23/11/2017 Weather for the Week Ahead

In the longer term it looks like the weather pattern is going to

be settling down but it may well be quite a cold theme.

Wednesday was a day of extremes. Just look at this picture.

The result of about 100mm of rain

falling in the hills.

Flood waters here, waters

of a different kind in East Sussex.

Where with a southerly wind

and some sunshine we had temperatures of 15 or so.

By Thursday it's cold air that's causing

problems across northern Scotland with some snow.

Not just over the hills.

The worst of that clears away in the morning but wintry showers continue

in Scotland, Northern Ireland, a few coming into northern England.

Most of the showers across the northern half of the UK where

it's going to be cold. And not just in Scotland.

Further south those numbers not

as high as they were on Wednesday

but it should be largely dry with some sunshine.

We could see a little rain running in across southernmost

parts of England overnight.

Not quite sure how far north that's going to get.

Shouldn't amount to much,

for many those showers in the north-west continue to be

wintry, especially in the hills and

with lighter winds and clearer skies

anywhere from north Wales northwards may have a frost in the countryside.

So a colder start to Friday.

Not as windy by Friday.

Some sunshine around, wintry showers,

particularly in the north-west

of Scotland into Northern Ireland.

A few rain showers across southern England

and Wales where there's a bit more cloud.

Temperatures are lower,

8 or 9 and the numbers even lower further north.

It's colder air that's arriving once again for the weekend.

That's been a pattern we've seen over a good few weeks.

It's going to feel chilly this weekend,

especially when the winds pick up.

And you can see the isobars on the chart there around that

area of high pressure.

Everything coming in from the north or north-west on Saturday.

And more isobars on the chart as well.

So we will find stronger winds across the UK blowing

in some showers.

Again, the showers more likely across the north and west.

Likely to have a mixture of rain, sleet

and even some snow especially over the hills.

There will be some sunshine around as well and probably a bit

more sunshine for some central and eastern areas for a while on Sunday.

The heavier showers tending to move away.

Bit more cloud coming in from the Atlantic.

Signs of change perhaps but it is another cold day for many on Sunday.

Perhaps chilly in the evening too.

The winds start to pick up again briefly,

we're just going to get some Atlantic influence.

Things are moving very quickly.

Warm front, not much on it.

Cold front, different story.

This rain can be quite heavy and it will be accompanied by some

gusty winds that will drive that rain eastwards.

Showers and colder air returning into Scotland,

northern England and Northern Ireland as well.

After that rain that moves through fairly quickly we're

back into something more from the north or north-west.

So back into sunshine

and some showers that could be of a wintry flavour.

As we head further into next week we're going to be

shaped by an area of high pressure,

perhaps not quite as round as this

but in that sort of position.

We may get some Atlantic winds from

time to time but on the whole it

looks like we're going to have more

of a north or north-westerly wind.

And we all know what that means,

it's going to be cold looking further ahead.

There will be some sunshine as well but still some wintry showers

and depending on how strong the wind is and how much it

eases off overnight we could have a frost around that is widespread.
