02/07/2017 Weather for the Week Ahead

Hi there. This past week hasn't been the warmest of summer weeks,

rather, we've had a lot of heavy rain,

particularly for eastern areas of Scotland, record-breaking

rain even, when we look at the whole of the month of June.

Still, the weekend got off to a decent start

with some sunny spells

and we've got a bit more in the way

of sunshine to come over the next 24 hours as well.

The satellite picture shows weather systems

waiting out in the Atlantic

and a weak front will be pushing its way

southwards as we go on through the early hours

of Sunday across England and Wales

and that could bring with it

a few spots of rain to start the day

across the south of the country.

Otherwise, still brisk winds affecting Scotland

where gale force winds are possible

for the start of the day

across the Northern Isles.

Those winds will ease,

but it'll still stay quite breezy

across western Scotland,

driving in plenty of showers,

some of those could be heavy

and thundery as well.

Elsewhere, cloud will tend to break up

and just like Saturday,

we'll see some sunshine coming through

with temperatures similar

to those of Saturday as well,

highs between 18 and 23 degrees for most.

That's Sunday's weather.

As we go through the night time,

brisk winds will continue to drive the showers in

across the north-west of the UK.

Cloud tends to thicken, then,

through the night across Wales

and south-west England.

Again, the cloud thick enough

for some spots of rain,

turning quite misty and grey here,

some hill fog patches possible too.

But it'll be a relatively mild night

for England and Wales,

some slightly cooler air

across the far north of Scotland.

This is how we start

the new working week, then,

and for most of us it's going to be

quite a quiet weather day.

Cloud coming and going,

sunny spells around,

temperatures near average for the time of year

and a few showers towards the south-west.

The weather will get a little bit

more interesting, though,

as we get on into Tuesday,

because we've got this area of low pressure

that's set to drive its way

in across central areas of the UK,

bringing some pretty wet weather.

Now we could get around 20 to 30 millimetres of rain

from this weather system

as it drives across Northern Ireland,

perhaps the north of Wales, the North Midlands,

southern Scotland and northern England.

That's where the rain's most likely to be.

To the south of this,

dry with some sunny spells in London

and highs of 23,

but looking out in the Atlantic

and the jet stream,

we get what's called a "trough disruption"

happening just to the west of France,

with one area of the jet stream

bending down towards Spain and Iberia

and another one moving well to the north

of the UK around about Iceland.

So that means for us

we actually end up in a pretty slack zone

of weather with very quiet winds.

The weather will become quite slow-moving.

The moisture left over from that weather front

across northern England's still there

on Wednesday, so it's here where we could see

a few showers popping up

as the heat builds during the day.

It could become quite warm, actually,

towards south-east England

as the winds start to back

and bring in some of that warmer air

from the near continent.

That trend, then, continues through Thursday

with temperatures pushing on into the mid-20s,

perhaps even the higher 20s for some.

But we may well start to see

some thunderstorms breaking

out in northern France

and they could drive northwards

on into Friday across the UK.

Now looking ahead to next weekend,

it looks likely that the jet stream

will begin to buckle and bend again,

spreading in some Atlantic air

across the UK, so temperatures

will be coming down, but, that said,

high pressure over France

still could bring some relatively

warm air towards the south-east of England.

So next weekend, bit of a mixed bag, really.

It looks like we could well see a spell of rain,

but there will also be some sunny spells around.

There's a bit of uncertainty about how quickly that cooler,

fresher air gets in,

but I think likely through next weekend

the high temperatures across south-east England

will just begin to ease down somewhat.
