30/06/2017 Weather for the Week Ahead

It's already been a record-breaking wet June

in the south-east of Scotland,

but things can only really get better

as we head towards July.

This was Edinburgh on Thursday,

where the temperature in the rain

and the wind was only 12 degrees.

By contrast, where we did see

a little sunshine

in the south-east corner of England,

Sussex and Kent, temperatures 19,

maybe even as high as 20 degrees

and we should all get a bit warmer over the next few days

and a bit drier, too.

We've still got these swirls of cloud

heading across much of Europe, actually.

This is the heaviest cloud

that's producing the wettest weather

and some storms, too,

nearer that deeper area of low pressure.

Our low pressure is tending to fill a little bit

so the rain is becoming that bit lighter

and that weather front will transfer that rain

south-eastwards across the UK,

having moved northwards over the last few days

so it doesn't really know

whether it's coming or going.

We're left with a lot of cloud

to begin with on Friday.

There'll be some patchy rain

and drizzle here and there.

It's tending to drift towards England and Wales.

Where we get some sunshine

in the south-east and East Anglia,

it should be warmer,

there could be some heavy showers.

It shouldn't be quite as cold for Scotland

and Northern Ireland as it begins to dry out

more and more through the afternoon

and the winds won't be quite as strong, either.

You can see through the evening and overnight,

the wetter weather pushes its way further

into England and Wales.

We'll see some rain in East Anglia

and the south-east this time

and that will push its way towards the near continent,

allowing some clearer skies

to arrive in the north-west

and temperatures will be a bit lower as well,

down to nine or ten degrees here.

The weekend looks quite promising,

at least to begin with.

We'll have early rain in the south-east,

and then England and Wales through the day,

probably dry, a bit warmer

with some sunshine this time,

whereas for Scotland and Northern Ireland,

after a fine start, we'll see this band of rain moving in

on that weather front there.

It's not particularly active, the rain,

not particularly heavy,

but it will transfer

across the whole of the country overnight,

again clearing away

from the south-east corner very quickly

and then a little bump of high pressure

and it's because pressure's a bit higher this weekend

that the prospects look better so a lot of dry weather,

some sunshine,

pleasantly warm in the sunshine,

but a few blustery showers

up towards the north-west of the UK.

And we could see some patchy, showery rain

coming in as we head into Monday as well.

This area of low pressure throwing ahead

some thicker cloud

and a bit of rain and drizzle here and there,

mainly over some of these western hills.

Towards the south-east, it should be drier,

brighter and a bit warmer.

Something a little cooler to the north

of that rain in Scotland

and we're still sort of stuck

with this zone of patchy rain and drizzle

across some of these central parts of the UK

with temperatures mid-teens towards the north

and into the low 20s in the south.

That rain very light and patchy

because it's moving

into this area of high pressure,

but it's a very flabby area of high pressure

and we can't necessarily rely on it.

As we head further into next week,

we're going to find the jet stream strengthening,

a stronger jet

propagating across the Atlantic.

Now, what does that mean?

It means you tend to induce

an area of higher pressure

to the south of the jet

and pick up areas of low pressure on the jet

and they're likely to run

towards the north-west of the UK

with the higher pressure trying

to build in to the south.

Now, into next week,

there will be some rain at times,

but there's more movement to the weather

so there'll be good spells of sunshine as well.

The devil is going to be in the detail.

There's a lot of uncertainty

between different computer models

as we run further ahead.
