Well, as forecast, we were a little battered and bruised

0:00:020:00:05

by the weather on Tuesday -

0:00:050:00:06

a pretty unseasonable area of low pressure

0:00:060:00:08

barrelling across the UK,

0:00:080:00:10

giving us some very heavy rain, lashings of rain,

0:00:100:00:13

and some very strong winds, as well.

0:00:130:00:15

Here's a closer look.

0:00:150:00:16

This is the weather front, here,

0:00:160:00:18

so, lots of heavy rain,

0:00:180:00:19

torrential, at times,

0:00:190:00:20

and then, just within that weather front,

0:00:200:00:22

and to the south,

0:00:220:00:23

that's where we have those gale force winds -

0:00:230:00:25

and very strong for the time of the year -

0:00:250:00:28

in fact, some gusts of wind

0:00:280:00:29

brought a few trees down,

0:00:290:00:30

there were lots of branches, there.

0:00:300:00:32

Gusts, you can see, 50 to 60mph -

0:00:320:00:33

and you don't necessarily get the same effect

0:00:330:00:36

during the winter, because the trees...

0:00:360:00:38

in full leaf, well, they act like kites,

0:00:380:00:40

like sails, and then you get, bang, that gust of wind,

0:00:400:00:43

and the trees come down -

0:00:430:00:44

and, of course, the rain,

0:00:440:00:45

and it's been very heavy

0:00:450:00:47

across northern England and Scotland,

0:00:470:00:49

but a totally different story

0:00:490:00:50

on Wednesday in the morning

0:00:500:00:52

across the south of the country.

0:00:520:00:53

Much lighter winds, some sunshine,

0:00:530:00:56

so, a sigh of relief -

0:00:560:00:58

a much better start to the day, for sure.

0:00:580:00:59

In Northern Ireland, as well,

0:00:590:01:01

western parts of Scotland, too,

0:01:010:01:03

but in the east, here, it's going to take time

0:01:030:01:05

for the remnants of that nasty low pressure to clear away.

0:01:050:01:07

It's a real slow-mover.

0:01:070:01:08

It's still out there in the North Sea,

0:01:080:01:10

and it will take time

0:01:100:01:12

for that rain and wind to completely subside

0:01:120:01:14

from some of these north-eastern areas of the UK.

0:01:140:01:17

You can see a window of fine weather

0:01:170:01:19

developing across the UK on Wednesday,

0:01:190:01:21

so, there will be some sunshine,

0:01:210:01:22

and, probably, watching this,

0:01:220:01:24

this is the next area of low pressure

0:01:240:01:25

behind me, there,

0:01:250:01:27

and by the time we get to the afternoon,

0:01:270:01:28

it looks like more rain will be sweeping into the south-west,

0:01:280:01:31

West Wales and then eventually into Northern Ireland -

0:01:310:01:33

but I think, overall, not a bad day for most of us.

0:01:330:01:35

Then, Wednesday evening,

0:01:350:01:37

that's when that cloud and rain

0:01:370:01:39

will sweep across the UK -

0:01:390:01:40

or, rather than sweeping,

0:01:400:01:42

it will be moving slowly once again.

0:01:420:01:44

So, here's Thursday's weather map.

0:01:440:01:46

Another area of low pressure,

0:01:460:01:47

nowhere near as bad as the one we've just had,

0:01:470:01:50

but it is still a low pressure,

0:01:500:01:52

so, a lot of cloud,

0:01:520:01:53

and some rain linked to it.

0:01:530:01:55

Now, it does look as though the heaviest of the rain

0:01:550:01:57

on Thursday will be moving into south-western parts,

0:01:570:02:00

Wales, probably across northern England,

0:02:000:02:02

it could be quite wet here,

0:02:020:02:03

around the Lake District,

0:02:030:02:05

but it looks as though Scotland, the north, here,

0:02:050:02:07

will be cooler and brighter.

0:02:070:02:09

To the south, more cloud,

0:02:090:02:11

and around 19 degrees Celsius.

0:02:110:02:13

Then, on Friday,

0:02:130:02:14

that messy weather is out of the way.

0:02:140:02:16

You can see it's in the east, here.

0:02:160:02:18

Again, another window of better weather -

0:02:180:02:21

and then another weather front

0:02:210:02:22

is heading our way,

0:02:220:02:23

so, you're getting a sort of theme

0:02:230:02:25

of low pressures coming in going.

0:02:250:02:28

This is Saturday and Sunday,

0:02:280:02:29

and I to just want to paint a picture

0:02:290:02:31

of just this one area of low pressure,

0:02:310:02:33

very close to the UK,

0:02:330:02:34

weather fronts linked to it, as well,

0:02:340:02:36

so, that basically means

0:02:360:02:37

that the weekend's going to be a little on the unsettled side -

0:02:370:02:40

it's certainly not going to be a write-off.

0:02:400:02:41

We are going to get some sunshine, for sure,

0:02:410:02:43

but we just have to be prepared

0:02:430:02:45

for a bit of rain on both days,

0:02:450:02:46

both on Saturday and Sunday.

0:02:460:02:48

Then, early next week,

0:02:480:02:49

that low-pressure that will have affected us

0:02:490:02:51

during the course of the weekend,

0:02:510:02:52

still close by.

0:02:520:02:53

Here's the jet stream.

0:02:530:02:54

We're sort of right within it,

0:02:540:02:56

so, still remnants of the unsettled weather

0:02:560:02:59

early next week,

0:02:590:03:00

and then, middle of next week,

0:03:000:03:03

that jet stream sort of slows down,

0:03:030:03:06

eases, high pressure starts to develop -

0:03:060:03:08

we can say goodbye to the low, there,

0:03:080:03:10

it's out in Scandinavia -

0:03:100:03:11

but more importantly, the high-pressure builds,

0:03:110:03:13

so it does mean that the weather

0:03:130:03:15

is going to be settling down.

0:03:150:03:16

So, next week, as that high-pressure builds,

0:03:160:03:20

lighter winds, more sunshine,

0:03:200:03:22

and starting to turn just that little bit warmer.

0:03:220:03:24

So, I think the future's looking pretty good.
