Hello, thanks for joining me. We'll speak with some confidence | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
about what we expect to see by way of weather | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
until the middle of the forthcoming week, | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
and then we'll pick out the trends for a slightly longer term. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:12
Let's really boost the confidence levels | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
and take a look at what happened in November with regard to sunshine. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:17
You'll see from the scale that many were well above | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
what we would expect at this time of year. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
Does that mean we've experienced a heatwave? Most certainly not. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:25
Many locations in England and Wales around about the average, | 0:00:25 | 0:00:28
Scotland and Northern Ireland below par | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
because these areas have been fully exposed | 0:00:30 | 0:00:32
to quite a lot of northerly wind | 0:00:32 | 0:00:35
which has brought that prospect, as many of you will have seen of late, | 0:00:35 | 0:00:39
of something really quite wintry. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:41
Now, through the course of the weekend we swap that cold air | 0:00:41 | 0:00:44
that many have seen through the week for something a good deal milder | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
coming in from the Atlantic thanks to an area of high pressure | 0:00:47 | 0:00:51
just to the west of Ireland. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:52
So no longer that bright, fresh start to the day. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
A little bit milder, perhaps, | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57
and certainly more cloud across western areas | 0:00:57 | 0:01:00
than we've seen of late. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:01
A frontal system across the northern parts of Scotland. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
The temperatures just showing signs of gaining a degree or two. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:08
This transition to something slightly milder from the Atlantic | 0:01:08 | 0:01:11
will take a good part of the weekend. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
That feature I was talking about in the north of Scotland for Saturday | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
becomes the feature across the south of Britain as we start Sunday. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
That gradually creeps away | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
and brighter skies percolate from the north | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
ever further south towards the Midlands and southern England. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
By this stage, look at that - 7 to 11 | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
rather than the 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
that many have seen for the past few days. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
All of that is coming to us thanks to this big area of high pressure | 0:01:34 | 0:01:38
as we start the new week, out towards the western side of Ireland, | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
the flow coming in from the north-west, | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
and having seen that sort of mildish, cloudy day on Sunday, | 0:01:44 | 0:01:48
we do it all over again on Monday. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
This stage, 8, 9, 10, 11 degrees or so. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
So the temperatures making double figures | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
across the southern half of the British Isles. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
Come Tuesday, that high pressure will have slid down towards France | 0:01:58 | 0:02:02
so we're getting more of a south and south-westerly breeze. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
That also helps to keep the temperatures up - | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
we will be frost-free as we start the new week. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
And then from Tuesday on into Wednesday, | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
that high pressure is still there across the southern half of Britain, | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
but because it's that bit further south it's opened the door for | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
developments to move in to the north and west of the British Isles | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
from the Atlantic. So wet and windy fare | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
for parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland by this stage, | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
but look at the temperatures. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
No longer the 3, 4, 5, look at this - | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
9, 10, 11 or 12. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
And then Wednesday could well be a wet and windy sort of day. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:36
Certainly later in the day, on into Thursday, | 0:02:36 | 0:02:38
this low pressure really churning its way in from the Atlantic. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:42
By the end of the week | 0:02:42 | 0:02:43
we think it'll have moved over towards Scandinavia. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
We don't want to leave a vacuum behind, | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
so we bring the high pressure in and that generates a northerly. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
Now that goes back to where we were in the middle of this week, | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
and you know what happened. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
There could be some snow showers in that forecast, | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
particularly across northern and eastern parts. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
Then, towards next weekend, that high pressure retreats, | 0:03:00 | 0:03:04
we bring a low pressure in close by to Scotland, and that generates | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
a coolish sort of north-westerly breeze. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
And there could well be quite a bit of that, | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
because we have that juxtaposition of the high and the low. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
So it could be for a time that we see something really quite cold, | 0:03:15 | 0:03:19
certainly windy at times, | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
and there could, whilst we have that northerly especially, | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
have that prospect again of seeing something really quite wintry. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
Enjoy your weekend. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:28 |
