Hello. If you've been tempted to | 0:00:02 | 0:00:03
shed the thickest of your winter garments this weekend, | 0:00:03 | 0:00:06
with slightly higher temperatures, don't put them too far away. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:09
You'll need those extra layers again by the end of this forecast period. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:13
Cold air, you'll notice, not too far away, | 0:00:13 | 0:00:16
but at the moment we are bringing in this milder air from the Atlantic. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:20
It's certainly no heatwave, | 0:00:20 | 0:00:21
but it has brought some slightly higher temperatures already. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:24
Little ridge of high pressure | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26
bringing in the westerly or north-westerly winds, | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
and underneath this high, we do have one wriggling weather front | 0:00:28 | 0:00:32
making for a cloudy and a damp start to Sunday | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
across southern parts of England and South Wales. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:37
Quite misty and murky as well. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:38
Things here will brighten up through the day. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
Another finger of cloud across parts of Northern Ireland | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
and south-west Scotland, into Wales and the south-west. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
A few spots of rain along this. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
Elsewhere, a fair amount of sunshine on Sunday. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:50
Quite chilly up to the north-east, but not as cold as it has been, | 0:00:50 | 0:00:53
and down to the south-west | 0:00:53 | 0:00:54
we're looking at double-digit temperatures. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
And for many, it's been a while since we've seen that. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
During Sunday night, our area of high pressure still trying to | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
build its way in from the west, | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
it's going to push this frontal system though, | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
so we start Monday morning on a largely dry note. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
There'll be some spells of sunshine through the day, | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
generally large amounts of cloud, and in western areas | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
that cloud will produce some outbreaks of patchy rain. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
Further east is where you have the best chance of seeing some sunshine, | 0:01:17 | 0:01:21
and those temperatures still not doing too badly, | 0:01:21 | 0:01:23
certainly relative to what we've had recently - | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
eight, nine, ten degrees. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
So here's our little ridge of high pressure, then, | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
as we move out of Monday into Tuesday. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:31
The high drifts eastwards. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
As these frontal systems start to squeeze in from the west, | 0:01:33 | 0:01:36
the isobars squeeze together, | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
so the winds are going to start to pick up during Tuesday, | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
particularly up towards the north-west. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
We'll see a lot of cloud, | 0:01:43 | 0:01:44
some outbreaks of patchy rain in northern and western areas. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
Best chance of any brightness again towards the east | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
and temperatures of seven to ten degrees. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
During Tuesday night into Wednesday, | 0:01:52 | 0:01:54
this weather front really gets stuck, we suspect, | 0:01:54 | 0:01:57
across Scotland, so we'll see rain | 0:01:57 | 0:01:59
continuing to feed into the north-west of Scotland | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
on the increasingly strong wind, | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
and then as we go on through the day on Wednesday | 0:02:03 | 0:02:05
rain will spread into other northern and western areas, | 0:02:05 | 0:02:08
and with the rain, strong winds - could see gales at times. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:12
But those winds coming from the south-west, | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
so still pumping up some mild air for the time being. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
Now, that is the precursor to this pretty deep area of low pressure | 0:02:17 | 0:02:21
swinging its way through during Wednesday night into Thursday. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
Strong winds, some heavy rain, | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
and then on the back edge of that system, | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
we start to get back into the cold air. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
Could even be some snow on the back edge of that rain band | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
over hills in the north. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:34
Certainly the showers in the north turning to snow, potentially even | 0:02:34 | 0:02:38
to fairly low levels as we get deeper into Thursday. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
And as we move through Friday into next weekend, | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
this is the set-up. Low pressure to the east, high pressure to the west. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
Follow the white lines, the isobars, all the way up to the north. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:51
We tap in, once again, to that cold Arctic air | 0:02:51 | 0:02:55
which is going to sweep its way southwards across the country. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
There'll be some showers, some of the showers will be wintry. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
Some spells of sunshine as well. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
Through the latter part of the weekend and into the following week, | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
there is just a chance we could bring frontal systems | 0:03:06 | 0:03:09
or areas of low pressure in from the north-west, | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
and if that happens, yes, we'll see some rain and some strong winds, | 0:03:11 | 0:03:15
but with things generally cold as we head through the weekend | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
and beyond, there's certainly the potential for some snow, | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
particularly in the north. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:23
So keep those winter warmers close at hand - | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
you may need them again | 0:03:25 | 0:03:27
as we head through the next ten days. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29 |
