Hello there. December is just around the corner | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
and at the very start of the month we may see some milder air, | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
but I think it's not going to last - generally | 0:00:06 | 0:00:09
a cold theme with some minor variations. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:12
High pressure to the west of us, lower pressure to the east, | 0:00:12 | 0:00:16
everything coming down from the north. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:18
The isobars, the winds, coming in from the north | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
and that's dragging down colder air | 0:00:20 | 0:00:21
and it's getting colder | 0:00:21 | 0:00:22
over the next couple of days. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:24
The wind direction has changed slightly, | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26
so we're seeing more wintry showers | 0:00:26 | 0:00:27
down the eastern side of England, | 0:00:27 | 0:00:29
as well as a few wintry showers | 0:00:29 | 0:00:30
for northern Scotland. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:31
For many of these western areas | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
where we had the showers on Tuesday, | 0:00:33 | 0:00:34
Wednesday should be drier | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
and a lot of the UK will be dry | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
and sunny, but cold again. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:39
Temperatures three in the central belt, | 0:00:39 | 0:00:41
seven, if you're lucky, | 0:00:41 | 0:00:42
across southern parts of England and Wales. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
Now, as we head into Thursday morning, | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
as the air's getting colder, | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
so the frost, I think, will be much more widespread, but again, | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
many places will be dry and sunny | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
after that frosty start. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
More showers coming back | 0:00:55 | 0:00:56
into Northern Ireland, to western Wales, | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
to the far southwest of England, | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
again some showers | 0:01:00 | 0:01:01
near coastal areas of eastern England | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
and eastern Scotland. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:04
Those showers could be wintry, | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
particularly over the hills, | 0:01:06 | 0:01:07
but it will be cold | 0:01:07 | 0:01:08
and probably Thursday | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
the coldest day of the next few, | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
with temperatures typically | 0:01:12 | 0:01:13
three to five degrees maximum | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
in the afternoon. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
As we head towards the end | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
of the week and we move into December, | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22
this little high pressure here will tend | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
to drift slowly and change its position, | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
allowing these weather systems | 0:01:26 | 0:01:27
to come around the top of it and | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
this is where we get the milder air, | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
but it gets in very, very slowly. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
So a lot of cloud for Scotland | 0:01:34 | 0:01:35
and Northern Ireland, | 0:01:35 | 0:01:36
a little rain and drizzle, | 0:01:36 | 0:01:37
brighter for England and Wales, | 0:01:37 | 0:01:38
still a cold wind | 0:01:38 | 0:01:39
and some showers in that south-eastern corner | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
where we're clinging on | 0:01:42 | 0:01:43
to this colder air for another day, | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
but the milder air is coming in, | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
because we'll lose the northerlies, | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
get something more from the Atlantic, | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
more of a westerly breeze. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
It does take a while, though, | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
for the temperatures to recover, to lift, | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
as that milder air comes in, | 0:01:58 | 0:01:59
but this is what we're looking at on Saturday. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
So seven, eight, | 0:02:01 | 0:02:02
and maybe even nine degrees there. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
A lot of cloud, | 0:02:04 | 0:02:05
going to lose the sunshine, | 0:02:05 | 0:02:06
but we'll lose those wintry showers. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:08
Weak weather fronts rotating around the top | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
of that area of high pressure | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
and moving down across the UK. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:14
Still behind that weather front there, | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
there's a lot of cloud coming in | 0:02:16 | 0:02:17
across Scotland and Northern Ireland, | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
a bit of sunshine perhaps | 0:02:19 | 0:02:20
but more cloud coming down | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
across England and Wales. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:23
On that cold front, that weak weather front, | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
there'll be a little rain around, | 0:02:25 | 0:02:26
but temperatures back up | 0:02:26 | 0:02:27
to nine or ten degrees, | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
so that's a bit milder than it would normally be | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
at the time of year. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:33
But as we head into next week, | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
the jet stream is going to change again, | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
we get these major undulations | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
in the jet stream, moving northwards, | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
southwards and we get on the wrong side, | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
if you like, of the jet stream, | 0:02:44 | 0:02:45
so we get back into the colder air. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
So that means as we move into next week, | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
we return to those colder | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
north and north-westerly winds bringing in some sunshine, | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
those showers turning more wintry as the air gets colder | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
and we get more frost around as well at night as skies tend to clear. | 0:02:57 | 0:03:01
So that's the general theme as we head into next week | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
and that's because high pressure is out towards the west | 0:03:04 | 0:03:08
and we're drawing down these winds again from the north, | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
colder winds back in across the UK. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:13
However, there is a small chance | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
later next week that the position of | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
the high could change and we may get | 0:03:18 | 0:03:20
some milder Atlantic air once again. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:23
It's less likely to happen, that is, | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
and if it does, all too briefly, just like this weekend. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28 |
