As we step into the first day of meteorological autumn, | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
let's take a look back at Summer 2017. | 0:00:04 | 0:00:07
The provisional statistics show it's been rather a mixed sort of summer. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:11
Back in June, we saw the hottest June day in over 40 years, | 0:00:11 | 0:00:15
in fact, lots of fairly hot | 0:00:15 | 0:00:16
and largely dry weather for many parts of the country during June | 0:00:16 | 0:00:20
and into the first part of July, too, but then things turned much | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
more unsettled during the second half of July - | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
wetter than average, and flash flooding, | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
particularly in Cornwall, where we | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
saw 105 millimetres of rain in just three hours. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
But despite that unsettled theme, | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
we ended the summer on a very hot and sunny note with | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
one of the hottest August Bank Holidays on record. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
So, how does the first day of autumn look? | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
Well, we're likely to start off on a largely dry note on Friday | 0:00:42 | 0:00:45
with some sunshine. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
Through the day, we'll start to see showers building, | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
but they'll be fewer and further between compared to Thursday. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:52
Eastern parts of England and eastern Scotland | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
bearing the brunt of the showery weather. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
21 degrees or so in the sunshine towards the south, | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
typically the high teens further north. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
And then those showers ease away through Friday evening | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
and overnight into Saturday as higher pressure squeezes in. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:07
So that's good news to start off your weekend. Although it will be | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
quite fresh first thing this Saturday morning, | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
we should see some sunshine from the word go. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
And we've got this area of high pressure | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
nudging in from the south, and that is going to keep most places | 0:01:16 | 0:01:20
dry and bright through the day, with light winds, too. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
So Saturday is shaping up to be the better day of the weekend - | 0:01:22 | 0:01:25
sunshine, a bit of cumulus cloud building up during the afternoon. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:29
Waiting in the wings we've got this rain you can see, | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
and that's going to be more of a player by the time we get to | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
Sunday, but for Saturday it will feel pretty pleasant, | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
with those temperatures for most of us between around 17 to 21 degrees. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:42
Then it changes into Saturday night | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
and Sunday as this frontal system approaches from the west. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
Some fairly tight isobars, so a spell of wet and windy weather | 0:01:47 | 0:01:51
on Sunday, initially across Northern Ireland, Wales, | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
the south-west of England, with heavy rain, | 0:01:54 | 0:01:55
nudging its way eastwards through the day, | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
but I think the far east could well get away with a largely dry | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
story before that rain arrives later on. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
And temperatures are, well, around 16 to 19 degrees, | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
feeling cooler with the wind and the outbreaks of rain. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
Now, this frontal system tends to ease as | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
we head through into the new working week, | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
so that rainfall just dying away through the day on Monday. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
But I think Monday's quite a cloudy sort of picture, | 0:02:17 | 0:02:20
and you could see the odd remnants of some wet weather. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
Some brighter weather across eastern parts of the UK again, and with | 0:02:22 | 0:02:26
a bit more of a southerly influence, | 0:02:26 | 0:02:27
temperatures up to around 22 degrees or so, | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
certainly milder overnight through into the middle part of the week. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:33
So, for Tuesday, the next band of rain arrives from the Atlantic, | 0:02:33 | 0:02:37
bringing another spell of wet weather from west to east, | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
but temperatures still up to around 22 degrees. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
Now, low pressure stays fairly close by as we move through | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
the middle of the week, out towards the west, I think, by the | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
time we get to Wednesday, drawing in those winds from the Atlantic. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
So a westerly influence to our weather through | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
the course of next week, bringing spells of rain at times, | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
interspersed with some sunshine and some scattered showers, too. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:02
Now, most of the rain | 0:03:02 | 0:03:03
and the windier conditions are more likely to be across western and | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
north-western parts of the country, particularly later in the week. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:09
Further south-east, you're likely to say a bit drier, a bit warmer, | 0:03:09 | 0:03:13
with lighter winds, too. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:14
So as we head through into the start of autumn, | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
meteorologically speaking, fairly unsettled. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
There'll be spells of rain at times, | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
often quite windy towards the north and the west, | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
and you're more likely to stay drier | 0:03:24 | 0:03:25
and warmer in the south-east. Bye for now. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28 |
