Hello there. December is just around the corner

0:00:020:00:04

and at the very start of the month we may see some milder air,

0:00:040:00:06

but I think it's not going to last - generally

0:00:060:00:09

a cold theme with some minor variations.

0:00:090:00:12

High pressure to the west of us, lower pressure to the east,

0:00:120:00:16

everything coming down from the north.

0:00:160:00:18

The isobars, the winds, coming in from the north

0:00:180:00:20

and that's dragging down colder air

0:00:200:00:21

and it's getting colder

0:00:210:00:22

over the next couple of days.

0:00:220:00:24

The wind direction has changed slightly,

0:00:240:00:26

so we're seeing more wintry showers

0:00:260:00:27

down the eastern side of England,

0:00:270:00:29

as well as a few wintry showers

0:00:290:00:30

for northern Scotland.

0:00:300:00:31

For many of these western areas

0:00:310:00:33

where we had the showers on Tuesday,

0:00:330:00:34

Wednesday should be drier

0:00:340:00:36

and a lot of the UK will be dry

0:00:360:00:38

and sunny, but cold again.

0:00:380:00:39

Temperatures three in the central belt,

0:00:390:00:41

seven, if you're lucky,

0:00:410:00:42

across southern parts of England and Wales.

0:00:420:00:44

Now, as we head into Thursday morning,

0:00:440:00:46

as the air's getting colder,

0:00:460:00:48

so the frost, I think, will be much more widespread, but again,

0:00:480:00:51

many places will be dry and sunny

0:00:510:00:53

after that frosty start.

0:00:530:00:55

More showers coming back

0:00:550:00:56

into Northern Ireland, to western Wales,

0:00:560:00:58

to the far southwest of England,

0:00:580:01:00

again some showers

0:01:000:01:01

near coastal areas of eastern England

0:01:010:01:03

and eastern Scotland.

0:01:030:01:04

Those showers could be wintry,

0:01:040:01:06

particularly over the hills,

0:01:060:01:07

but it will be cold

0:01:070:01:08

and probably Thursday

0:01:080:01:10

the coldest day of the next few,

0:01:100:01:12

with temperatures typically

0:01:120:01:13

three to five degrees maximum

0:01:130:01:15

in the afternoon.

0:01:150:01:17

As we head towards the end

0:01:170:01:19

of the week and we move into December,

0:01:190:01:22

this little high pressure here will tend

0:01:220:01:24

to drift slowly and change its position,

0:01:240:01:26

allowing these weather systems

0:01:260:01:27

to come around the top of it and

0:01:270:01:29

this is where we get the milder air,

0:01:290:01:31

but it gets in very, very slowly.

0:01:310:01:34

So a lot of cloud for Scotland

0:01:340:01:35

and Northern Ireland,

0:01:350:01:36

a little rain and drizzle,

0:01:360:01:37

brighter for England and Wales,

0:01:370:01:38

still a cold wind

0:01:380:01:39

and some showers in that south-eastern corner

0:01:390:01:42

where we're clinging on

0:01:420:01:43

to this colder air for another day,

0:01:430:01:45

but the milder air is coming in,

0:01:450:01:47

because we'll lose the northerlies,

0:01:470:01:49

get something more from the Atlantic,

0:01:490:01:51

more of a westerly breeze.

0:01:510:01:53

It does take a while, though,

0:01:530:01:55

for the temperatures to recover, to lift,

0:01:550:01:58

as that milder air comes in,

0:01:580:01:59

but this is what we're looking at on Saturday.

0:01:590:02:01

So seven, eight,

0:02:010:02:02

and maybe even nine degrees there.

0:02:020:02:04

A lot of cloud,

0:02:040:02:05

going to lose the sunshine,

0:02:050:02:06

but we'll lose those wintry showers.

0:02:060:02:08

Weak weather fronts rotating around the top

0:02:080:02:11

of that area of high pressure

0:02:110:02:13

and moving down across the UK.

0:02:130:02:14

Still behind that weather front there,

0:02:140:02:16

there's a lot of cloud coming in

0:02:160:02:17

across Scotland and Northern Ireland,

0:02:170:02:19

a bit of sunshine perhaps

0:02:190:02:20

but more cloud coming down

0:02:200:02:22

across England and Wales.

0:02:220:02:23

On that cold front, that weak weather front,

0:02:230:02:25

there'll be a little rain around,

0:02:250:02:26

but temperatures back up

0:02:260:02:27

to nine or ten degrees,

0:02:270:02:29

so that's a bit milder than it would normally be

0:02:290:02:32

at the time of year.

0:02:320:02:33

But as we head into next week,

0:02:330:02:35

the jet stream is going to change again,

0:02:350:02:37

we get these major undulations

0:02:370:02:39

in the jet stream, moving northwards,

0:02:390:02:42

southwards and we get on the wrong side,

0:02:420:02:44

if you like, of the jet stream,

0:02:440:02:45

so we get back into the colder air.

0:02:450:02:47

So that means as we move into next week,

0:02:470:02:49

we return to those colder

0:02:490:02:51

north and north-westerly winds bringing in some sunshine,

0:02:510:02:54

those showers turning more wintry as the air gets colder

0:02:540:02:57

and we get more frost around as well at night as skies tend to clear.

0:02:570:03:01

So that's the general theme as we head into next week

0:03:010:03:04

and that's because high pressure is out towards the west

0:03:040:03:08

and we're drawing down these winds again from the north,

0:03:080:03:11

colder winds back in across the UK.

0:03:110:03:13

However, there is a small chance

0:03:130:03:15

later next week that the position of

0:03:150:03:18

the high could change and we may get

0:03:180:03:20

some milder Atlantic air once again.

0:03:200:03:23

It's less likely to happen, that is,

0:03:230:03:25

and if it does, all too briefly, just like this weekend.
