Hello there. Our weather is in the process of changing. | 0:00:03 | 0:00:06
Already that change has brought something quite dramatic in places. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:10
Some thunderstorms creeping up from the south. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:13
Tuesday started off innocuously enough | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
with blue skies for our Weather Watcher | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
there in Falkirk, | 0:00:17 | 0:00:18
but look at the cloud that turned up in Plymouth. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
See the undulating pattern in this cloud structure? | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
That shows you just how unstable the atmosphere became. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:28
Those storm clouds eventually delivered | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
some thunder, some lightning, | 0:00:30 | 0:00:32
and a lot of rain in places. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
During Wednesday, this little weather front here | 0:00:34 | 0:00:37
is going to continue to bring some thundery downpours | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
northwards across the country. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:41
This cold front out west | 0:00:41 | 0:00:42
will eventually complete the change, if you like, | 0:00:42 | 0:00:45
and leave us all with some fresher air. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
But we're still going through that transition | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
during the day on Wednesday. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
Quite a messy day, | 0:00:52 | 0:00:53
bands of thundery downpours | 0:00:53 | 0:00:54
pushing across the country. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
Eastern areas still very warm, quite humid - | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
30, 31, maybe 32 degrees across East Anglia. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:03
More cloud, though, for western parts | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
of England, for Wales. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:06
Could see some further thunderstorms | 0:01:06 | 0:01:07
turning up in North Wales, | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
maybe eventually northwest England | 0:01:09 | 0:01:10
through the afternoon. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:11
A scattering of showers and thunderstorms | 0:01:11 | 0:01:13
across Scotland, | 0:01:13 | 0:01:14
and for Northern Ireland we'll see | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
increasingly wet conditions | 0:01:16 | 0:01:17
spreading from the west. Again, there could be | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
some thunder and lightning mixed in. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
But this rain is associated with that cold front | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
that I showed you a moment ago. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
As these rain bands work quite erratically | 0:01:26 | 0:01:29
eastwards during Wednesday night and Thursday, | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
eventually we will allow that fresher air | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
to sweep its way in from the west. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
Actually, a lot of dry weather around on Thursday, | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
but look at the temperatures. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
Way down on where they have been. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:42
17 in Glasgow, | 0:01:42 | 0:01:43
perhaps still up to 22 degrees there in London. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:47
Through Thursday night into Friday, | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
it looks like we're going to spin up this little area | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
of low pressure and bring it in | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
across the British Isles. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
Quite an unsettled look to the weather, I have to say. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
We'll see this band of rain working its way through. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
Some of that rain could be on the heavy side, | 0:02:00 | 0:02:01
blustery winds with that. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
Even once the rain band has cleared, some sunshine, yes, | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
but also some showers pushing into the northwest. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:08
16-21 degrees. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:10
Low pressure stays with us | 0:02:10 | 0:02:11
into the start of the weekend. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
Just pivoting around on top of the British Isles, | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
so there'll be further showers | 0:02:17 | 0:02:18
through the day on Saturday. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
Some spells of sunshine as well. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
But those temperatures - | 0:02:22 | 0:02:23
get used to values like these - | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
15 to 21 degrees. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:27
Now for the end of the weekend, | 0:02:27 | 0:02:28
low pressure essentially stays in charge. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
It drifts a little bit further eastwards | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
and allows high pressure | 0:02:33 | 0:02:34
to try to build its way in from the west. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
High pressure would of course change things | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
back to a more settled weather set-up. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
So is that going to happen? | 0:02:42 | 0:02:43
Well, yesterday I showed you the jet stream. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
I showed you this bend in the jet stream. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
The jet stream bending its way northwards. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
This is where the high pressure sits, to the south of the jet. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
If this bend worked its way in across the British Isles, | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
it would allow the high pressure to build its way in. | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
But actually, through next week, | 0:03:00 | 0:03:01
it doesn't look like that's going to happen. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
It looks like the jet stream will stay, essentially, | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
right across the country. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
That will keep us very close to areas of low pressure. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
On balance, it looks most likely | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
that low pressure will remain the dominant feature. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
So what does that mean next week? | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
Well, it means some spells of rain, some drier intervals as well. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:21
That high pressure not too far away. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:23
Fairly cool and often fairly breezy. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
So how will our weather change next? | 0:03:26 | 0:03:29
Well, join me at this time tomorrow. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:30 |
