Hello again. Cold weather is going to dominate over the week ahead. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
Now, earlier on in the week, we had flooding in Cumbria, | 0:00:05 | 0:00:07
for example, a lot of rain around, but this was Friday | 0:00:07 | 0:00:11
morning in Ambleside - not rain but snow and some ice around, too. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:16
And cold winds are strengthening during Saturday, | 0:00:16 | 0:00:20
blowing more of these wintry showers not just into Western Scotland | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
and Northern Ireland but perhaps into western parts of England | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
and Wales, a few showers getting into the Midlands, too. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:29
Snow more likely over the hills. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
But it will feel cold. The winds will be stronger on Saturday, | 0:00:31 | 0:00:35
and those temperatures, this is what it will feel like, | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
close to freezing there across the northern half of the UK, | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
where it remains windy, it remains showery. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:44
There's a continued risk of some icy patches around, too. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
The showers do tend to ease down overnight, the winds tend to get | 0:00:47 | 0:00:51
a little more westerly, temperatures perhaps not quite | 0:00:51 | 0:00:54
so low by Sunday morning, but there's still the risk of a frost, | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
particularly in the countryside. | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
And as we run through the day, you can see we've got a line of showers | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
on Sunday over the Irish Sea into Lancashire, | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
possibly Cumbria, all the way into the north Midlands, | 0:01:05 | 0:01:08
but fewer showers, on the whole, more places will be dry, | 0:01:08 | 0:01:12
sunshine across the eastern side of the UK. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
But out to the west, cloud will be increasing, and after that | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
chilly start, it means temperatures will be slow to rise during the day. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:21
And the cloud is coming in ahead of that weather system there. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
This is a bit of a change as we move into Monday. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
That weather system moving down across the UK will sweep rain | 0:01:27 | 0:01:31
south-eastwards across all areas overnight, a wet start, | 0:01:31 | 0:01:35
still, on Monday morning across southern England. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
It may take a while for the rain to clear the south-east. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
But it does clear away from other areas, | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
with a westerly wind following on from that and sunshine and showers. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:46
Now, we're going to find things changing | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
again as we move into Tuesday. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:50
That little weather feature there could bring some showers | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
overnight and keep a bit of rain going in the south-east | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
on Tuesday, but after that clears through, you can see where the | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
winds are coming from, all the way from the north once again. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
That means it's going to be turning colder, | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
those temperatures dropping away, and we'll start to see | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
the showers in the north turning wintry once again. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:10
So, as we run into Tuesday from Wednesday, we've got | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
high pressure out towards the west, | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
low pressure in the east across Europe. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
That means - you can see the isobars there running north to south - | 0:02:17 | 0:02:20
the winds coming down from the north. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
A slight change in the wind direction is going to change | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
the pattern of the showers. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:27
It looks like we're going to find more showers this | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
time down the eastern side of both England | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
and Scotland, coming in off the North Sea. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
This is where we'll have the strongest winds. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
There could be some winteriness, | 0:02:35 | 0:02:36
particularly in the North York Moors. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:38
And that's a similar pattern, really, for Thursday, I suspect, | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
although we may see some of these showers coming down | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
and clipping Pembrokeshire and possibly into Devon and Cornwall. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:48
But temperatures on the low side. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:50
So, what's happening? Well, as we look further ahead, | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
it looks like we're going to keep this cold air plunging down | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
across the UK with northerly winds. Mild air is not far away. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:59
It comes in the shape of an area of high pressure | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
and the Atlantic winds behind it. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
That high pressure is blocking off any movement, | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
though. Possibly later next weekend that high pressure may get | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
a little closer to the UK, but really, ahead of that, | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
and if that does happen, we're still going to find northerly winds, | 0:03:13 | 0:03:16
it's still going to be cold - not exceptionally cold, nothing unusual. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:20
There'll be wintry showers, more of them | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
down the eastern side of the UK, | 0:03:22 | 0:03:23
but once again not just cold by day - there's a risk of frost at night. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:27 |
