Another hot day in the city and for some of us, for sure, | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
a little too hot. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:06
Temperatures got up to 33 degrees. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:09
Again, the hottest day of the year, so far, on Monday. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:12
Just west of London - 33 degrees, | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
and this temperature was higher | 0:00:14 | 0:00:16
than the forecast temperatures | 0:00:16 | 0:00:19
for all of these fabulous places. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
In fact, we're beating Acapulco, we are beating Singapore. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:26
The other side of the Atlantic there in Miami, | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
it is not even 30 degrees Celsius. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
So the set-up for the rest of the week, at least across | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
southern areas of the UK, is that heat wafting in from the south. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:37
The jet stream is closer to Northern Ireland and Scotland | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
so here we have the fresher, | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
slightly more unsettled weather | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
and that cooler air will be | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
reaching southern areas but not until a lot later on in the week. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:50
I want to show you the temperatures around midnight into Tuesday. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
Look at these values - 23, 24 degrees | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
across some southern and central parts of the UK. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:58
This is midnight, sun down. | 0:00:58 | 0:01:01
We normally get that during the daytime and these are | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
the already night-time temperatures. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
So it just shows how unusually hot the air is over us. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:10
Of course, a lot more pleasant | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
across Scotland and Northern Ireland. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
One thing that is going to be happening through the course | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
of Monday night into Tuesday, | 0:01:17 | 0:01:18
a very weak cool front will be moving across the UK, | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
moving southwards, | 0:01:21 | 0:01:22
and that means that the slightly fresher air here | 0:01:22 | 0:01:25
in the north will be sinking southwards too, | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
so pushing the heat a little bit further south. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
We're talking about 30 for Cardiff and London, | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
not far off 30 for Plymouth, | 0:01:32 | 0:01:33
whereas these coastal areas in the North Sea, | 0:01:33 | 0:01:36
and also further north, will be a lot fresher. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
Wednesday, we start to see weather fronts moving in, encroaching, | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
so that means some outbreaks of rain possibly even some | 0:01:42 | 0:01:45
thunderstorms around anywhere from Northern Ireland into | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
northern England and Scotland as well. So a much fresher feel. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
Fairly humid, fairly muggy | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
but those temperatures certainly | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
nowhere near as high as those in the south. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
It could even be creeping up over 30 degrees again in the south. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:01
Wednesday is the start of Glastonbury, of course, | 0:02:01 | 0:02:05
but look how quickly those temperatures dip away from 29 | 0:02:05 | 0:02:08
back into the high teens as we go through the course of the week. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
The reason why we are going to be seeing dipping temperatures | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
is because eventually a cool front, you can see it here, | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
moves across the UK. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:16
There is another one heading our way as well but this one, behind it, | 0:02:16 | 0:02:20
those temperatures dip away. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
You can see the teens, still some heat just about ahead of it there | 0:02:22 | 0:02:26
across the south-east and East Anglia on Thursday. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:30
Then Friday, that process continues | 0:02:30 | 0:02:33
so that fresher weather gets in at least for most of us. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
It'll be cloudier, there will be a little bit of rain around | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
but again that extreme south-east may hold on to some of that warmth. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:42
The weekend - looks like low pressure will be very close by. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
It will be sending fresher air | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
and essentially what is going to be happening | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
is that fresher air will be cutting off the supply | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
of that warmth wafting in from the south, | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
drawn in by the high pressure. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:57
Next week, there is not an awful lot of change. | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
It is all about the orientation. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
It looks like the low pressure still brings the fresher air in | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
but that high pressure still is very close and you can see that | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
warm air is very close to the south-east. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
So it just takes a little nudge of these two, | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
a little shift, and that will make all the difference to how warm | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
or how cool it is going to be in different parts of the country. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
But I think overall, next week, it will be fresher for most, | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
there will be some rain around but probably | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
staying on the warm side across southern areas. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:28
Stay cool. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:29 |
