Well, it looks like the week ahead is going to bring a resurgence

0:00:020:00:05

of cold, wintry weather. Just to remind you that winter

0:00:050:00:09

was not that long ago but, in the short term, the rest of the weekend,

0:00:090:00:13

no sign of any cold weather. It's actually not looking bad at all.

0:00:130:00:16

There'll be some sunshine around

0:00:160:00:18

but the mornings will be on the nippy side.

0:00:180:00:20

Now, it's settled right now because we have an area

0:00:200:00:22

of high pressure over us, and any big changes that are heading

0:00:220:00:26

our way are still way towards the north of us.

0:00:260:00:29

So, Sunday starts off on a calm note.

0:00:290:00:31

There will be some sunshine around,

0:00:310:00:33

maybe even some pockets of frost, if you're up very early.

0:00:330:00:35

And the weather's not looking bad at all across southern areas,

0:00:350:00:38

especially for the London Marathon. Quite a fresh run.

0:00:380:00:40

By the afternoon, temperatures might get up to 15 or 16 but,

0:00:400:00:43

on balance, fresh start.

0:00:430:00:45

Now, the changes are already starting to take place

0:00:450:00:48

in the afternoon on Sunday across northern parts of the UK/Scotland.

0:00:480:00:51

Now, this area of low pressure

0:00:510:00:53

is going to be responsible for opening

0:00:530:00:55

the doors to a stream

0:00:550:00:56

of colder air coming in from the northern climes

0:00:560:00:58

so, already, early on Monday,

0:00:580:01:01

we'll see this weather front here,

0:01:010:01:02

let's call it a cold front,

0:01:020:01:04

it's quite a complicated meteorological mess here but,

0:01:040:01:07

essentially, what's happening is we're seeing

0:01:070:01:10

a stream of colder air

0:01:100:01:11

coming in from the north, and wintry showers

0:01:110:01:14

will start to fall across the hills of Scotland.

0:01:140:01:16

Look how big the contrast is

0:01:160:01:18

between the north and the south.

0:01:180:01:20

Then, through the course of Monday into Tuesday,

0:01:200:01:23

that cold front will sweep into the continent,

0:01:230:01:25

and then we start to see that northerly setting in.

0:01:250:01:28

A true, cold northerly wind. Now, how cold is it going to get?

0:01:280:01:31

The important thing to remember is,

0:01:310:01:33

at this time of the year,

0:01:330:01:34

the sun is incredibly powerful.

0:01:340:01:36

So, that means those temperatures

0:01:360:01:38

aren't really going to dip that low.

0:01:380:01:39

We're not expecting sub-zero values

0:01:390:01:41

or anything like that. It's just going to feel cold

0:01:410:01:44

in the wind but those temperatures

0:01:440:01:45

are still going to be pretty low for the time of the year.

0:01:450:01:47

We're talking about maybe six degrees across Scotland and barely

0:01:470:01:50

getting into double figures across southern areas.

0:01:500:01:52

And when we get the cold air and the strong sunshine,

0:01:520:01:55

we see big storm clouds building.

0:01:550:01:56

Some of them will bring hail almost anywhere in the UK.

0:01:560:01:59

And there'll be some snow around as well.

0:01:590:02:01

Mostly across the hills,

0:02:010:02:02

and there is a possibility of that snow settling as well.

0:02:020:02:05

Then, overnight, when the skies clear, we'll probably see

0:02:050:02:08

some frost forming as well.

0:02:080:02:10

So I think a good two or three days of a proper chill on the way.

0:02:100:02:13

Wednesday's going to be the last day when we see those wintry

0:02:130:02:16

showers with hail, maybe some thunder,

0:02:160:02:19

but also plenty of sunshine around as well.

0:02:190:02:21

So, that's Wednesday's weather forecast.

0:02:210:02:23

Those temperatures still into single figures across many areas,

0:02:230:02:26

maybe just about touching double figures across the far south,

0:02:260:02:30

and, in fact, by the time

0:02:300:02:31

we get to Wednesday, look how far south

0:02:310:02:33

this colder air stream will have reached.

0:02:330:02:36

We're talking about the north coast of Spain here

0:02:360:02:38

so this is chilly air that will have originated from the Arctic.

0:02:380:02:41

By the time we get to Thursday,

0:02:410:02:43

that's when the change happens.

0:02:430:02:45

Rather than weather systems coming in from the north,

0:02:450:02:47

we'll start to see weather fronts lining up in the Atlantic

0:02:470:02:50

here and moving from the west.

0:02:500:02:52

Now this here is much milder air

0:02:520:02:53

so, essentially, what's going to happen,

0:02:530:02:56

the colder air stream from the north is going to be cut off

0:02:560:02:59

and we'll start to see weather systems coming in from the west.

0:02:590:03:02

So, Thursday onwards,

0:03:020:03:03

that colder air stream

0:03:030:03:05

should be abating and we'll start to see

0:03:050:03:07

the milder air coming in during the course of

0:03:070:03:10

Friday and the weekend.

0:03:100:03:12

And, eventually, those temperatures will start to climb to normal.

0:03:120:03:15

And, then, beyond next weekend, it looks as though

0:03:150:03:17

things could turn a little more unsettled.

0:03:170:03:19

But, in the short term, the week ahead, certainly a little

0:03:190:03:22

dose of winter across northern hills especially

0:03:220:03:24

and then that frost risk.

0:03:240:03:26

We have to wrap up warmly. That's it.
