Hello there. For those of you that live in eastern Scotland, I'm sure | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
you're very pleased to see the back of June. | 0:00:04 | 0:00:07
June was not just a wet month - it was a record-breaking month. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:11
In Edinburgh, we had 181 millimetres of rain | 0:00:11 | 0:00:13
fall through the course of June. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
That was the wettest June on record here. Well, that was last month - | 0:00:15 | 0:00:19
what about the next week or so? | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
We can all expect to see some sunny spells over the coming days, | 0:00:21 | 0:00:23
but there will be a spell of rain across central areas | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
coming through on Tuesday. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:27
Then for some of us, it will turn hot and humid later on in the week. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
The pressure chart, then, shows a weak front pushing southwards | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
and eastward on Monday, but it's this area of low pressure that will | 0:00:33 | 0:00:36
bring more substantial rain to central areas of the UK for Tuesday. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:40
Here's how Monday starts off, then. An area of cloud. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:43
Some patchy outbreaks of rain pushing southwards | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
and eastwards, but by the time we get to the afternoon, | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
there'll just be a strip of cloud with one or two showers. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:50
Some of those could be quite sharp but, at the same time, | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
the cloud will break up a bit to allow some sunny spells through. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
Now, to the north of the front, across the Midlands, | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
into Wales, northern counties of England, there will be plenty | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
of sunshine, a brisk north-westerly breeze, but pleasant conditions. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:04
Temperatures into the high teens to low 20s. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
And although there will be some sunshine for a time | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
in Northern Ireland, it will cloud over late in the day. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:11
A much better day weather-wise in Scotland. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
A few showers, yes, in the north-west, | 0:01:14 | 0:01:15
but many areas stay dry with a lot more sunshine to go around. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:19
Now, as we head through Monday evening, | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
we'll start to see that weather system I showed you | 0:01:21 | 0:01:23
arrive across Northern Ireland, bringing some wet weather here. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:26
And then that rain band will drive its way straight | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28
eastwards across southern Scotland, | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
particularly northern England with that rain lasting a long | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
time into Tuesday and, at times, we could see the rain skirting | 0:01:32 | 0:01:35
into the far north of Wales and the far North Midlands, as well. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:39
Either side of the rain band, some decent weather. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
Quite warm towards south-east England with highs of 24 in London, | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
but quite cool and fresh across northern Scotland. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
Now, towards the middle of the week, what happens with the jet stream - | 0:01:47 | 0:01:51
the fast winds six miles up in the earth's atmosphere - | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
is the jet stream splits in two. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:55
We get one portion rotating around this cut-off low that will | 0:01:55 | 0:01:59
drag up some warm and humid air from the near continent, | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
but the northern branch of the jet stream will continue to bring | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
cooler conditions to the far north of Scotland. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
So, from midweek onwards, we're going to start to get some | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
really big temperature contrasts building across the country. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
And although Wednesday will be a largely dry day, | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
there could be one or two sharp showers developing through the day. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
Warmer weather getting into southern counties of England - | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
highs of 26 in London - | 0:02:19 | 0:02:20
but still relatively cool for the north of Scotland. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
Now, that cut-off area of low pressure that | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
I was talking about will form these thundery showers, then, | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
through Wednesday night and into Thursday. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:30
Those thunderstorms will drive their way northwards, | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
so we'll probably see some thundery rain breaking out | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
across parts of England and Wales on Thursday. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
Apart from that, it's going to be a hot and humid day - | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
temperatures in the hottest areas getting into the mid-to-high 20s. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
Wouldn't be surprised if we even hit the 30-degree mark - | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
it could be that hot, given some decent sunshine. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
But then through Thursday evening, Thursday night and Friday, | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
those thunderstorms will continue to track northwards, | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
so we may well see them curling back round to affect eastern | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
parts of Scotland into Friday. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:57
Generally, though, Friday will be a fresher kind of day | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
as Atlantic air continues to move in, | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
although it could still be pretty warm across East Anglia | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
and south-east England, as well. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:06
Now, beyond that, through the weekend and into next week, | 0:03:06 | 0:03:09
it looks like we could see low pressure quite close to | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
the north of the UK bringing breezy conditions and some showers. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:15
Temperatures near normal, | 0:03:15 | 0:03:16
but the Azores high could move into southern parts of the country | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19
and that could bring more settled conditions, lighter winds, | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
more sunshine and potentially things getting a bit warmer. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:25
So temperatures, if you like, returning a bit closer to normal, | 0:03:25 | 0:03:27
but could become quite warm in the south. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29 |
