Hello, we've changed the month but we haven't changed the weather.

0:00:020:00:05

Tuesday was another day of intense downpours for some of us.

0:00:050:00:07

But given that we have changed the month,

0:00:070:00:09

let's take this opportunity to look back at some of July's highs and

0:00:090:00:12

lows up to 29th, the provisional figures from the Met Office.

0:00:120:00:15

We'll start with rainfall, for the UK as a whole

0:00:150:00:17

wetter than normal but where you are in the blue and particularly

0:00:170:00:19

the darker blues, you have been most wet compared with average,

0:00:190:00:22

parts of southern England,

0:00:220:00:24

Northern Ireland and south-west Scotland.

0:00:240:00:26

Now, in terms of temperature, for the UK really close to average

0:00:260:00:28

but as well as being wetter than normal,

0:00:280:00:30

parts of the south of the UK were warmer than average for July,

0:00:300:00:33

parts of Scotland were cooler than average.

0:00:330:00:35

Now, we don't always show you the sunshine, but there is a

0:00:350:00:38

reason for this, there is a nugget of interest in this.

0:00:380:00:40

In the yellows and oranges, more sunshine than average,

0:00:400:00:42

and especially into the Northern Isles,

0:00:420:00:44

and into Shetland, where Shetland was sunnier than Cornwall in July.

0:00:440:00:47

That's only happened on a handful of occasions before

0:00:470:00:50

on the weather records.

0:00:500:00:52

And we've changed the month, but we haven't changed the weather.

0:00:520:00:54

There's your Tuesday's sunshine from Shetland

0:00:540:00:57

and this is your cloud in Cornwall, not just cloud, this

0:00:570:00:59

is a funnel cloud, a tornado, not quite touching the ground.

0:00:590:01:02

Such was the turbulent nature

0:01:020:01:04

of Tuesday's weather on the first day of the month.

0:01:040:01:07

And Wednesday, still the same pattern, the day starts wet and

0:01:070:01:09

windy in Cornwall, we'll have some sunny spells in the Northern Isles.

0:01:090:01:13

Now, low pressure moving in on Wednesday,

0:01:130:01:16

and that means some wet,

0:01:160:01:17

windy weather spreading its way north-eastwards across the UK,

0:01:170:01:19

near gales around some of these south-western coasts.

0:01:190:01:22

Heavier bursts running eastwards across southern England,

0:01:220:01:24

but not reaching the far north and north-east of Scotland until we

0:01:240:01:27

get into the evening, temperatures just around 17 to 20 Celsius.

0:01:270:01:30

Now, the rain does finally reach into the Northern Isles

0:01:300:01:33

as we go through Wednesday night,

0:01:330:01:35

low-pressure edging across Scotland on its southern

0:01:350:01:37

flank on Thursday, really quite a blustery day, so quite brisk winds.

0:01:370:01:41

Showers most frequent

0:01:410:01:43

in northern England, Northern Ireland and Scotland,

0:01:430:01:45

some heavy, thundery, risk of hail, not too many for the

0:01:450:01:47

rest of England and Wales, though

0:01:470:01:49

again it will be windy - but sunny spells.

0:01:490:01:51

Low pressure only very slowly moving eastwards on Friday

0:01:510:01:54

but around it dragging a more

0:01:540:01:56

north-westerly component to our wind.

0:01:560:01:58

So if anything, even cooler on Friday,

0:01:580:02:01

with further showers particularly towards north-western parts,

0:02:010:02:03

not too many in the south and east.

0:02:030:02:05

But for some of us just into the mid-teens and that rather

0:02:050:02:08

cool weather pattern, breezy too, continues into the start of the

0:02:080:02:11

weekend, that low only at this

0:02:110:02:13

stage finally reaching into Scandinavia.

0:02:130:02:15

So, breezy on Saturday, most of the showers affecting

0:02:150:02:18

north-western areas, not too many to the south and east,

0:02:180:02:21

some sunny spells but nowhere particularly warm.

0:02:210:02:24

A ridge of high pressure coming in for part two of the weekend,

0:02:240:02:26

on Sunday, but you can see another weather system to the west,

0:02:260:02:29

poised to move in.

0:02:290:02:31

And as we look at the jet stream, towards the end of Sunday

0:02:310:02:34

and into the start of next week,

0:02:340:02:35

we talked about the southern track

0:02:350:02:37

of it keeping us unsettled yesterday

0:02:370:02:40

and so, yeah, here it is, still in that

0:02:400:02:41

southern flow here, with low pressure moving through.

0:02:410:02:44

But hold on a minute, what did we just pass in the mid-Atlantic?

0:02:440:02:47

A bulge here, it looks like the jet stream taking a more

0:02:470:02:49

wavy pattern in the Atlantic,

0:02:490:02:51

encouraged to some degree by the remnants of

0:02:510:02:54

tropical storm Emily coming out of the USA.

0:02:540:02:56

And so we will find with that more wavy pattern, we're more

0:02:560:02:59

inclined to see high pressure moving in for a time next week.

0:02:590:03:02

We're more confident now that that is going to happen and settle things

0:03:020:03:05

down for many of us, how long though is still open to question

0:03:050:03:08

and it could well be that we, still around the northern

0:03:080:03:11

edge of the high pressure, get weather systems brushing Scotland

0:03:110:03:14

and it could well be we get

0:03:140:03:15

something more typical for the time of year,

0:03:150:03:18

cloudy skies and wet at times in the Northern Isles,

0:03:180:03:20

whereas Cornwall sees a bit of sunshine.

0:03:200:03:22

How long the high pressure will stick around, though,

0:03:220:03:24

is certainly something we are going to be looking at in the coming

0:03:240:03:27

days on Weather For The Week ahead.
