail certainly possible from those big | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
showers and thunderstorms. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
As I say, some very unsettled, disturbed air heading our way. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
It stays that way through midweek. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:48
We've got this feed of cold northerly air. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:50
The high pressure is trying to cut that off, so gradually | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
towards the end of the week we'll start to see the grass frost | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
becoming less severe and the cold air being cut off, | 0:02:56 | 0:03:00
so potentially not such a thick frost later in the week, | 0:03:00 | 0:03:05
but certainly starting that way in the middle part of the week, | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
and eventually, with that cold air being cut off, | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
the showers and big thunderstorms should become less prevalent | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
as well, and the snow showers should become mostly confined to the hills. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:17
But, as I say, it does look as if winter is making its return | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
from Monday onwards, and a really chilly | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
feel in that wind. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
A real risk of thunder, hail, sleet and snow and, of course, | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
the night-time frosts. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:28
Bye-bye. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:29
Bye-bye. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:29 |
