26/07/2017 Weather for the Week Ahead

Hello there. I've seen the weather charts for the next ten days,

and if you're after something dry, warm, settled,

you might want to head into Southern Europe.

For us, things very, very changeable.

Probably the highest temperatures we'll see

were through the first part of the week.

On Tuesday we saw temperatures reach 25, 26 degrees

across Shropshire and Herefordshire.

Bit of sunshine around for most.

And while we will see sunshine on Wednesday,

rain will start to become a little bit more of a player.

Wet and windy weather, too, driven in by this area of low pressure

which will dominate the charts for the rest of the week.

The first punch from it are these weather fronts

which brings a wet start to Wednesday

across much of Ireland, Western Scotland, western England and Wales.

Particularly heavy bursts of rain on the northern flank of that system.

Strong and gusty winds, too. Bright start through eastern England,

cloud and occasional lighter, patchier rain

pushes here through the afternoon.

But if you really want to get something done,

in the west, hold fire.

Take a lazy breakfast, enjoy it, and then get out into the afternoon.

Sunny spells for many, a few showers in Western Scotland

and Northern Ireland. But temperatures down -

at best high teens, low 20s.

There's low pressure through the night

to take us into Thursday.

Strongest wind will be in Western Scotland, Northern Ireland -

close to that low pressure, the showers most frequent.

Northern Ireland and Scotland could see some thunderstorms with it.

England and Wales starts off on fresh but dry and bright note.

The shower clouds will bubble up, they'll push through in the breeze.

Some of you will avoid them but if you see them it'll feel a bit cool.

Temperatures down on what it should be for the time of year,

mid to high teens at the very best for many of you.

There's little change through Thursday night into Friday.

That low pressure is stuck. It's just revolving around

like an old sock in a washing machine,

still throwing in the showers across

parts of Western Scotland and Northern Ireland in particular.

Occasional showers for England and Wales.

We're at the time of year, of course, strong sun overhead,

some of you will avoid the showers.

Showers may only form a small portion of your day.

But later on, there is something

a bit more sinister down towards the south-west.

This is an area of low pressure which brought some pretty wet

conditions across Washington, the eastern US, though last weekend.

Friday night into Saturday morning,

some very lively bursts of rain to go with it,

but it does clear out the way, it looks like, for daytime,

so it's basically what you're seeing on Friday.

Sunshine, showers most frequent in Scotland and Northern Ireland,

few showers for England and Wales, bit more sunshine,

but temperatures nothing really to shout about.

Through Saturday night into Sunday, though,

our low pressure is joined by another cousin,

works its way in, which may merge the showers into

longer spells of rain for Northern Ireland and also across Scotland.

It will drag in milder air for England and Wales eventually.

A bit more cloud in the west, brighter in the east.

Just have to watch the potential weather system

through the English Channel

which will maybe produce heavier rain later in the day.

Overall, the story for the weekend summed up in one picture -

sunshine, showers, a good few rainbows around, I think, for many.

As we go into the following week, little changes.

If you take a look at the jet stream picture,

it's quite a strong jet stream

which dives to the south of the UK through the Bay of Biscay.

We're always north of it, so always in the cooler air.

With it as well we'll see areas of low pressure,

generally to the west of the country.

It will bring some brief glimpses of warmth potentially next week,

but it's going to be that changeable pattern we've seen this week.

We'll see a bit of sunshine,

there'll be some spells of wet and windy weather

particularly to the north and west,

but overall, temperatures, certainly in the wetter times,

will be on the cool side rather than above average.
