05/09/2017 Weather for the Week Ahead

Hello. Meteorologically speaking the beginning of September is

the beginning of Autumn

but it didn't feel like that for some of us on Monday.

Despite a lot of cloud around we had highs of 24 degrees,

75 Fahrenheit, in parts of the West Midlands,

with some glimpses of sunshine.

I hope you made the most of it.

It's all set to change.

In actual fact on Monday across the far north-east in Edinburgh

we had some heavy rain.

This frontal system is going to continue to bring some rain and it

will push that humid air back to the near continent, feeling much

fresher, really, from Tuesday into Wednesday.

And so on Tuesday we will see some rain, some of it heavy

for a time across Wales and parts of northern England and Scotland.

That will gradually drift its way east and weaken off.

A little bit of brightness and so we could see yet again more

warmth in the south-east with 21 or 22 degrees.

But already fresher conditions further north and west,

but at least you will get some sunshine.

Those fronts will continue to sweep their way south and east

and then really introduce the fresher air for all for the

beginning of Wednesday morning.

It will be a noticeable difference to the feel first

thing on Wednesday.

Low double digits across towns and city centres,

perhaps single figures in rural parts.

There will be plenty of isobars on the chart on Wednesday.

That means it's going to be a pretty breezy affair.

A lot of cloud and the wind coming in from a western direction.

So always feeding more cloud along west-facing coasts.

The best of any brightness in sheltered eastern areas but

with that wind direction we could see a few scattered showers as well.

But a relatively quiet day to come on Wednesday.

Highest values around 14 to 19 degrees.

As we move out of Wednesday into Thursday we've got to look

to this area of low pressure moving in from the Atlantic.

That's going to bring increasingly strengthening winds

and more unsettled weather through Northern Ireland, and in

particular north-west Scotland, but eventually towards Scotland.

England and Wales on Thursday should stay predominantly dry,

a little bit more in the way of cloud around perhaps.

And again not quite as warm as it has been.

13 to 20 degrees the overall high.

But as we move out of Thursday into Friday we're going to see

some rain, pretty much for all of us at some point,

and some of that will turn quite heavy. With plenty of isobars again,

across the chart

the winds will start to become quite a significant feature.

So some heavy rain moving its way through England and Wales.

Circulating around that low we're going to see strong

winds driving in plenty of showers.

13 to 18 degrees the overall high.

And that area of low pressure will really dictate the early

half of the weekend as well.

It stays pretty windy at times

and there will be some significant showers to come.

Most of the showers chiefly to the north and west.

Sheltered eastern areas perhaps

seeing the best of any drier weather.

But it's going to feel disappointing for the early half of September.

13 to 19 degrees the high.

For the longer term period we have to look towards the

jet stream which is going to be sitting to the south of the UK.

Quite unusually south for this time of year.

And that is going to allow the areas of low pressure to

generate in the Atlantic and push down across the UK.

So as we're to the north side of the jet stream we're always going to

be on the cooler side and it's going to stay pretty unsettled.

So you know what I'm going to say. For the longer

eight to ten day period, it looks likely to stay wet and windy.

We will see some brighter interludes,

but for you it may not be

Autumn yet, but I tell you what,

it is certainly going to feel like it as

we move through the weekend and into the early half of next week.
