23/06/2017 Weather for the Week Ahead

Hello. While some people will be enjoying the cooler, fresher feel to

our weather, others will surely be asking, will the heat return?

In our forecast for the week ahead, it looks like it won't return

on anything like the scale we had on Wednesday.

Temperatures well up into the 20s,

even into the mid-30s across parts of the south.

Fast forward to Thursday,

a westerly wind brought fresher air across the country and we

shaved a good 10 degrees

of those temperatures in places.

As the change took place,

a few of us had thunderstorms,

many more had quite a quiet day on Thursday but with some extra cloud,

with limited sunshine

and certainly a fresher feel.

That is the way the weather will be through the next few days.

Fresher, quite breezy, some rain at times but not all the time.

There will be some spells of sunshine as well.

The fresher air will be coming from the west, from the Atlantic.

Also coming from the Atlantic,

an area of low pressure which will be bringing

a frontal system southwards and eastwards during the day on Friday.

The front won't be moving very quickly at all.

In fact, it will get rather stuck across parts of northern England,

Wales and the Midlands.

Any heavier bursts of rain really confined to the hills in the west.

Drying up as the day goes on for Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Staying dry all day for many

southern and eastern areas of England.

Temperatures around 16 to 24 degrees.

Our front continues to journey very slowly south-eastwards

during Friday night and for Saturday morning, it is likely

to be sitting across parts of East Anglia and the south-east.

It will take time to clear away, so a grey and quite damp

start to the weekend here.

But as the front clears, things will brighten up a little bit,

some spells of sunshine, often a fair amount of cloud.

A scattering of showers as well on what will be a breezy day.

In fact, quite windy towards the north of Scotland

where there could be gales at times.

And certainly a cool feel to the weather and that cool feel

will continue on into Sunday.

As well, north-westerly winds across the country.

A lot of dry weather at this stage,

just a few showers up towards the north-east.

Now, as we had through Sunday night and into Monday,

this is where some heat could return.

Certainly the chance of some humid air to push in from the south

behind this warm front. Also notice across Iberia, some thunderstorms.

They may come into play in just a moment.

But Monday itself, looks likely to bring a band of rain in from

the west as our area of low pressure wobbles its way in.

A lot of uncertainty about the timing and ahead of it,

that's where we could pull in the warm and humid air.

During Monday night, into Tuesday, don't take this too literally,

but this is where we could see some of those thunderstorms creeping in

across parts of the country.

But no sooner has the humid air arrived,

it is going to be swept away again from the west.

That fresher air does look very likely to return as we get

deeper into next week.

That brief flirtation with something more humid,

will come about because of this dip in the jet stream.

On the southern and eastern side of the jet stream,

we are able to tap in to the warm and humid air

across the near continent.

But as we get deeper into the week,

the jet stream breaks through from the west.

We are on the cool side of the jet, we're into the fresher air and

not only will we be in the fresher air, the jet stream could well

spin up areas of low pressure at times

and move them across the country.

So generally speaking, after what could be

a brief flirtation with something warm at the beginning of the week,

as we get towards the end of the week,

we'll get back to that fresher feel.

Some rain at times, some sunshine as well,

often breezy and that sort of whether will take us right through

the end of June and into the start of July.
