Hello there. For the past few days we've seen temperatures dropping

0:00:020:00:04

day on age and night on night,

0:00:040:00:06

but it's not going to be that way for too much longer.

0:00:060:00:09

What we're seeing at the moment, though,

0:00:090:00:11

high-pressure out to the west, low pressure to the east,

0:00:110:00:14

and the cold air coming down on a northerly wind

0:00:140:00:17

and that cold air is getting colder and colder

0:00:170:00:20

right now, so we've got

0:00:200:00:21

a widespread frost on Thursday,

0:00:210:00:23

but for most places, a dry and sunny day.

0:00:230:00:26

Showers Northern Ireland,

0:00:260:00:27

westernmost parts of Wales,

0:00:270:00:28

far south-west of England.

0:00:280:00:30

Most of the wintry showers

0:00:300:00:31

driven on by a strong and cold wind

0:00:310:00:33

across easternmost parts of England

0:00:330:00:35

and eastern Scotland.

0:00:350:00:37

Those temperatures in the afternoon

0:00:370:00:39

3 to 5 degrees typically,

0:00:390:00:41

so it will be a cold day.

0:00:410:00:43

So we're drawing down the colder air,

0:00:430:00:44

we've got the clearer skies

0:00:440:00:46

and we're going to have more frost round on Friday morning.

0:00:460:00:49

Again, temperatures in rural areas

0:00:490:00:51

could be down to about -6 or so.

0:00:510:00:53

More wintry showers

0:00:530:00:54

for eastern parts of England,

0:00:540:00:56

even a few in the south-east of England,

0:00:560:00:58

before they fade away.

0:00:580:00:59

Still got the sunshine

0:00:590:01:00

across much of England and Wales,

0:01:000:01:02

but coming into the north-west,

0:01:020:01:03

coming into Scotland and Northern Ireland,

0:01:030:01:06

the wind direction is changing.

0:01:060:01:07

More cloud is arriving

0:01:070:01:08

and perhaps a little bit of rain

0:01:080:01:10

and eventually that will start

0:01:100:01:11

to lift the temperatures

0:01:110:01:12

but Friday still

0:01:120:01:14

another cold day.

0:01:140:01:15

However, as we head into the weekend,

0:01:150:01:17

we've still got high pressure out to the west

0:01:170:01:19

but it's receding a little bit

0:01:190:01:22

and we're allowing air to come in

0:01:220:01:23

from the Atlantic around the top

0:01:230:01:25

of that high pressure

0:01:250:01:26

and push its way down into the UK,

0:01:260:01:28

so the really colder air

0:01:280:01:29

is limited more to the south-east on Saturday

0:01:290:01:32

and then it gets pushed

0:01:320:01:33

into the near continent,

0:01:330:01:34

as milder Atlantic winds slowly arrive

0:01:340:01:37

and it is quite slowly.

0:01:370:01:39

The temperatures will be slow to rise.

0:01:390:01:41

They'll be a lot more cloud around on Saturday,

0:01:410:01:43

pretty much across the board.

0:01:430:01:44

Those temperatures 6, 7,

0:01:440:01:46

perhaps even 8 degrees or so.

0:01:460:01:48

Most places will be dry but rather cloudy.

0:01:480:01:51

And on Sunday, we've still got

0:01:510:01:53

cloudy skies for many places.

0:01:530:01:55

A little bit of rain this time

0:01:550:01:56

pushing southwards into England

0:01:560:01:58

and Wales but boosting the temperatures.

0:01:580:02:00

It won't be as cold overnight

0:02:000:02:01

and by day, we could get temperatures

0:02:010:02:03

of 10 or 11 degrees.

0:02:030:02:05

There's the high pressure still

0:02:050:02:07

and we're still feeding around the top of that

0:02:070:02:09

this Atlantic air.

0:02:090:02:11

A couple of weather fronts on the scene

0:02:110:02:12

but weakening all the while,

0:02:120:02:14

most of the rain sitting really

0:02:140:02:15

probably to the north of Scotland, so,

0:02:150:02:17

again, more westerly breezes

0:02:170:02:18

across the northern half of the UK,

0:02:180:02:20

light winds further the south,

0:02:200:02:21

so it could get a little bit chilly overnight

0:02:210:02:23

depending on whether the cloud breaks or not.

0:02:230:02:25

But, on the whole, cloudy skies and pretty mild,

0:02:250:02:28

temperatures 9 or 10 degrees.

0:02:280:02:30

Now as we head into next week,

0:02:300:02:32

look at the jet stream here.

0:02:320:02:34

It starts to buckle more

0:02:340:02:35

and that's going to be important.

0:02:350:02:37

North of the jet stream

0:02:370:02:38

we've got the colder air,

0:02:380:02:39

south of it we've got the mild air.

0:02:390:02:41

You can see how the shape

0:02:410:02:42

is beginning to change.

0:02:420:02:44

Now early on in the week,

0:02:440:02:46

the high pressure still more

0:02:460:02:48

towards the south and south-west,

0:02:480:02:50

allows us to draw that Atlantic air

0:02:500:02:52

feeding in cloudy skies

0:02:520:02:54

and bringing with it

0:02:540:02:55

some reasonable temperatures

0:02:550:02:57

for the time of year.

0:02:570:02:58

However, as we move into

0:02:580:03:00

the latter part of next week,

0:03:000:03:01

it looks like the high

0:03:010:03:03

will tend to get pushed away

0:03:030:03:04

more to the west

0:03:040:03:05

as the jet stream buckles

0:03:050:03:07

and we get this northerly flow returning,

0:03:070:03:09

so it will turn colder.

0:03:090:03:10

For a while, though, next week

0:03:100:03:12

fairly cloudy, quite mild conditions across the UK,

0:03:120:03:15

not much rain and then as the jet stream changes,

0:03:150:03:18

we get the northerly winds,

0:03:180:03:19

it gets progressively colder later next week.

0:03:190:03:22

There'll be more frost around,

0:03:220:03:24

there'll be more sunshine around,

0:03:240:03:25

but there could also be some wintry showers. Goodbye.
