Hello. The first chapter of our weather story this week is not | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
a particularly thrilling one, just a continuation of the quiet | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
and relatively mild weather that we've seen during Sunday. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:12
That's how it looked for one of our Weather Watchers in Cardiff | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
on Sunday - large areas of cloud, some spells of sunshine - | 0:00:14 | 0:00:17
and that's what we take with us into the start of the new week. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:20
But after that quiet start to the story, | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
things get a bit more exciting - wet | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
and windy weather for the middle of the week, and then it will | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
turn much colder and, yes, some of us will see some snow. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:31
But Monday is essentially plain sailing. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
Could be some fog patches in East Anglia | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
and the south-east through the morning. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
Then there'll be large areas of cloud | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
which could produce the odd spot of rain, | 0:00:39 | 0:00:41
but on balance it's a mostly dry day with some spells of sunshine, | 0:00:41 | 0:00:44
temperatures not bad at all for the time of year, seven degrees | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
in Newcastle, eleven for Plymouth and for the Channel Islands. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:50
Now, the quiet start to the week comes courtesy of this, an area | 0:00:50 | 0:00:54
of high pressure drifting slowly eastwards. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
But these frontal systems start to squash in from the west during | 0:00:56 | 0:01:00
Tuesday, and as those fronts squash in, it'll start to strengthen up the | 0:01:00 | 0:01:04
winds in northern and western areas. Some rain into the north-west, too. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:08
Dry down towards the south-east, and after any early fog has cleared, | 0:01:08 | 0:01:12
then we will see some spells of sunshine. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
But the main player in our weather story for the middle | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
of the week is this, a deep Atlantic low-pressure system. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:21
The first effect will be to bring strong winds in western areas, | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
increasingly strong through Wednesday. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
There'll be gales in places, heavy rain, | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28
too, into Northern Ireland, Western Scotland. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
Largely dry to the south-east, and with this south-westerly wind, | 0:01:30 | 0:01:34
very, very mild indeed, ten, eleven, twelve degrees, | 0:01:34 | 0:01:38
that mild air being drawn up ahead of our low-pressure system. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
Now, as the low moves through on Wednesday night, | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
it's going to bring some very heavy rain, some very strong winds. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
That could cause some disruption, so stay tuned to the forecast. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:51
And then, as the low drifts away, | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
we get plunged back into the deep freeze, | 0:01:54 | 0:01:57
these northerly winds coming all the way from the Arctic | 0:01:57 | 0:01:59
down across the British Isles. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
So on Thursday we have the rain to get rid of. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
In fact, it'll hang around for a good | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
part of the day in the south-east. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:07
Then it's a windy day, quite a bright day, with sunshine, | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
but showers, too. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:11
Initially over hills in the north we'll see some snow, but that snow | 0:02:11 | 0:02:15
is likely to develop to lower levels as we head through Thursday night. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:20
Now, this is a really wintry-looking weather chart, I have to say - | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
low pressure to the east, high pressure to the west, | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
these very strong northerly winds. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
In fact, we'll see gales across exposed spots in Scotland. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
And where those strong winds coincide with snow showers, | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
it could be blizzard conditions. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
Snow showers possible for the west coast and the east coast, many areas | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
seeing sunshine, but a cold feel, | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
which we take with us into the start of next weekend. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:46
These northerly winds still blowing down across the country. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:50
However, a subtle change looks likely to take | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
place during the weekend. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:54
This area of high pressure looks like it's going to try | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
and topple in from the west. It'll do a few things. | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
It'll cut off that northerly wind, | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
so it will be slightly - SLIGHTLY - less cold, we suspect, | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
with fewer showers but more issues with frost and fog. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:09
There is, though, the continued risk of rain and snow, | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
as through the latter part of the weekend | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
and into the following week we could well see frontal systems or | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
areas of low pressure diving in from the north-west, allowing us | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
to tap into some milder air, yet with cold air not far away | 0:03:20 | 0:03:24
there is the continued chance of some snow. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
So a quiet start to the week, but then the story gets more exciting. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:29 |
