Hello. By this time next week our weather should look a little bit | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
more like we'd expect in August, with the wettest conditions | 0:00:04 | 0:00:07
in the north and drier weather further south. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
Which will be a big flip in our fortunes compared with what | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
we had on Wednesday this week. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
Southern areas very, very soggy and the further north you looked, | 0:00:14 | 0:00:18
the brighter the skies became, | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
particularly across northern Scotland where there was | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
a lot of sunshine as we went on through the day. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
The satellite and radar picture confirms that - | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
largely sunny skies across northern Scotland, | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
more cloud further south, | 0:00:30 | 0:00:32
although things brightened up for Northern Ireland, | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
northwest England, | 0:00:34 | 0:00:35
and you can see down to the south there was a lot of rain, | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
some heavy bursts of rain. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
But that pattern begins to change during Thursday | 0:00:40 | 0:00:43
because, as this area of low pressure drifts across | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
the country, it's closest to the centre of the low, | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
ie in the north, where we'll see most of the showers, | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
these showers slow-moving, heavy, with some rumbles of | 0:00:51 | 0:00:55
thunder, particularly for Scotland, the far north of England | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57
and Northern Ireland. Further south, not as many showers | 0:00:57 | 0:01:00
and the wind will be stronger, so if you do catch a shower | 0:01:00 | 0:01:04
it should blow through quite quickly to reveal sunny spells. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:08
Temperatures 18-22 degrees. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:11
So, low pressure still in charge as we move out of Thursday | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
into Friday. The low drifting up to the northeast | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
and again it's closest to the centre of the low | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
where we'll see most of the showers, particularly across Scotland. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22
Some into Northern Ireland, northern England, | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
down into the Midlands, but generally | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
the further south you are, fewer showers, more sunshine. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28
Lighter winds at this stage. 16 in Glasgow, | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
23 in London. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
The thing we would need to really settle things down | 0:01:33 | 0:01:36
is high pressure. And that is sitting a long way out | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
to the west, but as we go into the start of the weekend | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
the bulge in the isobars here, this area of high pressure, | 0:01:41 | 0:01:45
does begin to take a bit more control of our weather, | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
particularly in the south. Here a fair amount of dry | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
weather through the day on Saturday, still a fair few showers | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
up towards the north and northwest. As we move on in to Sunday, | 0:01:54 | 0:01:58
it looks briefly like this area of high pressure | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
might be winning the battle. It might be settling things | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
down properly but it isn't going to win because this area of | 0:02:03 | 0:02:07
low pressure will start to move its way in from the Atlantic, | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
so, yes, a spell of fine weather on Sunday after what could be | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
quite a cool start in places. And as we go on through the day | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
we will then see some outbreaks of rain pushing in across | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
Northern Ireland. That rain is expected to move | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
erratically eastwards as we go on through Monday. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
Still a fair of amount of dry weather down to the southeast | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
and temperatures 16-20 degrees. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
So let's catch up on the progress of our area of high pressure | 0:02:30 | 0:02:33
as we move out of Monday into Tuesday. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:36
Still sitting down here to the southwest. This area of | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
high pressure is essentially contained in | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
a ridge in the jet stream. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:43
The jet stream is what drives the | 0:02:43 | 0:02:45
weather systems around the world | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
and the jet stream bending way up | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
to the north as our area of | 0:02:49 | 0:02:50
high pressure sits in place. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
The weather systems will be | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
deflected away to the north | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
and as this bend in the jet stream | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
builds its way in from the middle | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
part of next week, it is likely | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
that more of us will see the | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
influence of this area | 0:03:04 | 0:03:05
of high pressure. The big question | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
is how far north that high will | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
take control, and it still looks | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
like northern parts of the country | 0:03:11 | 0:03:13
could be affected by areas of | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
low pressure. So it's likely to be | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
dry with some sunshine in the south, | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
some rain at times in northern parts | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
of the country, a little warmer | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
but no heat wave. But in southern | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
areas at least, something a little | 0:03:26 | 0:03:27
more settled on the way. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29 |
