Hello there. It's certainly turning into a weekend of two halves, | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
so I hope you made the most of the fine weather | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
that we had on Saturday. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
In early September the land is still warmer than the sea | 0:00:08 | 0:00:12
which is why we saw the cloud bubbling up | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
over land and coastal areas were lovely and sunny | 0:00:14 | 0:00:17
and there were just sufficient depth to the cloud | 0:00:17 | 0:00:20
across Suffolk and Norfolk to give us one or two showers on Saturday. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:25
Those are clearing away | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
and instead the major changes coming in from the Atlantic. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:29
The cloud has been thickening up and these weather fronts | 0:00:29 | 0:00:32
will push rain very slowly eastwards | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
into the UK for the second half of the weekend. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:37
There'll still be some hazy sunshine for a while in eastern Scotland | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
and eastern England and it may well | 0:00:39 | 0:00:41
be dry for most of the day because | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
this rain is quite slowly pushing its way eastwards. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:47
Initially some heavy bursts of rain on the hills in the west. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
The rain becomes more drizzly and lighter through the day | 0:00:49 | 0:00:52
but a lot of low cloud and it will be quite poor for western areas. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
Less so near the east coast | 0:00:55 | 0:00:56
where we have the best of the weather. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
Even here through the evening and overnight | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
we may see a little bit of rain cropping up | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
but the tendency is for the rain to just peter out overnight. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:06
We're left with a lot of low cloud, hill fog, | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
and some warm air to start the new week. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
That weather front, then, moving into the UK | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
peters out, weakens. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
The next one has a bit more oomph to it | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
and that's pushing into the back of that first one | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
and it will bring a spell of heavier rain perhaps to Northern Ireland, | 0:01:20 | 0:01:24
more particularly into Scotland. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
Ahead of that, to the south across England and Wales, | 0:01:26 | 0:01:29
still cloudy still a bit damp out there as well | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
but we've got some warm air actually. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
A bit of tropical air in the mix for Monday | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
so despite all of that cloudy, damp weather | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
we still could find temperatures into 22 | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
or 23 degrees territory. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:42
On that weather front, though, | 0:01:42 | 0:01:43
there is potential for a wave developing which | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
will stall the progress and could bring a spell of | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
heavy rain across the UK on Monday night. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
The worst of that rain clearing out into the North Sea. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
The hang back of rain and cloud into the south-east for a while. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
Then things brighten up. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
We get some sunshine and there will be | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
a few showers in the north-west. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
So some muggy air for a while towards the south-east, | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
but fresher air is coming in | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
from the west behind that weather front, | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
which does finally clear away. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
Then we get this sort of attempt at | 0:02:11 | 0:02:12
a bump of high pressure overnight | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
so probably a touch cooler, I think, | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
by the time we get to Wednesday morning. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
There'll be some sunshine around. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:19
Still got a westerly breeze, mind you. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
Strongest up towards the north-west | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
and this is where we are more likely to see some showers, | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
perhaps some longer spells of rain. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
If we don't get the longer spells of rain on Wednesday | 0:02:28 | 0:02:30
it looks like we'll get it in the north-west on Thursday | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
as these weather fronts approach due to that area of low pressure. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
And that sets us up really towards the latter part of the week. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
Jet stream roughly in this position | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
and not as far south as it was | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
over the summer but still close to the UK, | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
picking up areas of low pressure, | 0:02:44 | 0:02:46
driving them across the northern half of the country. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
Further south, the Azores High tries to come in | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
to southern areas from time to time | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
and we're left, by the time we get into next weekend, | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
with some very mixed weather | 0:02:56 | 0:02:57
across the north-west of the UK. | 0:02:57 | 0:02:59
Closer to low pressure, | 0:02:59 | 0:03:01
could be quite wet and windy for a while. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
Higher pressure more towards the south and south-east. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
Here next weekend | 0:03:05 | 0:03:06
potentially something a bit drier | 0:03:06 | 0:03:09
and a little bit warmer as well. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
But on the whole, | 0:03:11 | 0:03:12
the outlook as we go further into September is very mixed. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
We'll find that strong jet stream pushing in some spells of rain. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:19
There'll be some drier and brighter interludes | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
in between but may not feel that warm actually, | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
particularly in the north, | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
where the winds will be stronger. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28 |
