As we step into the first day of meteorological autumn,

0:00:020:00:04

let's take a look back at Summer 2017.

0:00:040:00:07

The provisional statistics show it's been rather a mixed sort of summer.

0:00:070:00:11

Back in June, we saw the hottest June day in over 40 years,

0:00:110:00:15

in fact, lots of fairly hot

0:00:150:00:16

and largely dry weather for many parts of the country during June

0:00:160:00:20

and into the first part of July, too, but then things turned much

0:00:200:00:23

more unsettled during the second half of July -

0:00:230:00:26

wetter than average, and flash flooding,

0:00:260:00:28

particularly in Cornwall, where we

0:00:280:00:30

saw 105 millimetres of rain in just three hours.

0:00:300:00:33

But despite that unsettled theme,

0:00:330:00:35

we ended the summer on a very hot and sunny note with

0:00:350:00:37

one of the hottest August Bank Holidays on record.

0:00:370:00:40

So, how does the first day of autumn look?

0:00:400:00:42

Well, we're likely to start off on a largely dry note on Friday

0:00:420:00:45

with some sunshine.

0:00:450:00:47

Through the day, we'll start to see showers building,

0:00:470:00:49

but they'll be fewer and further between compared to Thursday.

0:00:490:00:52

Eastern parts of England and eastern Scotland

0:00:520:00:54

bearing the brunt of the showery weather.

0:00:540:00:56

21 degrees or so in the sunshine towards the south,

0:00:560:00:59

typically the high teens further north.

0:00:590:01:01

And then those showers ease away through Friday evening

0:01:010:01:03

and overnight into Saturday as higher pressure squeezes in.

0:01:030:01:07

So that's good news to start off your weekend. Although it will be

0:01:070:01:09

quite fresh first thing this Saturday morning,

0:01:090:01:12

we should see some sunshine from the word go.

0:01:120:01:14

And we've got this area of high pressure

0:01:140:01:16

nudging in from the south, and that is going to keep most places

0:01:160:01:20

dry and bright through the day, with light winds, too.

0:01:200:01:22

So Saturday is shaping up to be the better day of the weekend -

0:01:220:01:25

sunshine, a bit of cumulus cloud building up during the afternoon.

0:01:250:01:29

Waiting in the wings we've got this rain you can see,

0:01:290:01:32

and that's going to be more of a player by the time we get to

0:01:320:01:34

Sunday, but for Saturday it will feel pretty pleasant,

0:01:340:01:37

with those temperatures for most of us between around 17 to 21 degrees.

0:01:370:01:42

Then it changes into Saturday night

0:01:420:01:44

and Sunday as this frontal system approaches from the west.

0:01:440:01:47

Some fairly tight isobars, so a spell of wet and windy weather

0:01:470:01:51

on Sunday, initially across Northern Ireland, Wales,

0:01:510:01:54

the south-west of England, with heavy rain,

0:01:540:01:55

nudging its way eastwards through the day,

0:01:550:01:58

but I think the far east could well get away with a largely dry

0:01:580:02:01

story before that rain arrives later on.

0:02:010:02:04

And temperatures are, well, around 16 to 19 degrees,

0:02:040:02:07

feeling cooler with the wind and the outbreaks of rain.

0:02:070:02:10

Now, this frontal system tends to ease as

0:02:100:02:12

we head through into the new working week,

0:02:120:02:14

so that rainfall just dying away through the day on Monday.

0:02:140:02:17

But I think Monday's quite a cloudy sort of picture,

0:02:170:02:20

and you could see the odd remnants of some wet weather.

0:02:200:02:22

Some brighter weather across eastern parts of the UK again, and with

0:02:220:02:26

a bit more of a southerly influence,

0:02:260:02:27

temperatures up to around 22 degrees or so,

0:02:270:02:30

certainly milder overnight through into the middle part of the week.

0:02:300:02:33

So, for Tuesday, the next band of rain arrives from the Atlantic,

0:02:330:02:37

bringing another spell of wet weather from west to east,

0:02:370:02:40

but temperatures still up to around 22 degrees.

0:02:400:02:43

Now, low pressure stays fairly close by as we move through

0:02:430:02:46

the middle of the week, out towards the west, I think, by the

0:02:460:02:49

time we get to Wednesday, drawing in those winds from the Atlantic.

0:02:490:02:52

So a westerly influence to our weather through

0:02:520:02:55

the course of next week, bringing spells of rain at times,

0:02:550:02:58

interspersed with some sunshine and some scattered showers, too.

0:02:580:03:02

Now, most of the rain

0:03:020:03:03

and the windier conditions are more likely to be across western and

0:03:030:03:06

north-western parts of the country, particularly later in the week.

0:03:060:03:09

Further south-east, you're likely to say a bit drier, a bit warmer,

0:03:090:03:13

with lighter winds, too.

0:03:130:03:14

So as we head through into the start of autumn,

0:03:140:03:17

meteorologically speaking, fairly unsettled.

0:03:170:03:19

There'll be spells of rain at times,

0:03:190:03:21

often quite windy towards the north and the west,

0:03:210:03:24

and you're more likely to stay drier

0:03:240:03:25

and warmer in the south-east. Bye for now.
